Overall dimensions 13 x 11 inches mounted framed and glazed. Ink autographs a little faded else fine. Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane both played in The Faces which disbanded in 1975. Lane guested on Stewart's tour in 1978 to promote a recent album the U.S. triple-platinum-selling 'Blondes have More Fun'. This was Stewart's ninth studio LP topping the album charts in America Canada and Australia. The accompanying single 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy' peaked at number one on both sides of the Atlantic. Secretrary of the St. Paul Line additionallly initaled and signed by several witnesses and attorneys and with the blind-stamp seals of both companies. The Golden State was a named passenger train between Chicago and Los Angeles from 1902–1968. The Golden State had the same declining passenger revenues as other trains in the 1950s and 1960s although service was not downgraded severely as on other trains. A sleeping car and grill/lounge or dining car was always included. Offers 4 different dinner choices and also an A La Carte Menu. Cover panels lightly soiled and with light bumping to one corner. Near fine.</p> <p>A humorous and quirky trade catalog with chromolithographic covers for agricultural plows manufactured by the Rock Island Plow Co. of Rock Island Illinois:</p> <p>"This memorandum book is a handy thing and you will find a hundred uses for it during the next twelve months but there is practically no advertising value in the mere act of giving it to you. We might just as well give you a bundle of blank paper. All the advertising value there is about this memorandum book is the opportunity it gives to create an impression favorable to our goods. That’s the unvarnished truth given to you straight because we’ve searched the records in vain for a single instance where the truth ever hurt a legitimate business proposition…p2"</p> <p>Issued in the form of a memorandum book the trade catalog is essentially a blank book but with advertisements for the company’s plows at the foot of every other page. The plows have such names as the “Little High-Low Sulky†“Columbia Foot-Lift Gang†“Texas Special Gang†“Pickaninny Planter†“Pleasing as a Coon Chorus†and “Bully Boy Cultivator.â€</p> <p>"We manufacture a full line of agricultural machinery known to the world as the “Red White and Blue Line†but in a little book like this we can only hint at a very few of the good things we have. If you wake up some morning with a burning desire for some new implement. and this memorandum book causes the name of the Rock Island Plow Co. to pop into your head it’s a good advertisement otherwise we’ve lost out. Write to us for full information about any machine that interests you. First edition of this original rock poster created by Guy Juke for the famed Armadillo concert by Dire Straits just three weeks after their groundbreaking third studio album “Making Movies.†With frontman and guitarist Mark Knopfler the band achieved superstardom by the early 1980’s. The Armadillo club had opened in Austin TX just after the closing of the Vulcan Gas Company and the legendary rock music venue offered an electic range of performers including Bruce Springsteen Ravi Shankar AC/DC Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. If not for the Armadillo Austin may never have called itslef the “Life Music Capital of the World†and would close New Year’s Eve Dec. 31 1980 just 8 weeks after this concert. Armadillo World Headquarters was actually revived in Feb. 2024 as a pop-up venue for the SIMS Foundation. Juke b. 1951 is an Austin TX graphic artist and musician well known for his memorable posters created for the Armadillo World Headquarters and known as one of the “Armadillo Art Squad†creating sharp-edged figures on geometric settings. Paris: Imprimerie Croutzet et Depost 1924. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of Roche's surreal dadaist roman à clef exposing the misogynistic world of the French avant-garde. With annotations likely in Roche's hand. Like too many women artists of the early twentieth century French writer and artist Juliette Roche 1884 - 1980 has been long overshadowed by her male contemporaries. Roche came of age amidst leading artistic and literary salons of early 20th century Paris. She studied at Académie Ranson then considered the absolute best art school in Paris and was an early adopter of Cubism. However she is most closely associated with Dadaism. Despite Dada being a movement of absolute rebellion it harbored the normalized misogyny of the early twentieth century. Roche's most explicit critique of this discrepancy of rebellion vs repression can be found in La Minéralisation de Dudley Craving Mac Adam her groundbreaking novella.<br /> <br /> Part satire and part Dada nonsense the thinly veiled roman à clef is a prime example of the daring poetic style that Roche developed while living in New York during World War I. Having watched artistic vanguards come and go in Paris' salons and exhibitions Roche observed the New York City hijinks of Francis Picabia French 1879 - 1953 and Marcel Duchamp 1887 - 1968 with a level of detachment that alluded their American peers. She had close access to Picabia perhaps too close: in 1917 he and his wife Gabrielle Buffet-Picabia moved into an apartment directly beneath one Roche shared with her husband Albert Gleizes a French artist and philosopher who helped popularize Cubism on the Upper West Side. While Roche admired Picabia's iconoclasm she was disturbed by the misogyny she saw in works like his manometres where woman as 'la machine' was at best a manipulable object at worst the butt of a private joke. If taking Roche's ambivalence towards and her neighborly proximity to Picabia into consideration the novella could be inspired in part by an age-old story: pure contempt of one's neighbor.<br /> <br /> The novella is an indirect indictment of certain illicit behaviors Roche found annoying and dangerous. She synthesizes her fellow expatriates' personalities and physical traits to create the decadent Mac'Adam and the men he encounters on the day of his demise. Picabia becomes Mac'Adam. Swiss writer and boxer Arthur Craven 1887 - 1918 lends his name to the protagonist while becoming Lloyd Willow. Juliette Roche herself appears as Juliette Granite a play on words since roche means rock in French. Roche spins the narrative in poetic and surreal fragments at turns absurd and others told in a stream-of-consciousness style. La Minéralisation moves beyond conventional storytelling to allow readers into the minds of her characters through rich interior monologues revealing in each case her estimation of the particular model's idiosyncrasies. Roche seemed to find the antics of the all-male world of the Dadaists to be too limited and they're wickedly satirized among these pages.<br /> <br /> Written in ink on the first page is "Publié dans 'La Vie des Lettres' en 1921 / New York 1918" and there are a few words written on page 20 in the same hand. It appears to be Roche's handwriting from the few samples we've seen but we can't guarantee it.<br /> <br /> Paris: Imprimerie Croutzet et Depost 1924. Thin octavo 33pp terminal blank original printed wrappers stapled as issued; custom box. Uniformly bound by Glenn Malkin in modern speckled calf with geometric gilt design and blind-tooled roll & cogs decorations to covers spines with raised bands and gilt rules with contrasting leather title labels. Housed in leather-backed marbled board compartmentalised slipcase. A scarce imaginary voyage considered to be one of the earliest works of utopian science fiction. This work is also considered a cornerstone book in any collection of photographic literature and photography's first fictional work see Roosens & Salu <em>History of Photography</em> No. 10421. <br /><br />Originally published in France in 1760 as <em>Giphantie</em> an anagram of the author's name this work is credited with one of the earliest mentions of photography in Chapter 17: "That window that vast horizon those thick clouds that raging sea are all but a picture. Thou knowest that the ways of light reflected from different bodies make a picture and paint the bodies upon all polished surfaces on the retina of the eye for instance on water on glass. The elementary spirits have studied to fix these transient images; they have composed a most subtile matter very viscous and proper to harden and dry by the help of which a picture is made in the twinkle of an eye. the impression of the images is made the first instant they are received on the canvas which is immediately carried away into some dark place; an hour after the subtile matter dries and you have a picture so much the more valuable as it cannot be imitated by art nor damaged by time" pages 95-96.<br /><br />Glenn Malkin began binding professionally in 2008 and has since won numerous awards for his design bindings in national and international competitions. Octavo with four engraved plates by Cochin after Desfriches illustrating the second work "Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge"; contemporary mottled calfspine gilt with red label. <p><p>First edition: a marvellous imaginary work describing an utopian community and prefiguring the uses of photography television and the telephone.</p> <p>Tiphaigne de la Roche 1729-1774 was a physician polymath and much-published writer. In Giphantie an anagram of the author's name the protagonist is lifted semi-conscious and transported by air to a beautiful garden where a charming spirit guide shows him around a 'vaguely utopian society' Lewis. The book is a good example of the imaginary voyage genre using a quite plausible African setting but is more renowned for the fantastical series of technical advances that are discussed in striking detail including everything from prototype televisions to telephones. The discussion of the way in which the ruling spirits of the land have learnt to 'fix' the fleeting images formed by light is so detailed that the novel is considered a milestone in the pre-history of photography. A relevant passage in the subsequent English edition of 1761 is often quoted: 'You know that the rays of light reflected from different bodies form a picture and paint the image reflected on all polished surfaces for instance on the retina of the eye on water and on glass. The elementary spirits have sought to fix these fleeting images.'.</p> <p>This copy is bound together with Pierre Honoré Robbe de Beauveset's rococo poem in four verses Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge La Haye 1760 illustrated with four engraved plates. De Beauveset was an influential French writer known for his satires and erotic works.</p> </p> . n.p. unknown

Les romans utopistes et contre-utopistes écrits anonymement pour la plupart de Tiphaine de la Roche mélangent fréquemment des considérations de nature scientifique avec des considérations cabalistiques magiques ou encore hermétiques. Visionnaire il a anticipé de nombreuses inventions sociales ou scientifiques comme la photographie la nourriture synthétique ou la télévision amenant à le classer aussi comme un auteur de science-fiction. 2. Charles-Joseph Panckoucke fils du libraire André Joseph Panckoucke lui-même établi librairie et éditeur en 1757 s'était fait le défenseur le la cause de Buffon contre Haller. Il entretint une longue amitié avec le naturaliste jusqu'à la mort de celui-ci et fut l'éditeur de ses oeuvres. Il comptait également Rousseau et Clairault parmi ses relations.
