Old purple stamp of the Duke of Palmela with ducal coronet above monogram in blank upper outer corner of title page. 1 l. 93 pp. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. When D. Miguel seized the throne of Portugal in 1828 the then Marquês later Duque de Palmela sided with the opposition in Oporto and with them was forced to flee to England. D. Miguel had him and other leading opponents condemned to death in absentia and seized their estates but Dom Pedro I Emperor of Brazil appointed Palmela guardian to his daughter the rightful Queen Maria II and he acted as her ambassador at the British court. In 1830 he set up the young queen’s regency on Terceira in the Azores. The present work contains the judicial sentence passed by judges loyal to D. Miguel refuted with extensive annotations.António da Silva Lopes Rocha 1784-1842 obtained a law degree from Coimbra University held several judicial posts practiced law in Lisbon for a number of years eventually belonged to the royal "Conselho" and was auditor do Supremo Conselho de Justiça Militar. A partisan of the liberal cause he appears to have spent some time in exile during the reign of D. Miguel.Provenance: The extensive library of the Dukes of Palmela formed mainly in the nineteenth century was dispersed for the most part during the second quarter of the twentieth century through the 1960s. The first to hold the title was D. Pedro de Sousa Holstein 1781-1850 one of the most important Portuguese diplomats and statesmen of the first half of the nineteenth century who served as prime minister at various times in the 1830s and 1840s. Large 8° contemporary red half sheep over dark green pebbled cloth minor wear spine gilt in five compartments raised bands marbled endleaves original green on yellow printed wrappers bound in small repair at outer margin of front wrapper; tiny repair at outer margin of rear wrapper edges sprinkled. Title in red and black with publisher's monogram. Six lithograph plates. Double-page engraved map of Brazil. Overall in fine condition. xxviii 404 pp. 6 plates and 1 double-page map. Third edition but First Illustrated Edition of the first general history of Brazil which was originally published in Lisbon 1730 and again at Bahia 1878. This edition is described in error on the front wrapper and the title-page as the second. It was revised and annotated by J.G. Goes. The illustrations depict landfall in 1500 the city of Salvador Bahia the death of Padre Ignacio d'Azevedo João Fernandes Vieira panning for gold and Rio de Janeiro. There is also a double-page map of Brazil.Burns describes Rocha Pitta as "one of the foremost eighteenth-century historians" Perspectives on Brazilian History p. 16 although Rocha Pitta is often condemned for his florid and ornate language and for not using primary sources. Southey's harsh assessment has been widely quoted: "The only general history of Brazil is … a meagre and inaccurate work which has been accounted valuable merely because there was no other" Preface to the History of Brazil London 1810-19. On the other hand Southey testified to the importance of Rocha Pitta's Historia by numerous citations of it throughout his own work. And while Southey rejected Rocha Pitta's methodology the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico established 1839 respected and sometimes adhered to it. The Historia is an important source on the history of Minas Geraes where gold diamonds and emeralds were all discovered during his lifetime on the "Guerra dos Emboabas" 1708-1711 between Paulistas and recent immigrants from Portugal and coastal Brazil and on the "Guerra dos Macates" 1709-1711 between the sugar-planters in Olinda and the new bourgeoisie in Recife.Rocha Pitta 1660-1738 a native of Bahia traveled to Coimbra to take his degree then spent most of the rest of his life on his family's plantation in Brazil. Dom Diogo used the courtesy title Marquês de Marialva by permission of his elder brother Dom Lopo de Bragança Duque de Lafões the actual holder of the title. Unidentified twentieth-century pictorial bookplate on verso of title-page oil lamp olive branch and open book against a rising sun. 62 pp. FIRST EDITION of this spirited reply to José Agostino Macedo's Os Sebastianistas Lisbon 1810. Macedo's polemic against the Sebastianists provoked numerous attacks on its author to some of which Macedo replied in later pamphlets. Sebastianism born in the decades of Spanish rule over Portugal had a resurgence during the brutal French occupation of Portugal in 1807-1811. Macedo undertakes to prove four statements about the Sebastianists: that they are not good Christians good subjects or good citizens and that they are of all fools the greatest. Rocha Cabral's character was maligned in the Jornal do Comércio from whom his O Despertador was taking some government business; this Collecção includes reprints of articles printed in the Despertador defending himself against the Jornal's allegations reminiscences of the author's time in Rio Grande do Sul a transcription of a circular to the residents of Rio Grande do Sul published as a pamphlet in Villa do Rio Grande do Sul 1834 the conclusion of "Refutação da correspondência inserta no 'Recopilador Liberal' relativa à subscripção portugueza n'esta provincia e em outras do Império" also originally published in pamphlet form Rio Grande 1835 a document on the founding of the Gabinete de Leitura and letters testifying to Rocha Cabral's character.Rocha Cabral 1806-1850 fled his native Portugal in 1831 and became a naturalized Brazilian living in Rio Grande do Sul Rio de Janeiro and Minas Geraes. He was cofounder of the journal Despertador published from 1838 to 1841 "foi elle o que fez a nossa imprensa politica e os nossos jornaes subirem a uma escala superior. O Despertador foi um diario monumental na historia da nossa imprensa" as described in Innocêncio and was also founder of the Gabinete de Leitura Portuguez in Rio de Janeiro and the Sociedade Promotora da Indústria da Provincia de S.
