The Whole Exhibiting a View of Literature and Literary Men in Great-Britain for Near Half a Century during which He Flourished. In Two Volumes. London: Printed by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly 1791. First edition first issue with "gve" for "give" in the uncorrected state line 10 on p. 135 in Volume I and all of the errata uncorrected. Two quarto volumes 10 3/4 x 8 7/16 inches; 274 x 216 mm. vii 1 blank ix-xii 16 "Table of Contents" and "Corrections and Additions" 516; 2 588 i.e. 586 pp. Engraved frontispiece by James Heath from a portrait of Johnson by Sir Joshua Reynolds in Volume I two engraved facsimile plates in Volume II. The Principal Corrections and Additions to the first edition of Mr. Boswell's Life of Dr. Johnson. London: Printed by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly 1793. Title verso blank 42 pp. Bound by Rivire & Son ca. 1910 in full mottled calf covers with triple gilt rules. Spines with five raised bands decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments red and brown morocco labels lettered in gilt gilt ruled board edges decorative gilt turn-ins marbled end-papers all edges gilt. Expertly rebacked and corners strengthened over fifty years ago with original spines laid down. Occasional light foxing or staining to a few leaves otherwise a fine copy of the first issue with the exceptionally rare Principal Corrections and Additions bound in at the end of volume two. "The work The Principal Corrections and Additions is now difficult to obtain; when it turns up it is almost invariably bound in with a copy of the first edition of the Life." Pottle p. 212. The 'gve' or 'give' question. "Of the four copies in the British Museum two have one reading and two the other. There can be little doubt that 'gve' is the earlier state. The first proof shows the word correctly spelled but the lines are punctuated as follows: 'Short O short! then be thy reign "And give us to the world again.' Boswell passed this in the proof but in the revise both proof and revise are in the possession of Mr. Adam he directed the printer to remove the exclamation point in the first line and substitute it for the first period at the end of the second which is in fact the punctuation of the printed text. When the changes were made the 'i' dropped out and the printer not noticing what had happened filled up the line by inserting a space between 'gve' and 'us'. After a considerable part of the edition had been printed the error was discovered and corrected in the press." Frederick Albert Pottle. The Literary Career of James Boswell p. 151. The correct first issue as here reads" "Short O short then be thy reign "And gve us to the world again!" Boswell's biography of Johnson is a classic of the genre-a full candid account of the life of one of the most famous eighteenth-century writers and thinkers by another. "The Life of Johnson was no single book miraculously produced by an inexperienced author. It was the crowning achievement of an artist who for more than twenty-five years had been deliberately disciplining himself for such a task" Pottle p. xxi. Courtney & Nichol Smith pp. 172-3. Grolier 100 English 65. Pottle 79 & 113. Rothschild 464 & 466. Sterling 71. Tinker 338.

London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, 1791-93 hardcover‎

‎SEWELL Anna; KEMP WELCH Lucy Illustrator; BATNTUN RIVIERE binder‎

‎Black Beauty‎

‎London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd. 1966. Anna Sewell's Black Beauty Finely Bound by Bayntun-Rivire Beautifully Illustrated by Lucy Kemp-Welch SEWELL Anna. Black Beauty. Illustrated with 8 colour plates and many line drawings by Lucy Kemp-Welch. London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd. 1966. Later edition. Octavo 8 1/16 x 5 1/4 inches; 204 x 134 mm. xii 226 pp. Eight full-page color plates and numerous black and white line drawings throughout the text. Bound ca. 1966 by Bayntun Rivire for Brentano's in full blue polished calf covers with double gilt borders spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled in compartments two red morocco gilt lettering labels gilt board edges gilt-turn-ins all edges gilt marbled end-papers. Small neat book-plate on front paste-down. A fine copy. A superlative copy of the classic - and quite novel - story of a horse told in his own words wherein he recounts his life as a well bred steed from early childhood in a pleasant meadow through numerous owners - some kind and some cruel - until fate returns him to the meadow in which he was born. Though animal autobiographies had been published before for children Black Beauty stands apart from those in that it offered social criticism of his various owners. Because of that the book was read appreciated and loved by adults as well as juveniles. It has never been out of print since its original publication has been adapted to the screen on fourteen different occasions and has forever fostered and cemented the special bond between young girls and horses. Ultimately Black Beauty's continual and lasting value is as one of the first - and certainly most influential - arguments for the humane treatment of animals. "Beauty's color is no accident Sewell's book is clearly modeled on Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin 1852 and the most poignant moments in the narrative occur when Beauty while recognizing the inevitability of servitude nevertheless longs wistfully for freedom" Robert Dingley in Nineteenth-Century British Women Writers p. 354. "Anna Sewell 1820-1878 author was born on 30 March 1820. her 'life of constant frustration' Mrs Bayly 71 began when aged about fourteen she slipped and fell. injuring both her ankles that led to a lameness which although varying in its severity was permanent and meant that at times she could not walk outside or stand for very long. She also suffered from a debilitating invalidism which varied in its intensity but remained with her for life characterized at times by pains in her chest loss of strength in her back and a 'weakness' in her head leading to periods of 'enforced idleness' Mrs Bayly 245.

London: J.M. ‎London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1935. In a Fine 'Textured' Inlaid Binding by Bayntun Rivire BAYNTUN RIVIRE binders. THOMSON Hugh illustrator. GASKELL Mrs. Elizabeth. Cranford. With a preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie and illustrations by Hugh Thomson. London: Macmillan and Co. 1935. Later Hugh Thomson illustrated edition. Octavo 7 1/16 x 4 3/4 inches; 180 x 120 mm. Frontispiece xxx 298 pp. With 110 black and white illustrations in the text. Bound by Bayntun Rivire Bath ca. 1935 in full dark blue crushed levant morocco covers decoratively bordered in gilt front cover with a beautifully' contoured' inlaid design in red tan green and brown morocco reproduced from the illustration on page 240 spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt gilt board edges and turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges gilt. A very fine example. The front cover illustration is taken from the text illustration on page 240 and depicts Mary Smith the narrator posting a letter to Miss Matty "I dropped it in the post on my way home and then for a minute I stood looking at the wooden pane with a gaping slit which divided me from the letter." Cranford which originally appeared as a serial in Charles Dickens' magazine Household Words 1851-53 and saw its first publication in book form in 1853 is "a series of linked sketches of life among the ladies of a quiet country village in the 1830s.The greatest charm of Cranford which has kept it unfailingly popular is its amused but loving portrait of the old-fashioned customs and 'elegant economy' of a delicately observed group of middle-aged figures in a landscape" Oxford Companion to English Literature. Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell 1810-1865 a "strong and independent-minded woman" The Feminist Companion to Literature was an important proto-Feminist writer who often tackled unorthodox subjects in her novels. Cranford for example concerns a community of spinsters who glory in their freedom from male interference. Mrs. Gaskell was "'the most popular with small question the most powerful and finished female novelist of an epoch singularly rich in female novelists'" Enclyclopedia of British Women Writers p. 264 citing Mrs. Gaskell's obituary in The Athenaeum. "Critical awareness of Gaskell as a social historian is now more balanced by awareness of her innovativeness and artistic development as a novelist. While scholars continue to debate the precise nature of her talent they also reaffirm the singular attractiveness of her best works" ibid of which Cranford is one.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1935 hardcover‎

‎London: Printed for Thomas McLean 1821. Scarce Copy With Earliest Watermarks Complete With Half-Title CARELESS John pseudonym. CHATTO William Andrew. The Old English 'Squire. "A Jovial Gay Fox-Hunter Bold Frank and Free." A Poem in Ten Cantos. Illustrated with Plates by One of the Family. London: Printed for Thomas McLean 1821. First edition earliest issue a Large Paper copy complete with half-title; scarce. Tall octavo 10 3/8 x 7 1/8 in; 263 x 181 mm . viii 136 pp. Twenty-four hand-colored aquatint plates including frontispiece watermarked "Whatman 1821"; the plates in Abbey's copy watermarked "Whatman 1823." Bound by Rivire & Son in full green crushed morocco with French fillets gilt tooled compartments broad gilt dentelles. Top edge gilt. Plum endleaves. Spine sunned to warm brown. Bookplate of Graham M. Adee. A fine copy. "The half-title is frequently missing" Tooley. The story of the life of a somewhat debauched squire from birth until his bridle at marriage. "'John Careless Esq.' is only known as the author of a rare colour-book The Old English Squire published by M'Lean in 1821 with twenty i.e. 24 coloured plates 'by one of the family' in the style of Rowlandson. The literary matter differs from that of Combe and Mitford in being strongly influenced by the style of Walter Scott wherever the galloping metre of Retaliation and Haunch of Venison is not used. Especially curious is the account of the collection of Old Masters from which the Old English Squire bought his St Anthony preaching to the Fishes." Prideaux. "It is not certainly known who 'John Careless' was. He is sometimes said to have been 'Stephen Oliver' a pseudonym of W.A. Chatto; but Chatto's poem of the same title was published in 1838 by 'Phiz.' His 'Old English Squire' with twenty-four aquatints colored by hand 'by one of the family' is in fact something of a mystery and for the collector rather an expensive one: it may cost 20 or even more. The reason of such a price though there is the justification of rarity lies in two features it possesses. One is the plates which are attributed to Thomas Rowlandson of which all that can be said is that they are utterly unworthy of the artist who in the same year completed the illustrations to 'Dr. Syntax's' three 'Tours.' However these puzzles of authorship and illustration make the book interesting. And trashy though the verse is it has yet one other great interest - that of life" Sawyer and Darton English Books 1475-1900. The stunning library of color-plate and sporting books collected by Capt. Graham M. Adee USN ret. of Newport. R.I. was sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries in 1953. Tooley 128. Abbey Life 387. Prideaux pp. 305 330. ‎London: Constable 1912. He Doesn't Mind This Outstanding Binding Wonderfully Finished by Christopher Lewis of By Bayntun-Rivire ROBINSON W. Heath. LEWIS Christopher finisher. BAYNTUN-RIVIRE binder. Bill the Minder. London: Constable 1912. Limited to 380 copies signed by the artist this being copy no. 228. Quarto 10 5/8 x 8 1/2 in; 270 x 215 mm. xiv 2 254 2 pp. Sixteen tipped-in color plates including frontispiece with captioned tissue guards and 117 black and white illustrations including full title-pages vignettes head- and tailpieces. An exceptional and unique 'inlaid binding' c. 1982 by Bayntun-Rivire designed and finished by Christopher Lewis in full red crushed morocco with multi-colored pictorial inlays and black-stamped flowers that reproduce the color plate "The King of Troy Compelled to Ask His Way" opposite p. 30 within a blind-tooled frame surrounded by gilt double-ruled borders. Raised bands with gilt tools and compartments with gilt ornaments within a gilt double-ruled frame highlight the spine. Gilt rolled edgework. Gilt decorated turn-ins. All edges gilt. Cockerell endleaves. A very fine copy. Housed in the original red cloth slipcase. "In Bill the Minder Heath Robinson really found himself. The story is a simple tale or a series of tales about the wanderings of the King of Troy and a boot-cleaner called Bill who became the Minder today he would be called a baby-sitter to the bad-tempered family of a bad-tempered mushroom-gatherer named Crispin. Like most of Heath Robinson's characters Bill was a solemn little person who took his minding very seriously even to the extent of studying at the British Museum and in the Minding Room of the Patents Museum at South Kensington. Soon his fame as a Minder spread and he found himself minding a large flock of children. One day they were out in the fields being minded by Bill they found an eccentric old man in a haystack. It was the King of Troy who had been banished from his country. With Bill's assistance the children set out on a journey and through a series of adventures they restore this unworldly old gentleman to his throne. In the process they meet some very droll characters. These are the substance of some of Heath Robinson's wittiest drawings" Lewis p. 102. Chris Lewis was one of Bayntun-Rivire's most talented 'finishers'. He designed and finished many unique inlaid bindings during his time at Bayntun-Rivire in the sixties and then again prior to his death in the late eighties.

London: Constable, 1912 hardcover‎

A. the most popular British artist of his day is one volume in a series entitled The Makers of British Art edited by James A. Manson. Already an accomplished artist of animals and nature" in 1824 Landseer visited Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford. The visit to Scotland had a great effect upon Landseer. That country with its deer and its mountains was thenceforth the land of his imagination. He began to study and paint animals more in their relation to man.he contrasted opposite classes of society as reflected in their dogs--the aristocratic deerhound and the butcher's mongrel.Having no check in his success artistic or social he made his way into the highest society and became an intimate and privileged friend of many a noble family.in 1839 he painted his first portrait of the queen which was given by her majesty to Prince Albert before their marriage. At the palace he was hereafter treated with exceptional favour. From 1839 to 1866 he frequently painted or drew the queen the prince consort and their children. He painted also her majesty's gamekeepers and her pets." In one of his most famous portraits 'The Connoisseurs' 1865 he renders himself sketching with a dog on each side of him critically watching his progress. The group portrait is reproduced in this volume as the frontispiece the original having been presented to the Prince of Wales afterwards King Edward VII. He produced many fine sporting and hunting scenes the subjects of numerous engravings further popularizing his work.
