Informed attack on the design of HMS Gorgon 1837. Long Manuscript Letter lacking signature addressed to Benjamin Sharpe of the Royal Navy containing detailed criticism and informed criticism following an inspection of the ship.
Devonport. 13 April 1839. HMS Gorgon was designed by Sir William Symonds and launched in 1837. Her direct-acting engines in which the engine's cylinders are placed under the crankshaft built by Seaward and Company were the first to be fitted in any vessel. She was scrapped in 1864. 4pp. 4to. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and worn but with the signature torn away. Addressed with seal in black wax to 'Benjamin Sharpe Esq 19 Fleet Street London' Sharpe's father had been resident partner at that address in the banking firm of Gosling & Sharpe. The first paragraph reads: 'Dear Sharpe I have just returned from the Gorgon and my visit to her has verified the substance of our Conversation on Thursday last. Her present armament consists of 4 32-pounder bored guns & 2 84-pounders 10-inch on the weather deck. if properly armed she would also carry 12 32-pounders on the main-deck but she is deficient in these. Her draft of water is about 15th. & 15 . 6 which I believe is what she ought to draw if her armament were complete with the full compliment of men water provisions munitions &c.' The letter continues with detailed criticism with reference to a trail 'in the river in July last with Ld Minto & other lords of the Admiralty on bd' the fact that 'her displacement had been sadly miscalculated'an incident on the coast of Spain her engines and paddle-boards. 'To judge of Gorgon whether she be a failure or otherwise she should be tried as an armed vessel carrying 16 32-pounders & 2 swivel guns . We have no more money that we know what to do with - no more workmen than we <> to keep pace with our wants in the shipwright department - & yet we are sacrificing both to the vain endeavours of adventurers in naval architecture while there are plenty of persons in the service who might be advantageously employed in preventing the occurrence of these & other discreditable blunders if it were not the fashion to prefer speculative notions to the plain & unerring principles of the <> of naval Construction'. Budgen one showing him with a woman presumably his mother. TWELVE: Colour photograph of two young men in theatrical costume of Elizabethan ladies. THIRTEEN to EIGHTEEN. Six black and white press photographs two from The Times two from the Kentish Gazette two from Entwistle Canterbury. Four photographs depict the Queen Mother including one of her inspecting cadets and two with school dignitaries. 16 17 and 31 December 1935; all three items on letterhead of Walker's studio in King Henry's Road London. All three items 8vo. The first of two pages and the other two of one page each. Texts clear and complete. Fair on aged creased and slightly-discoloured paper. Discussing his disagreement with the architect of a building over the width of two proposed uprights. Walker considers that these 'would handicap the fullest expression'. The first letter carries a simple pencil diagram of the window. He feels 'we shall all have forgotten this point' when the window is seen 'in all its glory'. In the second letter he boasts of having filled 'architectural shapes all my life with glass' this having got him 'rather deeper than just the different orders & styles of Architecture'. 16, 17 and 31 December 1935; all three items on letterhead of Walker's studio in King Henry's Road, London. unknown

One Signed Letter in the hand of a secretary four Typed Letter Signed and two Typed Notes Signed all seven 'Fred Burridge' to G. K. Menzies Secretary Royal Society of Arts.
1917 1 1918 4 and 1919 2. All on letterhead of London County Council Central School of Arts and Crafts Southampton Row W.C. London. All seven items 4to 1 p. Each docketed and bearing the stamp of the Royal Society of Arts. All good on lightly-aged paper. The first is in a secretarial hand with the other six all typed. Item One: 4 December 1917. He doesn't 'quite understand' from Menzies' letter what it is that he wants him to do. 'From what Mr. Cole said I thought the proposal was that I should join a committee the Society of Arts was forming in which case I should have to obtain the formal consent of the London County Council.' Wonders whether on the other hand Menzies might 'wish to call upon me occasionally when something might arise on which my opinion would be useful' Item Two: 16 January 1918. A note in which Burridge agrees to serve on the Applied Art Prizes Committee. Item Three: 22 March 1918. Providing a list of the fifteen 'best Local Educational Authorities to write to' beginning with 'Edinburgh General Handicrafts Glasgow Carpets & General Manufacture' and ending with 'Stourbridge glass'. Each entry has been assigned in a pencil annotation to either the 'School Board' 'Technical Instruction C'tee' or 'Education C'tee'. Further annotated on the reverse presumably by Menzies with fifteen names and addresses beginning with 'J. Stewart School B'd Offices Castle Terrace Edinburgh' and ending with 'W. M. Robins Technical School Stourbridge'. Item Four: 25 June 1918. Headed 'Silver Cup'. Regarding the design of the cup Burridge notes that 'Wilson as a member of the Committee is to be considered as out of the running.' Burridge does not agree with Menzies' view that 'in present circumstances Ramsden and Carr are the best people to go to because although Mr. Ramsden would no doubt give you an excellent design the work in the main would be carried out probably by a young student of mine who has only been with him some eighteen months and is therefore not in my opinion sufficiently a master of his craft to be entrusted with such a work'. Burridge's suggestion is 'that the commission be given to Mr. Charles Welch of 24 Asmun's Hill Hampstead Way Hendon N.W.4. and in my opinion perhaps the most skilful silversmith in the country.' Welch is also 'a good designer and therefore could be trusted to produce you an article of sterling merit'. Postscript: 'Since writing this I have seen Troup and he concurs'. Item Five: He is writing 'to confirm my request in our conversation over the telephone this morning that you will please destroy my letter of the 25th instant i.e. Item Five which I wish to withdraw as I have now no recommendation to make and will have nothing to do with the selection of a silversmith to do the work proposed'. Item Six: 7 March 1919. A note of two sentences: 'Thanks for yours of the 4th instant. I quite agree.' Item Seven: 22 October 1919. Note of one sentence: 'As promised in my telephone conversation this morning I return the Redsull paper herewith.' 1917 (1), 1918 (4) and 1919 (2).
