Charles John Vaughan (1816-1897), Headmaster of Harrow School and Dean of Llandaff [Wilfred Seymour De Winton of Haverfordwest;
Charles John Vaughan Headmaster of Harrow School and Dean of Llandaff. Autograph Letter Signed to W. S. De Winton giving an analysis of the state of affairs regarding ‘Church Reform’.
23 October 1885; Llandaff. Despite Vaughan’s final protestations a fine analysis of the competing forces around the drive for reform of the Church of England. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The present item is from the papers of the recipient Wilfred Seymour De Winton c.1856-1929 of Haverfordwest. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium with mourning border. Signed ‘C. J. Vaughan’. Thirty-six lines of text. Begins ‘Dear Mr. de Winton / I am interested by your letter. You put forcibly the iniquity of the scheme & I feel that applying it thus to one locality gives a much better idea of it to ignorant people than a more general description of its bearing upon the country at large.’ In Vaughan’s opinion it is too late ‘to introduce such a Church Reform as will pacify enemies and must in order to do so alienate outrage friends’. The four points raised by De Winton ‘would be wormwood to the kind of Church people who live in these parts - and the last of them is Disestablishment at once’. He continues forcibly: ‘Those who are bent upon destruction will not give ear to reformation and those who are keen for conservation will not surrender the very thing they are fighting for.’ His view as De Winton will perceive is that there is ‘not much hope. If the present onslaught can be staved off and I trust it yet will be then the Church must indeed set itself to such self-mending as she can get her champions to consent to’. He ends by apologising for ‘a really inadequate answer’. 23 October 1885; Llandaff. unknown

Charles Sedgwick Minot (1852-1914), American anatomist at the Harvard Medical School and founding member of the American Societ
Charles Sedgwick Minot American anatomist. Autograph Letter Signed to Alexander Ramsay editor of the 'Scientific Roll' giving details of plans for an 'International Congress' regarding psychical research.
25 Mount Vernon Street Boston Massachusetts. 29 September 1884. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. The letter would appear to relate to the formation of the American Society for Psychical Research. Six days before the writing of the present letter on 23 September 1884 Minot had been a member of a committee of nine scientists who met at Boston to consider the advisability of the formation of a society for psychical research in America William James being another member. Minot begins the letter by informing Ramsay that 'in regard to the International Congress' 'The matter has progressed thus far favourably and the extent of the interest in the project surpasses our expectations'. He continues with reference to 'The American Committee' which has been given 'full powers to act' by 'the Amer. Asstn. We have already received a gift of £1000 with promise of more as a fund the income to be expended by the Congress for the prosecution of research.' He continues: 'No definite public announcements can be made until the Council B.A.A.S. i.e. the British Association for the Advancement of Science has taken action in regard to the enterprise. As soon as it is in my power I shall take the liberty of communicating with you again concerning our plans.' Ramsay 'will readily understand that so vast an undertaking necessarily matures slowly; at present we are still in the stage of tentative suggestion and no services can be more valuable than those which contribute to spreading interest in the movement.' He hopes that Ramsay 'will assist in this way. There can be no question as to the readiness of the Americans to join in the proposed Congress – The next step must be to ensure the participation of the British scientists.' 25 Mount Vernon Street, Boston, Massachusetts. 29 September 1884. unknown

Charlestown Free School
APPLICATION FOR THE SCHOOL HOUSE FOR A SINGING SCHOOL
Charlestown MA 1827. Single sheet folded to 30.5 x 19 cm. 4 pp. including a one page manuscript petition signed by 14 citizens two blank pages and addressed on last. An appeal to the school trustees to make available a suitable building for the instruction of 50 or 60 students composed "of youth of both sexes from the different religious societies in Town" to learn sacred music under the guidance of Col. D. R. Newhall of Boston "a gentleman of acknowledged ability." The petition acknowledges that "sacred music being considered a very important part of public worship when well conducted it would seem that every facility should be granted to those who undertake to obtain a knowledge of the science." Donald Nitz' article "The Norfolk Musical Society 1814-1820: An Episode in the History of Choral Music in New England" Journal of Research in Music Education Vol. 16 No. 4 Winter 1968 pp.319-28 discusses the transformation in American musical culture in the first few decades of the 19th century: "A group of reformers composed of clergymen immigrant European musicians and educated laymen made great efforts to bring about this change" to homophonic orthodox English idiom and away from the more "crudely-wrought but highly original and expressive fuguing tunes of William Billings Daniel Read Jacob French and many others." This transformation of the "sacred musical culture" was brought about through the propagation of musical societies and singing schools in small towns throughout New England

unknown books
