‎Rare édition originale de l’un des meilleurs traités de géométrie du XVIe siècle, dans lequel Bartoli aborde la mesure des distances et des superficies. Smith, Rara Arithmetica, 315 (qui ne décrit que la seconde édition de 1589) ; Berlin Kat. 1701; Kiely, Surveying Instruments, p. 190 ; Mortimer 45. « Prima edizione col ritratto dell’autore intagliato in legno, non meno che le figure inserite fra il testo » (Cicoganra, Catalogo ragionato dei libri d’arte e d’antichita, I, 421). Le présent traité explique comment mesurer de grandes distances, hauteurs ou superficies, par le biais de méthodes géométriques. L’auteur y aborde aussi le problème de la perspective et de la projection géométrique. Le quatrième livre est consacré à la construction et à l’emploi du compas et de la boussole, tandis que dans le livre V Bartoli traite de la géométrie euclidienne. Enfin, dans le livre VI, l’auteur étudie les racines carrées. Bartoli donne dans son Del modo di misurare un exposé détaillé des méthodes de topographie et des instruments utilisés au XVIe siècle. Bartoli avait traduit de nombreux ouvrages scientifiques, et il reprend dans son traité certains éléments mathématiques étudiés par les auteurs qu’il a traduits: Frisius, Apian, Durer, Alberti, Oronce Finé, Stoeffler, Peurbach... L’abondante illustration se compose d’un superbe frontispice gravé, d’un portrait de l’auteur, et de 160 gravures sur bois dont 4 à pleine page et 2 dépliantes. ‎In this study, the authors questions much of current British psychiatric practice. Part of the book is devoted to explaining how the psychiatric profession has been able to establish a hegemony over the mental health field, and consequently subordinate the other mental health professions to minor roles. The main emphasis of the book is on the controversial policy of desegregation of the mentally ill. The historical development of general psychiatric units is discussed, then a case study documenting the 'careers' of three patients who passed through one such unit is presented, providing a fascinating insight into the way in which the unit operated as a diagnositic and therapeutic centre. Finally, an analysis is made of some of the issues raised by the study. In particular, the staff structure of psychiatric centres and the processes of assessment and treatment are considered in detail. This book was written as a discussion document - it remains highly relevant 25 years later.
