Signed, handwritten presentation: «Avec les amitiés du reporter photographe Wallemme Raoul» «With love from the photojournalist Wallemme Raoul.» Very beautiful and unique collection, testifying to the genius of the making of the Deep Star 4000, a diving saucer invented by Commander Cousteau. The reproduction of the press clipping glued at the beginning of our collection explains: «The French Office for Underwater Research in Marseille will build, on behalf of an American firm, a diving saucer, the 'S.P. 4000,' which can descend to a depth of 4000 metres. This machine, whose full-scale model has just been produced, must be completed in May 1964. It will be able to carry out its first trials the following month, before leaving for the United States where it take the name 'Deep Star.'» In 1964, the French Office for Underwater Research, led by Commander Cousteau, entrusted the company Arbel de Douai with the work of forming the hemispheres in Vasco Jet 90 steel intended for the manufacture of the diving saucer «S.P. 4000.» The 33 photographs collected in this album of internal archives recount all the stages of this conception. We see the metalworkers at work, dressed in suits worthy of science-fiction; the last shot immortalised the team posing proudly in front of photojournalist Raoul Wallemme's camera. It is the American company Westinghouse Corp who, under Cousteau's leadership and the French Office for Underwater Research, will manufacture the submersible. For certification purposes, the Vasco sphere manufactured by the Douai workshops will not be used by the American firm, who will prefer another model used by the US Navy. It will finally be used on another machine, the S.P. 3000 or Cyana. «In September 1971, a trial dive, luckily without crew, went wrong. Cyana, hanging on a cable and weighted with a heavy weight, is submersed off Sicily to a depth of 3 200m. A shackle opens, releasing the cable. The saucer remains unable to move, a few metres from the bottom. The sinking point is immediately marked by an ultrasonic beacon that can only beep for one month. A race against the clock begins: it is necessary to rearm the Archimède and urgently equip it with shears inspired by a charcutier's ham slicer! Fourteen days after the sinking, while the beacon still emits weakly, the Archimède finds the Cyana and cuts the cable that holds it prisoner. It was the deepest ever successful rescue!» (Ifremer website). All the five issues of "Nature" in which, between February and October 1953, the crucial papers were published that revealed to the world the double-helix structure of DNA. The first, by America's leading chemist of his age, Linus Pauling, ultimately contributed least because Pauling's theory erroneously suggested a triple-helix structure. "Instead, victory fell to an unlikely quartet of scientists in England who didn't work as a team, often weren't on speaking terms, and were for the most part novices in the field" (Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything, p. 487f.). These were the American wunderkind James Watson and his older colleage Francis Crick at Cambridge; the brilliant but often overlooked Rosalind Franklin (with her student Raymond Gosling), working at King's College London; and the New Zealand-born Maurice Wilkins, also at King's but who communicated to the competition at Cambridge Franklin's key findings - particularly, an X-ray photograph showing the DNA molecule's basic shape and dimensions, which provided Watson and Crick with the crucial clue. It was by then known that "DNA had four chemical components - called adenine, guanine, cytosine and thiamine - and that these paired up in particular ways. By playing with pieces of cardboard cut into the shapes of molecules, Watson and Crick were able to work out how the pieces fit together. From this they made a Meccano-like model - perhaps the most famous in modern science - consisting of metal plates bolted together in a spiral, and invited Wilkins, Franklin and the rest of the world to have a look. Any informed person could see at once that they had solved the problem. It was without question a brilliant piece of detective work" (Bryson, p. 491f.). Less than two months later, their paper, "Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids: A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid", appeared in "Nature". Franklin's own paper, in the same issue, shows the now-famous X-ray diffraction image of DNA fiber and pointedly concedes that "our general ideas are not inconsistent with the model proposed by Watson and Crick in the preceding communication" (vol. 171, p. 741). - For the discovery of the DNA double helix, Crick, Watson, and Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology. Franklin had passed away four year earlier at the age of 37, a victim of the X-rays to which she had over-exposed herself in her work. - Tightly bound and in excellent condition throughout.

THOMAS LIPSCOMB one of Bedford County's oldest and best citizens was born in Louisa County Va. July 22 1808 to the marriage of William Lipscomb and Ann Day Cook natives of Spottsylvania and Louisa Counties Va. respectively. The father was killed by a falling tree in January 1829 having been a farmer. The mother attained the ripe age of ninety years and her old age was marked with great vitality. With her own hands she knit over 100 pairs of socks for the Confederate soldiers after she had passed eighty years of age. She lived nearly forty years a widow. The subject of this sketch was reared with his parents on a farm and received a common school education. At the age of twenty-one he went to Winchester Tenn. and began the study of medicine. Thence he attended the Medical University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia whither he proceeded and returned the most of the way on horseback. After one course of lectures he returned to Franklin County Tenn. where his parents had moved in 1826. In 1831 he came to Shelbyville where he has spent a lifetime in the practice of medicine surgery and obstetrics and has attained eminence in his profession. He has been president of the Medical Society of Tennessee of the Bedford County Medical Society and of the Female Institute at Shelbyville. Since entering into the practice of his profession the honorary title of M. D. has been conferred upon him by the University of Louisville and by the University of Tennessee. He has been successful financially. Since 1855 he has carried on farming. He is the president and largest stockholder of the Victor Mills of Shelbyville and was the president of the Branch Bank of Tennessee at Shelbyville at the opening of the war. The advancement of the schools and churches is due greatly to him. For two years he held the Shelbyville post office the emoluments of which he allowed to the widow of a former postmaster. He is not now actively engaged in the practice but at the age of seventy-three he successfully performed the difficult ovariotomy operation for the first time in his life. He was married May 22 1832 to Rebecca Stevenson who bore him ten children all of whom were raised. This wife died December 6 1880 and he then wedded October 26 1882 Miss Mary A. Cowan. Dr. Lipscomb and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church as was his first wife. Politically he is a Democrat and wields large influence as a worthy citizen of the county. m/a unknown
