‎Tamayo Rufino Arellanes 1899 1991‎

‎Arte Prehispanico de Mexico: Coleccion Rufino Tamayo‎

‎159 pages with over 150 photographs some in color and index. Folio 13 1/2" x 10 1/2" bound in cream cloth with black lettering to spine and front cover. Introduction by Ramon Xirau. First edition limited to 2000 copies. Rufino Tamayo was a Mexican painter who combined modern European painting styles with Mexican folk themes. Tamayo attended the School of Fine Arts in Mexico City from 1917 to 1921 but he was dissatisfied with the traditional art program and thereafter studied independently. He became head of the department of ethnographic drawing at the National Museum of Archaeology 1921–26 in Mexico City where he developed an interest in pre-Columbian art. Tamayo spent many years of his career in New York City first settling there from 1926 to 1928. He retained his ties to Mexico and returned there often but the modern art he encountered in New York—especially the paintings of European artists Pablo Picasso Georges Braque and Henri Matisse—profoundly influenced his work. Tamayo reacted against the epic proportions and political rhetoric of the paintings of the Mexican muralists who had dominated the country's art production since the Mexican Revolution. Instead he chose to address formal and aesthetic issues in easel paintings fusing European styles such as Cubism and Surrealism with subject matter that often involved Mexican culture. By the 1930s Tamayo had become a well-known figure in the Mexican art scene. He lived in New York again from 1936 to 1950. Tamayo exhibited his paintings at the Venice Biennale in 1950 and the success of his work there led to international recognition. After living in Paris from 1957 to 1964 Tamayo settled in Mexico. In 1974 he donated his large collection of pre-Columbian art to the city of Oaxaca founding the Rufino Tamayo Museum of Pre-Hispanic Art. In 1981 Tamayo and his wife donated to the people of Mexico their collection of international art which formed the basis for the Rufino Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City.Condition:Corners gently bumped. ‎xx260 pages with 45 illustrations 5 maps bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/2" bound in original publisher's red with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Foreword by Neill H Alford Jr. The Civilization of the American Indian series number 133. First edition. The book traces the emergence of the Cherokee system of laws from the ancient spirit decrees to the fusion of tribal law ways and Anglo-American law. The Cherokees enacted their first written law in 1808 in Georgia. In succeeding years the leaders and tribal councils of the southeastern and Oklahoma groups wrote a constitution established courts and enacted laws that were in accored with the old tribal values but reflected an accommodated to the whites' legal system. Thanks to the great gift of Sequoyah-his syllabary-the Cherokees were well versed in their laws able to read and interpret them from a very early time. The system served the people well. It endured until 1898 when the federal government abolished the Cherokee tribal government. Condition: Dust jacket price clipped. A very good to fine copy in a near fine jacket. . First Edition. ‎William Graham Sumner 1840 1910 edited by Albert Galloway Keller and Maurice R Davie‎

‎Essays of William Graham Sumner‎

‎2 volumes. xix499 pages with frontispiece; viii534 pages with frontispiece bibliography and index. Octavo 9" x 6 1/4" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Edited with prefaces by Allbert Galloway Keller and Maurice R Davie. First edition. William Graham Sumner was an American academic and professor at Yale College. For many years he had a reputation as one of the most influential teachers there. He was a polymath with numerous books and essays on American history economic history political theory sociology and anthropology. His popular essays gave him a wide audience for his laissez-faire: advocacy of free markets anti-imperialism and the gold standard. He was a president of American Sociological Association from 1908 to 1909. Born in Paterson New Jersey he graduated from Yale College in 1863 where he had been a member of Skull & Bones. Later he was appointed to the newly created Chair of Political and Social Science at Yale. As a sociologist his major accomplishments were developing the concepts of diffusion folkways and ethnocentrism. Sumner's work with folkways led him to conclude that attempts at government-mandated reform were useless. He was a staunch advocate of laissez-faire economics. Sumner was active in the intellectual promotion of free-trade classical liberalism and in his heyday and after there were Sumner Clubs here and there. He heavily criticized socialism/communism. One adversary he mentioned by name was Edward Bellamy whose national variant of socialism was set forth in Looking Backward 1888 and the sequel Equality. Like many classical liberals at the time including Edward Atkinson Moorfield Storey and Grover Cleveland Sumner opposed the Spanish American War and the subsequent U.S. effort to quell the insurgency in the Philippines. He was a vice president of the Anti-Imperialist League which had been formed after the war to oppose the annexation of territories. In his speech "The Conquest of the United States by Spain" he lambasted imperialism as a betrayal of the best traditions principles and interests of the American People and contrary to America's own founding as a state of equals where justice and law "were to reign in the midst of simplicity." According to Sumner imperialism would enthrone a new group of "plutocrats" or businesspeople who depended on government subsidies and contracts. In the 1870s Sumner was strongly influenced by the English evolutionary thinker Herbert Spencer; after 1885 or so Spencer's influence faded. Among Sumner's students were the anthropologist Albert Galloway Keller the economist Irving Fisher and the champion of an anthropological approach to economics Thorstein Bunde Veblen. ‎The Rubber Ball Games of the Americas‎

‎vii121 pages with frontispiece 7 maps and bibliography. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 1/4" bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Monographs of the American Ethnological Society volume XVII. First edition.

The Precolumbian ballgame was a sport with ritual associations played for over 3000 years by the peoples of America. The sport had different versions in different places during the millennia and a modern version of the game ulama is still played in a few places by the local indigenous population. Pre-Columbian ballcourts have been found throughout Mesoamerica as far south as Nicaragua and possibly as far north as the U.S. state of Arizona. These ballcourts vary considerably in size but all have long narrow alleys with side-walls against which the balls could bounce. The rules of the ballgame are not known but judging from its descendant ulama they were probably similar to racquetball or volleyball where the aim is to keep the ball in play. The iconic stone ballcourt goals are a late addition to the game. In the most widespread version of the game the players struck the ball with their hips although some versions allowed the use of forearms rackets bats or handstones. The ball was made of solid rubber and weighed up to 4 kg 9 lbs or more and sizes differed greatly over time or according to the version played. The game had important ritual aspects and major formal ballgames were held as ritual events often featuring human sacrifice. The sport was also played casually for recreation by children and perhaps even women.

Condition:

Points rubbed and bumped spine sunned and gilt dulled. ‎Taylor Douglas Macrae 1901 1980‎

‎Languages of the West Indies‎

‎xix278 pages with tables and diagrams. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" bound in original burnt orange cloth with black lettering to spine. Foreword by Sidney W Mintz and Dell Hymes. First edition.

Based upon more than forty years of linguistic and ethnographic research Douglas Taylor's work presents the languages of the Caribbean in all their variegated richness. Focusing as it does on language contact and linguistic change in the Caribbean from pre-Conquest times to the present it brings the perspectives of linguistics anthropology and history to bear on a crucial area of the New World experience. The author concentrates first on the Amerindian languages of the Caribbean Nepuyo Shebayo Yao Taino Arawak and Island-Carib. He provides the fullest account ever given of the linguistic situation and the history of these languages. Second he turns to the so-called creole languages of the region languages commonly associated with the enslaved Africans whose descendants make up the majority of the Caribbean population. He shows the derivations of the various language systems and the borrowings each language makes from another. Today as Taylor demonstrates these languages vie with standard dialects of European tongues in much of the Caribbean. In Haiti alone probably more than five million persons speak a creole as their first language. By choosing these two important and radically contrastive dimensions for description and analysis Taylor provides the reader with a broad yet remarkably particular overview of the phenomena of language and language change. Creole languages are spoken by millions of contemporary speakers; but the language of the Island-Carib has disappeared from the insular Caribbean. Thus the idiom that once provided all the inhabitants of the lesser islands with their principal medium of communication has now been almost completely supplanted. The principal languages of much of the region today are the outgrowth of lengthy and complex encounters among speakers of many different tongues speakers who were themselves descended from newcomers whose own native languages were not or are no longer spoken in the region. As Taylor points out in his introductory comments language as the primary means of perpetuating culture profoundly reflects and informs the culture itself. Its presence is a living representation of the way of life of people; its disappearance or destruction usually signals the replacement of our cultural system by another. In sum Taylor has provided original and crucial evidence that the origin and character of the Caribbean creole languages must be sought in cultural history of the Caribbean creole-speaking peoples. He adopts the view that the early stage of the language reflected a lexicon largely of Portuguese origin that had been shaped in West Africa and subsequently reshaped in other regions under the influence of other languages. To this "reflexication" hypothesis as it is called he joins a necessary grammatical hypothesis.

Condition:

A fine copy in like jacket. John Hopkins University Press hardcover‎

‎John Eric Sidney Thompson 1898 1975‎

‎Maya Hieroglyphic Writing: Introduction‎

‎xvii34764 with frontispiece figures map and index. Quarto 11 1/2" x 9" bound in original publisher's wrappers. Publication 589 Carnegie Institution of Washington. First edition.

In this series of essays Thompson reviews extant knowledge on Maya writing gives rich comment and reworks anew the entire field in search of material that may give clues to decipherment. His approach is revealed in the following quotation. "In this volume I have tackled the problem of decipherment in what I deem to be a new way although one which has in it elements which have been tried before. It is my conviction that we shall interpret the glyphs only by relying heavily on the beliefs the religious symbolism the mythology and to a lesser extent the everyday activities of the Maya because such concepts surely are imbedded in each glyph . . . Argument must be from the known to the unknown and for that reason many pages are given to elucidating the meanings of the day names and other signs the names and functions of which are known." All these phases are discussed linguistic clues are investigated and the pictorial and graphic qualities of the glyphs themselves are analyzed at length. Thus the author makes an intense dual study of both the ethnology of the ancient Maya and of the morphology of the hieroglyphs in a search for inter-linkages that may lead to further understanding. Thompson shows that the several calendars endlessly repeating and interlocking like the gears of a complicated clock were not just soulless counting devices: "The Maya conceived of the divisions of time as burdens which were carried through all eternity by relays of bearers . . . Time was not portrayed as the journey of one bearer and his load but of many bearers each with his own division of time on his back." This concept accounts for a host of ethnological ideas suggested in the codices and the stone inscriptions and mentioned in the books of Chilam Balam. Each period such as the day the 260 day cycle and the katun had its own group of bearers usually gods; and the occasion of transfer of the burden of that particular series was an event of note. Period endings were the resting places of the porters. The outstanding example of this Maya idea was the importance of the endings of the twenty-year katuns commemorated by important ceremonies and the erecting of monuments. At such times the bearer of the incoming katun became a powerful diety while his predecessor was relegated to comparative obscurity until the cycle repeated itself. Regarding the religious nature of the Maya calendar the author says "Nowhere else in the world have the periods of time from the day upward been not only deified but given active personalities and the most important parts on the divine stage. . . The fourth Maya day was the day of the maize god . . . The sun god is not only the sun he is the day Ahau he is the number 4." Thus even the numeral itself may be deified. Thompson believes that this thesis of spiritual inter-linkage of living calendars with the Maya pantheon indicates a basic philosophy of the priests. It serves not only in interpretation of the hieroglyphic texts but also gives an insight into the thought and action of the Maya.

Condition:

Corners gently bumped with some light edge wear spine age darkened else a very good copy. ‎The Jicarilla Apache Tribe: A History 1846-1970‎

‎viii265 pages with 4 maps 24 illustrations bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/2" bound in original publisher's tan cloth with brown lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. In this first full-length history of the Jicarillas from the American occupation of the Southwest to the 1970s Tiller emphasizes relations between the federal government and the tribe-the effects of enforced dependence and how the Jicarillas have survived-even flourished-in spite of it. Opening with an examination of the traditional culture and society of the two bands of Jicarillas-the mountain-dwelling Olleros and the plains-dwelling Llaneros-the author establishes the traits that more than any other have characterized them down to the present: adaptability determination to retain their homeland desire to be self-reliant. The theme of the Jicarillas' resilience runs throughout the story of their dispossession exile to an alien reservation and eventual return to their lands in northwestern New Mexico where poverty and neglect were to be their lot for many years. It was those lands rich in timber grazing resources and oil that served as the foundations for their remarkable recovery during the Indian New Deal of the 1930s and their ability to exercise today a large measure of autonomy.
