Girls Education Memory Album with 24 handwritten entries from friends and classmates of a Young Woman in Hillsboro IL from 1853-1862. A memorabilia recording many aspects of the first major movement of women's education in the United States brings depth to a movement that was groundbreaking in its time but today is largely at risk of disappearing from the historical record. 24 entries in various hands dated 1853-1862. Memory albums held autographs sentiments and reminiscences of friends and schoolmates similar to yearbooks today. "To Hettie Oh! do not say Farewell We we are going to sever Tis like sudden passing bell of Friendship gone forever. Oh seek some other language than the mournful truth to tell Say parting friends may meet again but do not say farewell." Red cloth boards with a gilt motif of a girl scattering flowers in center. 7 3/4 x 6 in. Gilt edges. 130 pages. Album includes one frontispiece engraving and 5 color illustrations of flowering plants and birds. 2 hand-drawn pictures of flowers and a hand-drawn pencil illustration of a young woman cut out into a paperdoll. Most entries from Hillsboro IL but include other location such as St. Louis. Young women particularly those finishing their time at a female academy and preparing to leave their school friends tended to be the ones to create friendship albums. Entries from 1920-1921. Handwritten in ink on inside front cover "Nellie Johnson CCHS '24". Clinton Community High School in Clinton IL. First homework entry dated December 14 1920. Includes chapters on grammar literature devices and poetry. 2 large hand-drawn literary analysis diagrams. Chapter book reports with teacher's corrections and very interesting full-page hand-drawn "Diagram of Plots" on George Eliot's "Silas Marner". "At the New Year's party Priscilla said she was obliged to the same gowns and Nancy because she was five years older than her. And at the first sight of Godfrey Cass that Nancy saw and her arrival there then the Squire came in and gave a loud greeting to her father." Diagram highlights 3 major plot points: The Reward The Substitute and The Theft. Hand-drawn chart of rising action for Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. Includes original essays on "Character Sketch of Portia" and "The Treatment of the Jews". "Antonia was a rich merchant in Venice. He owned several large ships which would sail to other countries and procured cargo of spices and other merchandise. Shylock the Jew as a wealthy Jew but all he had was money and jewels. That was all he could own."<br/><br/>"Outlines of Parts of Speech" such as nouns verbs participles and pronouns. "Personal pronoun is a pronoun that shows by its form whether it denotes the person speaking the person spoken to or the person spoken of." Final section contains notes on "Narrative Poetry" and defines terms such as meter stanza and scansion. Includes original poem "Nature Pictures". "I. The sun came up upon the left out of the sea As the sun raised the next morning It looked like it came out of the sea because the ship was so far from land that there was nothing else in sight only the sea so it looked like it came out of the sea. // II. "In your chain of friendship Consider me a link." "When twilight pulls the curtain and joins it with a start Remember you have a friend though she wanders far." "According to Shakespeare May your life be 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' with everything 'As You Like It.'" Others look forward to the young ladies' futures beyond high school. "When you are old and sipping tea Remember your classmate of 1930." "Little sporty roadsters Little hugs and kisses Often make a little miss Change her name to Mrs." Also kind notes from the Sisters who led the school largely wishing their student's future happiness. "The happiest heart that ever beat was in some 'quiet' breast That sound the common daylight sweet and left to heaven the rest." "Although these words may simple be they bear you more than eye can see: 'God hold you ever in His care!'"<br/><br/>Many lovely pieces of ephemera documenting a teenage girl's social life included as well. Dried flower pressed on page 11. Very vibrant colorful table markers from dances with motifs such as ballet dancers harlequin clowns and bright birds and butterflies. Photographs and other items show the vibrant personality of the original owner. 13 photos of a girls posting in front of school and walking with nuns. Several items reference girls activity in sports such as news clippings on a women's speed skating competition and a program for a regional high school Gymnastics demonstration. Cutting that list Honor Roll and local events at the high school. Several programs and tickets for shows at local theaters in Detroit. Unique pair of "Shadowgraph Glasses" create a 3-D optical illusion with a blue lens for Left Eye and a red lens for Right Eye. Includes 1929 cutting from a Japanese-language newspaper. Original black boards and red cloth spine. 84 pages. 9 3/4 x 8 inches. Illustration all 8 x 5 1/2 in. "Freshman English and Sophomore English Note-book. Mildred Benjamin" written on first page in blue pen. Handwritten biographical reports of all those with aforementioned portraits. Also includes incomplete entries for Tennyson and George Eliot. "John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Haverhill Mass.the house still stands in which Whittier was reared.Whittier was taken with illness while visiting at the home of his friend.he had a slight paralytic stroke which produced a difficulty in taking food o medicine and it was plain that he could not be removed to Annesbury where he had always hoped to die. He was conscious to the last and was grateful to everyone. He had little acute pain. He lay all night in peace and died in the morning."Charles Dickens: "The boy Charles was not strong but nevertheless before he was ten years old he was obliged to earn his own living. He was placed in a blacking warehouse an old ramshackle house near the Thames. The scenes in which he was brought up were the most degrading ones possible.During this time he spent much of his time in the reading room of the British Museum.In 1842 he made his first trip to America. Just before going he wrote Oliver Twist in which he exposed the abuses of the poor law system." Press clippings on final pages for articles on Charles Dickens and John Greenleaf Whittier. Girls Education Japan Photograph album from a girl student in Japan c. 1926. Filled with 78 original silver gelatin print photographs of classmates school activities and social outings. Original cloth and red boards. 10 x 7.5 in. "Photo Album" printed on front cover. Pasted label on the final page with some information on the original owner dated 1926. Photographs of various small sizes from 1.75 x 2.5 inches to 3 x 5". Many images are school portraits of teenage girls in their matching uniforms posing either individually in pairs or small groups. Occasional photographs of teenage boys as well including one with the sitter dressed in a samurai outfit. Photos of a field day with outdoor footraces marches and performances. A few later photographs of older young women in civilian clothes posing by a river and strolling in a park together. These may be images of some of the younger students years later as adults. Most of the images show figures in Western styles clothes although 2 photographs show women dressed up in kimonos. Images lack captions but there is an autograph on one photograph. Some soiling to cover and 8 sheets of album are detached from spine. Unique images are in very good condition. unknown books
