Each volume is separately paginated and has a half-title leaf full page wood engraved frontispiece plate and separate title page. With several pages of publisher's advertisements at the back. Bound in contemporary straight-grain tan morocco with a decorative design stamped in blind on both covers and in gold on the spine. Contemporary small owner's name: "Capt. Charles Hardie" in light pencil on front free endpaper. The binding is rubbed and worn at the edges shallow tear at head of spine else very good with light scattered foxing. A scarce attractively bound edition of Maria Roche's best-selling Gothic novel. The firm of W.A. Leary & Co. is listed at 138 N. Second St. in Philadelphia directories from 1850-52 and one of the ads at the back is dated up through 1850 thus our attribution of the date circa 1850. W.A. Acceptable. 646 p. clean and unmarked except for name of former owner on front end paper; paper age-toned but strong; very fine engravings by F.O.C. Darley; frontis. has tissue guard; green boards with carved bird and floral ornamentation slightly rubbed and bumped; clear gilt writing; badly damaged spine. Rebinding with the same boards would make this a beautiful book. It is a 19th c. reprint of a late 18th c. best-seller mentioned in Jane Austen's Emma and the type of romance satirized in Northanger Abbey. It's actually an entertaining if preposterous yarn with an over-the-top villain who has cheated a brother and sister of their inheritance lovers who are repeatedly separated perpetual peril characters with names like "Lord Mortimer" and "Lady Euphrasia." This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Thus Edition by Routledge reasonably scarce and with no institutional holdings. 585 pages still bright and supple some foxing throughout. In an attractive Victorian decorative binding: red cloth with embossed designs in black and gilt. Contemporary ownership signature on FFEP and a Christmas gift sticker on the front paste-down. Originally published in 1796 it went into many editions by several publishers. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus by Porter & Coates which is commonally held by institutions but somewhat scarce inthe marketplace. Illustrated by F.O.C. Darley. 646 pages. Green cloth binding with gilt lettering and blindstamping. Slightly cocked; a bit of wear at the edges. Pages are toned but quite legible.
