The recipient is probably the father of the famous political diarist, Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville (1794-1865). Also with the small printed bookplate of DeWitt Miller, Cross River, Westchester County, NY. DeWitt Miller (born in 1857) was a very famous book collector and public lecturer. This edition is almost identical to Baretti's 'Easy Phraseology for the use of Young Ladies'. The main difference is that it was issued without the Preface written by Baretti's intimate friend, Samuel Johnson. Baretti (1719-1789) was a remarkable character, whose tale cannot be told in this space - except to say that he was a warmly embraced member of Johnson's circle. It looks like it is the result of having been handled with grubby hands. All four volumes have fading to spine and light bumping to corners and spine ends. Each volume has a trail of ownership writen on the fep. For example volume one has 'H.O. from J.H.O. 14 feb 1932' then below that 'C.H.H.Owen 1936' then 'George Walker from C.H.H.Owen 1970'. I bought the books from the widow of George Walker. J.H.O of course meaning J.H.Owen the editor. Each book has similar details of ownership on the fep. Please contact for images.
