‎The Workers School‎

‎Fall Term Announcement of Courses September 24 to December 15 1934‎

‎New York: The Workers School 1934. <br /><br />Octavo-sized pamphlet measuring 8 7/8 x 6 inches 225 x 152 mm 16 pages in stapled printed wrappers. Laid in is a slightly smaller handbill printed recto only. <br /><br />A pamphlet listing courses available during the Fall 1934 term at the Workers School in New York which was operated by the Communist Party USA. The school offered a staggering number of evening courses in various aspects of Marxism-Leninism economics and history all from the Party's standpoint. The school located at 35 East 12th Street in Manhattan was one of many Workers Schools that the Party operated around the country. That building now consists of co-op apartments that sell for millions of dollars unaffordable by any proletarians. <br /><br />There were also courses in English and Russian along with "special courses" such as "Problems of the Negro Liberation Movement" taught by James W. Ford the CPUSA's candidate for Vice President in the three elections from 1932-1940. Another special course was "Revolutionary Interpretation of Modern Literature" taught by staff members of New Masses magazine including Mike Gold and Joseph Freeman. <br /><br />Tuition for each course was $3. The school emphasized that it wasn't an academic institution and that it "participates in all the current struggles of the working class" including strikes and demonstrations. Nonetheless it was clearly no-nonsense. In a section on attendance the pamphlet states: "Classes begin promptly at the hour set. Regular and punctual attendance is required. Failure to attend two weeks in succession without explanation will necessitate elimination of the student from the rolls." <br /><br />Included with this pamphlet is a handbill for the Workers School highlighting "Courses for Workers." One of the lecturers listed is "Browder" referring to Earl Browder the general secretary of the CPUSA. <br /><br />This pamphlet and handbill are rare. OCLC shows no institutional holdings although it's possible they're included in uncatalogued ephemera collections.<b> RARE</b>. <br /><br />A fascinating insight into Communist education during the Depression years of the 1930s. <br /><br />CONDITION: The pamphlet has some soiling and edge wear to the wrappers as well as rusted staples. Original photo of the football team laid in the 1932 volume.  Light cover handling wear; light foxing to outer pages.  No autographs. ‎Thomas Arnold influential headmaster of Rugby School. Commencementt of an Autograph Letter written while touring the South of France describing scenes. Presented to an autograph collector by Arnold's widow Mary.‎

‎'Lyons July 18th. no year'. On both sides of a 17.5 x 20.5 cm piece of wove paper cut from the first leaf of a letter with 14 lines of text on the recto and 20 lines of text on the verso. In fair condition lightly aged with two small labels used as mounts still adhering. Annotated at the head of the first page in a small light hand dating the letter by reference to Arnold's 'Memoirs' and explaining that the letter is written 'To Mrs. Arnold who gave me this from Her dear hand Autumn 1860'. For the context of the letter see the Memoirs 'Appendix C. VIII. Tour in the South of France'. The letter begins: 'My dearest Mary We arrived here at three o' Clock this Afternoon and are off in the Steam Boat for Roignon tomorrow Morning at 5. - Our Window looks across the Saone to the Cathedral of N. D. de Fourvieres on the Top of the Hill. - It is a magnificent Town but the Heat here as every where is overpowering.' He predicts that the following day 'will be a cool and I expect a very interesting Day'. He will be interested to know 'what weather you have had in Westmoreland for fine Weather there is truly enjoyable and you need not fear the Sun'. Referring to the 'Lyon Tablet' he writes: 'We have just been out a little after Dinner & have seen the famous Plate containing the Speech of Claudius about giving the Freedom of Rome to the Gauls. - It is preserved here in the Museum. We have now come to the End of my Knowledge and I suppose that I shall enlarge my Knowledge a little but Naples I think is out of the Question and probably so also will Voltura sic for 'Volterra' be.' The recto ends here with the words 'But our .'. The verso begins: '… rather too hot – We have today clearly seen the whole Group of the Avergne Mountains in the Distance and their Outline is exceedingly no word follows. I succeeded in getting a Sketch of them as we drove along – besides seeing the Clermont Chain we have had a most hilly days Journey for we have crossed the Chain of Hills whose exact Height I do not know but where we went was more than 1500 so that the highest Peaks must be at least 3000. The Country would have been beautiful if it had not been so burnt up that it was all one Brown Colour together'. He describes how on 'the first Evening after leaving Paris we slept at Ponthiery – where the Salon was hung with Pictures of the Westmoreland Lakes – the next day we passed through the Forest of Fontainebleau which was most beautiful but as I have described it full length in my Journal and have not now much Time I shall pass it over'. The extract on the verso concludes with a description of a night at 'Briare on the Loire' and his making of a sketch and the words: 'Today we have had an easy Day - .' 'Lyons, July 18th. ‎7 June 1875. On letterhead of the Athenaeum Club London. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Folded twice. Clearly and firmly written. The letter would appear to concern an individual who is threatening to resign his membership of the Athenaeum Club and ends with reference to proxy voting for new members. Hughes begins by reporting that he has 'already written to the good but peppery & impulsive Dr. of whom I am as fond as you are'. He cannot 'make out quite what his intentions are but fear it is not at all off the cards that we may lose him this time though I believe it is by no means the first time that he has made a similar effort'. Hughes will 'certainly lubricate him & his gallery on Friday' and will do anything else Bricknell suggests as he would 'very heartily regret losing him'.
