‎brossura Eratostene, nato a Cirene nel 276 a. C, con la semplice osservazione delle ombre, calcolò la circonferenza della Terra con estrema precisione. Il risultato non piacque a Cristoforo Colombo, poiché nel caso fosse stato confermato, lui non sarebbe mai stato in grado di raggiungere le Indie via mare, navigando verso ovest. Allora rielaborò il calcolo per suo conto e i risultati furono presto sotto gli occhi di tutti. Non raggiunse mai le Indie, ma fu "salvato" dalla presenza inaspettata del continente americano. Tutti gli errori commessi da Colombo prima e dopo la celebre traversata sono rivisti in chiave critica e "forse" imparziale.‎
