Neben den allgemeinen, zum Teil recht ausführlichen lexikalischen Artikeln ist auch ein vollständiges deutsches Wörterbuch enthalten, "weshalb des den Titel eines General-Lexikons mit vollem Rechte verdient". - Nahezu vollständiges Exemplar dieses äußerst seltenen frühen deutschen Lexikons in den originalen Lieferungsumschlägen! - Siehe auch unsere Bestell.Nr. 226-230. ‎The "West-Indische Paskaert" engraved by Pieter Goos, in its rare first state, a nautical chart prepared for the Dutch West India Company (WIC) as an aid to crossing the Atlantic Ocean to the trading regions of the Americas and visiting trading posts in Africa. It shows parts of the east coast of North America, both coasts of South America, Mediterranean Europe and the west coast of Africa. Many "West-Indische Paskaerten", as these navigational charts were called, were reprinted over and over from new states of the copperplates. For more than a century Dutch and foreign seafarers profited from their use on transatlantic journeys. The great cartographer Willem Jansz. Blaeu (1571-1638) published the first "West-Indische Paskaert" around 1630 using manuscript charts and other documents of the Atlantic and its coasts, including information provided by the Dutch WIC navigators who sailed these routes. Being one of the first practical uses of the Mercator projection, Blaeu's small-scale nautical chart was the first useful chart for crossing the Atlantic Ocean, making it easier to plot a straight line course for long distances on one map. Around 1660 Pieter Goos engraved four large navigation charts on new copperplates, including the plate for his present "West-Indische Paskaert". The present copy shows the plate in its first state, the only copperplate that Goos actually engraved himself. - Pieter Goos (ca. 1616-75) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver and printer and publisher of maps and atlases, whose father Abraham Goos (ca. 1590-1643) published many globes and maps together with Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius. He was especially known for his sea charts and his "Zee-atlas ofte water-wereld" (first edition 1666), one of the best maritime atlases of its time. Goos's "West-Indische Paskaert" in its present first state is of the utmost rarity: 8 other copies are known, of which only 4 on vellum. - The "West-Indische Paskaert" remained one of the Dutch West India Company's most important nautical charts for decades, with several important map printers and publishers producing editions from various plates that went through numerous states. The present nautical chart therefore not only bears beautiful witness to the golden age of Dutch maritime history, exploration and cartography; it is also a very rare vellum copy showing the first state of the copperplate engraved by Goos himself. The map has been professionally restored, with the tears along the edges repaired and the brittle parts reinforced with Japanese paper, and the map is mounted on museum-quality preservation corrugated board which in turn is mounted on museum-quality honeycomb board. ‎Intriguing material documenting the career of a Royal Navy officer serving aboard the oil tanker "Stanvac Manila", operated by the Socony Vacuum Oil Company, in the mid-20th century. Unusual in its extent, the collection reflects almost every step of his career, spanning more than 60 engagements on 20 different vessels from 1928 onwards. It includes Owen's continuous certificate of discharge up to 1957, giving the name of each ship he served on, the date and place of his engagement and discharge, his rating, a brief description of the voyage, and a report of his character, signed by a superior. Among the more remarkable entries are his engagement as third mate during "special operations for the liberation of Europe" in 1944, his service aboard the "Stanvac Manila", which he boarded for the fifth time in Bahrain in 1951, and his five years aboard the "Hua Heng", which he boarded and disembarked from several times in Singapore. - Further, the archive comprises identity cards featuring Owen's picture and fingerprints, as well as certificates of his advancement from lifeboatman (1937) to master of vessels of more than 1,600 gross register tonnage (1981). A certificate of proficiency in radiotelephony and a medical certificate deeming him "physically unfit for naval service" in 1940 are also included. - The collection is topped off by several photo albums mainly illustrating the voyage of the "Stanvac Manila", providing views of the places visited along the way, including Bombay, Sydney, Brisbane, Manila, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Madeira, New Zealand, Abadan, and the Panama Canal, depicting local ports and scenery, landmarks, coal workers, farmers, cattle and dolphins, as well as other vessels, including the SS Langleeridge in Portland, Maine, sailboats in Auckland, the "Stanvac Manila" crew, and impressive weather phenomena. - Signs of use; several photographs loose. A rare survival reflecting the eventful career of a British naval officer.‎

‎Beautifully produced suite of views engraved after the Dutch artist Jan Simon Voddiggel (1820-62) showing Wiesbaden in Hesse, one of the oldest spa towns in Europe, celebrated as the "Nice of the North". Includes several views of the old Kurhaus ("spa house") built by Christian Zais in 1810 in the neoclassical style, the nearby cold-water balneological institution of Nerothal, the summer palace of the Dukes of Nassau, the "Kochbrunnen" (hot spring fountain) in downtown Wiesbaden, the sepulchral chapel of Duchess Elizabeth of Nassau, the Ducal hunting palace, and the ruins of Sonnenberg castle. Issued with various titles, as well as without a title-page (as here). - One plate with an unobtrusive mark, another with faint stains at corners from adhesive on rear. Cloth rubbed, spine rebacked with new endpapers. - Provenance: Inscribed in ink on front free endpaper to Christine Emma Sanford, née Percival (1828-1900), "from her affectionate Mother" (dated 1 May 1859). Die Dokumentation über die Expeditionen Karls V. in Nordafrika gegen Tunis und die Barbareskenstaaten wurde vom kaiserlichen Gesandten Scepper (gest. 1554) zusammengestellt aus Augenzeugenberichten von Nicolas de Villegaignon und Juan Cristobal Calvete de Estrelle und durch Auszüge aus Giovio u. a. ergänzt. Die bemerkenswerten Belagerungstafeln zeigen eine Umgebungskarte von Tunis sowie Ansichten von Algier und El Kef (Aphrodisium). - Vorgebunden ist die erste Ausgabe von Brutos Erstveröffentlichung, ein geschliffenes Prosa-Enkomion auf Karl V., gewidmet dessen Sohn, König Philipp II. von Spanien. Giovanni Bruto (1515-94), ein ins Exil verbannter italienischer Gelehrter, verbrachte einen Großteil seines Lebens auf Reisen und war Geschichtsschreiber der Kaiser Rudolph II. und Maximilian II. - Sehr sauberes, praktisch fleckenfreies Exemplar. Titel der Vorbindung gestempelt; hinteres Vorsatzblatt durch 5 neue w. Bll. ersetzt. Mit schönem zeitgenöss. Kaufvermerk des österreichischen Staatsmanns und Militärs Graf Georg von Helfenstein-Gundelfingen (1518-73) am vorderen Spiegel, dat. London 1559 ("Emptus Lundini Angliae Metropol.") aus der Zeit seiner diplomatischen Mission nach Großbritannien: "Im J. 1558 war [Helfenstein] kaiserlicher Statthalter von Oberösterreich und im J. 1559 kaiserlicher Hofmeister. Zu dieser Zeit wurde er von Kaiser Ferdinand wegen der von diesem angestrebten ehelichen Verbindung seines dritten Sohnes, des Erzherzogs Karl, mit der Königin Elisabeth nach England geschickt" (ADB XI, 687). Griffiths bereiste den Orient im Jahre 1785 als Grieche verkleidet. Seine Reise führte ihn über Konstantinopel und Chios, Smyrna, Sardis, Konia und Taurus nach Syrien, Antiochia und Aleppo. ‎The first German edition of Vairasse's "Histoire des Sevarambes" ("History of the Sevarambians"), translated from the French 1677-79 edition. This is an account of an imaginary journey to Australia, a utopian history in the style of Thomas Moore. Presented in the manner of the then-current geographical and anthropological works, the book provides a direct criticism of revealed and imposed religions, in particular of 17th century Catholicism. Remarkably, this edition also includes the first German publication of Thomas Skinner's slavery narrative entitled "The adventures of an English merchant, taken prisoner by the Turks of Algiers, and carried into the inland countries of Africa" ("Die Selsamen Begebenheiten Herrn T. S. Eines Englischen Kauff-Herrens, Welcher von den Algierischen See-Räubern zum Sclaven gemacht, und in das inwendige Land von Africa geführet worden"). - Lower margin of title torn with some loss, final two leaves torn and frayed without loss of text. ‎Versch. Orte, 1829-1832. 25 Bleistift- und 1 Rötelzeichnung auf Papier, verschiedene Formate (2 Blätter oktav, sonst folio), auf gleichartiges Untersatzpapier kaschiert, dort tw. signiert und datiert. In zeitgenössischem Papierumschlag mit alter handschriftlicher Bezeichnung: ?Handzeichnungen von Wilhelm von Rally 38 [korrigiert auf 35] St. Ansichten aus Nieder-Oesterreich Inv. Nr. 10133?. Folio.‎

‎Die Zeichnungen entstanden auf Ausflügen und Reisen von Juli bis September 1829, im Sommer 1830, 1831 und im Frühjahr und Herbst 1832, die In die Wachau, ins Thayatal, ins Wiener Becken, ins niederösterreichische Alpenvorland und in die Bucklige Welt führten. Folgende niederösterreiche Ansichten sind vorhanden: Ruine Johannstein bei Sparbach, Ruine Starhemberg bei Wiener Neustadt, Othmarskirche in Mödling, drei Ansichten von Molz, Kollmitz, Weißenburg, Schauenstein, Lichtenwörth, Tulln, Greifenstein, Kirche von Muthmannsdorf, Scharfeneck bei Mannersdorf, Kaya, Hardegg, Aggstein, Pottschach, Klamm, Wald, Albrechtsberg, Gamming. Aus der Steiermark sind zwei Blätter aus Neuberg an der Mürz vorhanden. Trotz der nicht immer überzeugenden graphischen Qualität der Blätter stellen die Ansichten in ihrer Detailgenauigkeit wertvolles topographisches Quellenmaterial dar.‎
