In folio (cm.42x29), bel cartonato coevo (carta Varese), 2 Voll. pp. (14nn)-XVI-34-(10nn di indice). Front. in rosso e nero, ritratto dell'A. all'antip., vignetta incisa in rame al front. (acquaforte di Pietro Leone Ghezzi (1674-1755) che rappresenta Eustachio mentre disseziona un cadavere umano nel teatro anatomico), capilettera e testatine ornate in xilografia. Unito album composto da XXI tavv. sempre incise su rame contenenti num.se figg. Quarta ediz. dell'opera del grande anatomista del '500, Bartolomeo Eustachi (1510 ?- 1574) il quale nel 1563 pubblicava a Venezia, gli Opuscula anatomica, una raccolta di cinque trattati in cui esponeva i risultati che aveva raggiunto nelle sue ricerche anatomiche. Da tempo, tuttavia, era impegnato in un'opera ben più ambiziosa sull'anatomia umana corredata di grandi tavole anatomiche e un commento in cui fossero discusse le affermazioni del suo avversario, il Vesalio, che nel 1543 aveva pubblicato il De humani corporis fabrica. Nella prefazione agli Opuscula, annunciava la pubblicazione di quarantasei tavole, incise su rame; purtroppo, a causa del grosso impegno finanziario e all'eta ormai avanzata, che non pochi problemi di salute gli aveva procurato, l'Eustachi moriva senza riuscire a pubblicare il trattato. Da quel momento del lavoro se ne persero le tracce, nonostante le disperate ricerche. Nel 1712, finalmente, i rami delle tavole anatomiche furono ritrovate grazie al certosino lavoro di ricerca di Giovanni Maria Lancisi. Con l'aiuto del papa Clemente XI, che si preoccuò di acquistarle e metterle a disposizione del Lancisi, il 21 maggio 1714, in occasione dell'inaugurazione della biblioteca dell'ospedale del Santo Spirito, oggi nota come Biblioteca Lancisiana, a cui parteciparono il papa, i cardinali, prelati e nobili romani, fu presentata l'edizione in folio delle tavole anatomiche di Bartolomeo Eustachio, con il commento che Giovanni Maria Lancisi. Nel frontespizio è stampata un'; sopra, in caratteri cubitali, si legge il nome di Clemente XI, che aveva patrocinato sia il recupero dei rami sia la loro pubblicazione, il dedicatario dell'edizione. This is a very good hardcover copy in the original dark green cloth covers, title in gilt on the spine, and ruled covers. A touch of wear to the spine tips, but no marks to the covers. Very clean inside as well, but this copy formerly belonged to a major museum of natural history and has one handstamp inside the front cover. After it was de-accessioned it was in the collection of a well known American scientist and has his bookplate on the front endpaper and signed by him on that plate. Main text in Latin with English version on facing page. Some foxing to endpapers.9" high X 6" wide, 223 pages.
