br. Alla domanda «Chi sei?» probabilmente risponderete con «Io sono...». Fermatevi. La questione è tutta lì, in quel breve pronome e in ciò che si porta dietro: la certezza della vostra identità individuale, unica e distinta dal mondo che vi circonda. Ma è una certezza fondata? Tom Oliver, destreggiandosi con sicurezza e ironia tra biochimica, neuroscienze e storia culturale, smantella pezzo per pezzo la monumentale illusione dell'Io, dimostrandoci che è una costruzione artificiale e ingannevole, in cui siamo imprigionati fin dalla nascita e che non ha alcun riscontro nella realtà. Per esempio, i miliardi di cellule del nostro corpo muoiono e si rigenerano di continuo, cosicché ogni settimana siamo letteralmente una persona nuova; la nostra esistenza dipende dalla simbiosi con gli innumerevoli batteri e microrganismi che fanno parte di noi; geneticamente siamo quasi uguali a qualsiasi altro essere umano; la nostra personalità e il nostro carattere si sono sviluppati osservando, imitando ed entrando in relazione con altre persone; la nostra cultura è scambio e rielaborazione di informazioni tra i singoli individui e tra questi e il mondo. "L'inganno dell'Io" non è una decostruzione spietata della nostra esistenza; al contrario, è un invito a cambiare radicalmente la nostra prospettiva sulla vita, a ricostruire la società come una comunità di esseri umani interconnessi tra loro, a diventare un elemento integrato e non distruttivo del pianeta Terra e dei suoi ecosistemi. Ad abbandonare l'illusione che ci tiene prigionieri per diventare parte di qualcosa di più grande di noi.
