BRENNER (Jacques).
Une humeur de Chien ! Dossier sur la cause canine comprenant de nombreuses lettres de soutien d'écrivains et de lecteurs, des documents d'archives, circulaires ministérielles et coupures de presse, ainsi que des photographies originales de Jacques Brenner avec ses chiens successifs.
1972 Le monde littéraire a ses images d'Epinal et certains écrivains se représentent volontiers avec leurs animaux domestiques. Quand Céline, Colette ou Léautaud vivent entourés de chats, Jacques Brenner, lui, prend la pose avec ses chiens, et surtout il prend leur défense : après avoir été leur avocat en 1972 dans son "Plaidoyer pour les chiens" de la petite collection "Idée fixe", il se porte partie civile avec "Humeur de chien" pour protester contre leur bannissement des jardins publics en 1985. Le pamphlet s'achève sur un "appel à la résistance" sous forme de pétition détachable qui, relayé par une campagne de presse, va rencontrer un large écho dans l'opinion publique.Des dizaines d'articles et plus d'une centaine de courriers de lecteurs enthousiastes sont conservés ici pour servir de dossier d'instruction. Une vingtaine d'écrivains soutiennent aussi son initiative, parmi lesquels Marguerite Yourcenar qui renvoie avec des mots aimables "pour un ami des chiens" la lettre que Brenner lui avait adressée : "Madame et cher Maître, en souvenir du temps de l'hôtel Saint-James, quand il vous arrivait de promener votre cocker dans le jardin des Tuileries, je me permets de vous demander si vous accepteriez de signer la lettre ci-jointe que je vais envoyer à M. Jack Lang".Ou encore Milan Kundera : "je refuse de signer des pétitions, mais la vôtre, je la signe avec grand plaisir !", et aussi Marcel Arland, Hervé Bazin, Béatrix Beck, José Cabanis, Alexis Curvers, Michel Déon, Jean Dutourd, Dominique Fernandez, Matthieu Galey, Roger Grenier, Eugène Ionesco, Michel Mohrt, François Nourissier, Bernard Pivot, Angelo Rinaldi, Christine de Rivoyre ou encore Jules Roy qui signe une émouvante lettre : "Votre 'humeur de chien' va regagner le rayon de ma bibliothèque où se serrent les amis des animaux. J'ai trouvé votre livre plein d'humour et plein de force et je me sens fier, d'être, si peu que ce soit, mêlé à des projets de protestation. J'aurais eu plaisir à aboyer sous les fenêtres du ministre de la culture (...) Je vous accorde que dans la somme des vices, des petitesses ou de la cruauté, l'homme dépasse tout. C'est le champion toutes catégories".L'écrivain et peintre-graveur René-Jean Clot dessine un amusant portrait-charge de Brenner avec un corps de bouledogue invectivant le ministre : "Lang aux chats !" Jean Lecanuet et Jacques Chirac l'assurent de son soutien, tandis qu'un anonyme lui adresse une authentique balle de 22 Long Rifle avec cette mise en garde : "Si je vois ton chien chier hors caniveau, je lui colle une 22 dans le cul ! Nous sommes voisins et avec un fusil à lunette c'est très facile !" Le dossier se complète de procès-verbaux et contraventions pour "chiens non tenus en laisse et divagation abusive dans l'enceinte du domaine Louvre-Tuilerie", du manuscrit de la lettre ouverte à Jack Lang et d'une liste de personnalités à contacter (Brigitte Bardot en tête !) pour les rallier à la cause.
