‎Piccinni Antonio (Trani 1846 – Roma 1920)‎

‎Un Amphitéâtre à Rome‎

‎Acquaforte, firmata e datata in lastra in alto a sinistra all’interno del soggetto. Oltre l’immagine in alto a destra numero 470, in basso “A. Piccinni pinx. et sc,” titolo e “V.ve A. Cadart Edit. Imp. 56 B.ard Haussmann. Paris”. Etching, signed and dated in plate at upper left in the image. Beyond image in upper right corner number 470, below lettered "A. Piccinni pinx. et sc,"  the title and "V.ve A. Cadart Edit. Imp. 56 B.ard Haussmann. Paris." This plate was published in L'Illustration Nouvelle, an album edited by Maison Cadart in March 1879. Excellent impression with slight toning effect, printed on laid paper. Very good condition. Wide margins beyond the platemark. The subject can be traced back to a group of works belonging to the first etchings of invention made by the artist, all have for subjects characters and situations captured during his stay in Rome. In this print we see twelve spectators at the theater who lean out from the balcony to better observe the representation. Thanks to powerful chiaroscuro effects they emerge from the dark background and their meticulously studied faces are illuminated by the theatrical lights of the limelight.  The lights also whitewash the two pillars with capitals that break the linear and perspective trend facing left of the surface of the balcony. Just the effect of light and the point of observation from below up turns the faces into a series of masks suggesting a psychological analysis of the "theater types".  Piccinni was one of the European artists who were responsible for the rebirth of the original etching. Experimenter of the new possibilities related to the photographic medium, he is among the first in Italy to use the photoengraving between 1874 and 1886. The themes addressed by Piccinni show the constant attention to the simplest gestures of everyday life, individuals are represented as models of social categories. A. Petrucci, “A. ‎L'avaro‎

‎Acquaforte, 1878, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra. "A.

Etching and drypoint printed on contemporary paper, in excellent condition. Original etching executed on copper matrix; on the plate, under the image, indication of the artist as inventor and executor, name of the printer and title. The work, valuable and involving for the intense chiaroscuro effect, is taken from one of the main Italian art magazines of the time. The image, reproducing a painting by Bianchi himself, now preserved at the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan, represents a scene inspired by the ideals of the Risorgimento: in the half-light of a church, three young women pray before the altar for their brothers who are at the battlefield.  This is a fortunate and celebrated painting, also because of the fortunate choice of the subject, inspired by the third war of independence fought for the liberation of Venice (1866), with clear Risorgimento and patriotic subtexts evoked by the allusion to the tricolor flag in the garments of the three young girls. It was one of the works by Mosè Bianchi that his critics liked the most. The work is influenced by his youthful stay in Venice, evident in the bright and vivid colors. The fame of the "Fratelli al campo" contributed to the multiplication of versions, in the form of replicas, pseudo-sketches, variants, in different techniques, from oil to watercolor, to etching. Influenced by the style of Faruffini and Mariano Fortuny, Moses Bianchi began with historical paintings of romantic subjects, then turned to the genre and landscape. His painting seemed very innovative, for the attention given to the atmospheric effects and for the easy technique, actually closer to that of Fortuny than to that of the impressionists. He made about seventy engraved works in which he reported what he represented in the paintings but the attention is no longer directed so much to the subject as to the chiaroscuro games. ‎MICHETTI Francesco Paolo (Tocco da Casauria 1851 – Francavilla al Mare 1929)‎

‎L'enfant au panier‎

‎Acquaforte, 1880 circa, firmata in lastra in basso. Etching, circa 1880, signed in plate at bottom. Exemplar in the fifth state of six, with Cadart's address. Beautiful proof, impressed on coeval laid paper, with margins, in good condition. A little girl in traditional clothes walks frontally towards the viewer. The figure is in full light, stands out against a background of dense brushwood, powerful is the use of chiaroscuro that knows the lesson of Rembrandt. The child has her arms resting on her stomach to hold a basket, the wavy hair frames her face, it seems that she is humming and the detail of the earrings and the pearl necklace accentuate the brightness of her complexion. The subject is already addressed in painting, particularly in the painting La Petite Fille au panier on the Paris market in 1875 as belonging to the H collection. In the sale catalog, the painting is illustrated with Michetti's engraving, which therefore constitutes a terminus ante quem for the dating of the plate. The figure is constructed with Michetti's typical fine and free mark, a scratched, elegant mark; the volumes are constructed with a dense and irregular interweaving of delicate strokes and dots, successive morsure progressively marking the areas in shadow.  Signature in the lower right corner of the plate P Michetti. In the lower margin beyond the image on the left "Paolo Michetti del. et sc.", title in the center, on the right "Imp.Cadart, Paris" and on the left "Gazzette de Beaux-Arts".  The copy is taken from La Gazette des Beaux-arts issue of March 1880. Francesco Paolo Michetti (1851 – 1929) learned painting's rudiments from a local fresco painter. In 1868 he traveled to Naples, supported by a small grant to study at the academy there. Asserting that his temperament would benefit more from real life situations, he was allowed to return to the Abruzzo region in 1869 and continued to receive his grant. Michetti exhibited at the Paris Salons of 1872 and 1875, but he also belonged to Scuola di Resina, a group of Neapolitan painters that aimed to bring Italian art into Europe's mainstream. Abruzzo was his emotional and aesthetic inspiration. He captured its people, animals, and local events in emotionally charged paintings with luminous colors and vibrant light. In 1883 Michetti purchased a convent as his home and studio. For the next twenty years, the convent was a meeting place for Abruzzo's artists and exponents of culture, including writer Gabriele D'Annunzio. Michetti's 1895 Daughter of Iorioinspired D'Annunzio's 1904 tragedy, for which Michetti designed the sets and costumes. From 1872 onward, Michetti also produced small, decorative clay sculptures. After a lukewarm response to his paintings at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, he abandoned painting, sold his studio, and generally lived as a recluse. ‎PAGLIANO Eleuterio (Casale Monferrato 1826 – Milano 1903)‎

‎Fruttivendola normanna‎

‎Acquaforte, 1875 circa, firmata sotto l'immagine 'Eleuterio Pagliano dip. e inc. Etching, circa 1875, signed beneath the image 'Eleuterio Pagliano dip. and inc. / C. Lovera imp.', followed by the title. Printed on coeval paper, with margins, in excellent condition. A young woman seated on the sidewalk, wearing a bonnet and facing the viewer; her left arm rests on a basket of fruit. After a painting by the same artist. The dating suggested is between the date of exposure of the painting (1871) and the year of publication of the etching on "Arte in Italia". ‎AVONDO Vittorio (Torino, 1836 - Torino, 1910)‎

‎Campagna Romana‎

‎Acquaforte, circa 1870, dimensioni 160 x 255 mm, impressa su carta coeva, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Firma a matita in basso a desta. Etching, circa 1870, size 160 x 255 mm, impressed on coeval paper, in excellent condition. Signature in pencil in the lower right corner. Printed by chalcography Lovera in Turin. Light, and brilliant landscape with the poetical expression of trees, that recalls the traditional Italian painting of the XIX century. The work is characterized by a well-balanced lightening which created a strong feeling of the scene, with the movement of trees in the wind through intense black made shadows and light in far behind of landscapae. Vittorio Avondo, an artist from Turin who studied in Pisa and Geneva, and then came to the soft and nuanced naturalism of Fontanesi. He also lived in Rome from 1857 to 1865; perhaps a memory of that stay remains in this etching of the Roman Campagna (of which there are also some paintings in a private collection), a splendid piece imbued with an elegiac, melancholic atmosphere, pervaded by a vibrant light and delicate nuances. The etchings of the artist that are preserved are not many, perhaps a dozen. We learn from Giubbini that the work was published in "L'Arte in Italia" (August 1870, table 22) with a comment by Camerana on p. 128. Regarding the style, Giubbini commented very favorably on this etching, relating it to "the group of Appian's most 'finished' etchings"; as far as technique is concerned, he observed: "It should be noted that the process of simplification, probably already strong in the passage from the preparatory drawing to the drawing traced with the tip on the varnish, continues in the successive phases of the working of the plate through the lack or partial biting of many of the marks corresponding to the branches of the trees". A great collector and connoisseur of medieval and modern art, as well as a landscape painter, Avondo (1836 – 1910) played a fundamental role in the cultural history of Piedmont, contributing, together with Alfredo d'Andrade, to the study and protection of the artistic heritage of the territory. He devoted himself to painting from an early age, training in Italy, Switzerland and France. After his return to Piedmont, he became a consultant to the City of Turin and since 1863 is part of the commission responsible for selecting the works for the collections of the Civic Museum. His activities are varied: painter, antiquarian, city councilor and member of numerous cultural institutions. In 1872 he bought the castle of Issogne (Aosta) which he restored and redecorated with the help of Alfredo d'Andrade and Giuseppe Giacosa: starting from this experience he collaborated, from 1882, to the construction of the medieval village of Turin and with Emanuele Tapparelli d'Azeglio to the restoration of Casa Cavassa in Saluzzo. In 1890, he succeeded Tapparelli d'Azeglio as director of the Civic Museum: upon his death in 1910, his personal collection was transferred to the Museum. G. ‎Brughiera‎

Etching, lettered along bottom 'Ernesto Allason dip Adolfo Bignami inc' followed by title and 'C. Lovera imp.'. Example (platemark mm 202x166; sheet mm 360c260) printed by Carlo Lovera for the monthly magazine L’Arte in Italia, 1870. A cottage set beneath a huge mountain, figures and sheep in the foreground. Bignami combined the activity of painter to that, prevalent, etching, linked to the group of Piedmontese engravers of the second half of the nineteenth century dominated by the personality of A. Fontanesi. Between 1869 and 1870 he lived in Florence, which often depicted in his landscapes. In Turin participated, since 1863, the exhibitions of the Society Promotrice, establishing himself in 1871 with three paintings: The meal of chicks, The last hour of work and The morning mists on the banks of the Arno. In the same year he was noticed at the Promotrice of Bologna with two landscapes judged "of true imprint and conscientious workmanship". The news about his exhibition activity stop in 1877, since the artist had to give up painting early because of an eye disease and family vicissitudes.    ‎

Bibliografia G. Giubbini, L’acquaforte originale in Piemonte e in Liguria 1860 - 1875, Genova 1976, n.1. Etching (mm 229x174; sheet: mm 335x292), monogrammed on the plate at lower left. Exemplar of the second state of two, printed by Carlo Lovera and published in L'Arte in Italia - November 1870. Very good impression. Large margins, excellent conservation.  Alberto Pasini was born in Busseto and attended the Academy at Parma. From 1851 to 1853 he studied under Eugène Ciceri (1803-1886) in Paris, where he completed his training in the atelier of M.E. Isabey (1813-1890). He made his Salon debut in 1853. From his first visit to Persia in 1855, as part of the suite of the French delegation to the Persian Gulf and Tehran, Pasini specialized in views of remote corners of Turkey and Persia. He travelled to Constantinople between 1868 and 1869 and to Asia Minor and Syria in 1873. Pasini was also a seasoned traveller within Europe and from 1878 visited Venice on several occasions, and made a journey to Spain with Gérôme from 1879 to 1883. "Principally a landscape and architectural painter, Pasini came under the influence of Théodore Rousseau and Fromentin in the late 1850s, though his later style reveals affinities with the Néo-grec school of painters. Apart from his Orientalist work, he painted some genre scenes and subjects taken from Turkish history and was also known for his lithographic work.  "After the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), Pasini returned to Italy, but continued to exhibit at the Salon until his death in 1899” (MaryAnne Stevens, ed., The Orientalists: Delacroix to Matisse - The Allure of North Africa and the Near East, exhibition catalogue, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1984, p. 195).

Firmata a matita in basso a destra. Numerata a matita in basso a sinistra: 132/154. misure: mm 170 x 245. Timbro a secco in basso al centro. Impressione eccellente su carta avorio liscia. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Ampi margini oltre la linea marginale. Pittore, incisore e illustratore italiano. Bibliografia Bardazzi/Carli/Djokic, 50. Amadio/Papetti, 78-79. Conti, 29. Woodcut from two block, 1923, signed at lower left. igned in pencil at lower right. Numbered in pencil lower left: 132/154. Sice: 170 x 245 mm. Dry stamp at bottom center. Excellent impression on smooth ivory paper, wide margins. Size: mm 170 x 245. Adolfo de Carolis (1874 - 1926), was born in Montefiore dell’Aso on the 6th of January 1874. He moved to Rome and was accepted as a member of the exclusive society ‘In Arte Libertas’ (Freedom in Art’) which had been founded by his close friend Giovanni (‘Nino’) Costa. This society opposed official styles promoted by the academies and influential art critics of the day and espoused the politics, philosophy and aesthetics of the British Pre-Raphaelite movement. The main figures in the British movement were William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and Walter Crane. These groups were also almost certainly involved with the Freemasons, and much of the symbolism in their work have been identified as Masonic. De Carolis exhibited work at the In Arte Libertas annual exhibition right up to 1901. De Carolis was an artistic polymath, working as a painter (in particular of murals), interior designer, decorator, xylographer (wood engraver), illustrator and photographer, and is probably the best known exponent of Art Nouveau in Italy. He was commissioned to produce murals for the Villa Brancadoro in San Benedetto del Tronto, and the ballroom of the Palazzo della Provincia (both in Ascoli Piceno). He also decorated  the great hall of the Palazzo del Podestà in Bologna with murals. He designed the Baptismal Font at the Cathedral of Ajaccio, and contributed decoration and murals in many other illustrious edifices around Italy, as well as supervising restoration work in the Borgia apartments in the Vatican. He is also known for his stained glass and mosaics at the Villa Puccini in Torre del Lago. His talent and originality was quickly recognised by two of the greatest Italian writers and poets of the day, Gabriele D'Annunzio and Giovanni Pascoli, and he became their preferred illustrator. Among his most popular works were many illustrations for Gabriele d'Annunzio's novels (Il Notturno, La figlia di Jorio) and Giovanni Pascoli‘s books of poems. In 1908 his work was described by a panel of judges in Bologna as ‘magnificent, full of evocative fervour, rich in imagination, and secure in the unity of the whole work’. In the backgrounds of many of his paintings it is possible to recognise the typical landscape of le Marche, which he loved so much. As well as his major works, in his later years he also designed bank notes, theatrical sets, posters, calendars, postcards, advertisements and even product labels. He also wrote essays on art and, from 1922, worked as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. After world war 1 he was employed by the Ministry of War to design medals and certificates for war heroes. He died in Rome on the 7th of February 1928, but, in 1950, his mortal remains were returned to Montefiore by the then mayor, Francesco Egidi, and re-interred in a marble tomb in the church of San Francesco. And ten years later Egidi donated a series De Carolis’ oil sketches for the ‘Salone del Podestà’ in Bologna (the most prestigious public building in the city) which he worked on for over twenty years, between 1908 and 1928.  The De Carolis family also donated the complete collection of engravings on wood (xylography) in 1976.‎

Woodcut, 1908,  printed from two blocks. Excellent impression, printed on ivory paper, wide margins, good condition. De Carolis was an artistic polymath, working as a painter (in particular of murals), interior designer, decorator, xylographer (wood engraver), illustrator and photographer, and is probably the best known exponent of Art Nouveau in Italy. In the first decade of the 1900s, De Carolis devoted a great deal of attention to the evocation of popular themes, linked in particular to representations of seascapes, as this print testifies. The use of more colors and therefore a greater number of woods is well suited to the liveliness of these subjects. After joining in '96 the Roman group In arte libertas, created by the landscape painter Nino Costa, from 1901 he taught ornament in the academy in Florence of the Renaissance masters, of the "terrible" Michelangelo, of Böcklin of the Isle of the Dead. He began to decorate books for D'Annunzio and Pascoli and since 1903 elaborates friezes and articles for the magazine "Leonardo" founded with Papini and Prezzolini.  Among the luxuriant figurations for the Francesca da Rimini (1902), the rusticane of The daughter of Iorio (1904), the lapidarie of the Nocturne of the "Vate" (1917-21), the prints marinaresche express an autonomous poetic. Il varo, L'argano, Il timone, La foce, Le arche - woodcuts made between 1904 and 1908, while the first avant-garde phenomena were exploding in Europe - denote a contemplative lyricism caught up in the symbolist stagnation that characterized the Italian situation at the beginning of the century. But beyond the conventional latent meanings, the manifest ones open - while adhering to the aesthetic fervor of Japanism fin-de-siècle - an ethnographic discourse that becomes more and more urgent, aimed at documenting the unique heritage that the "new leveling civilization" is annihilating. The appeal of 1920 (L'arte popolare, in "La Fionda", Rome) received an enthusiastic response, stimulating a sensitivity that in 1923 led to the establishment of the Royal Museum of Italian Ethnography, since 1956 the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions.‎

He has held various roles within the Italian academic world and his production as an art critic is also impressive, a profession he did simultaneously with that of engraver. In 1935 he promoted the creation of a Xylograph Museum in Carpi, birthplace of the master Ugo da Carpi (ca 1480 - Rome 1532), inviting Italian xylographers to send their artworks, which today constitute an important nucleus of the museum itself, inaugurated in 1937. Together with Carlo Carrà he founded the association of the Italian engravers. His woodcuts are characterized by a classic cut and a formal order, and are soon recognizable. He has been present in as many as six biennials of Venice and seven four-years of Rome. ‎Bartolini Luigi (Cupramontana 1892 – Roma 1963)‎

‎La quaglia‎

‎Acquaforte, 1932, esemplare unico terminato ad acquarello. Lastra 130x220 mm. Firmata e datata in lastra 1932. Titolo autografo a matita in basso a sinistra dove riportata l’iscrizione “unica a colori”. Firma a matita in basso a destra “Luigi Bartolini”. Etching, 1932, unique example finished in watercolor. 130x220 mm plate. Signed and dated on plate 1932. Autograph title in pencil at lower left where inscribed "unique in color". Signature in pencil at lower right "Luigi Bartolini". A unique example of the print is described in several repertories and is reproduced in (Casini editore, Roma 1952).   The present example would therefore be the only one finished in color by Bartolini. Magnificent proof, with margins, in excellent condition. The present example comes from Bartolini's exhibition at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Viotti in Turin, on February 22, 1969. The gallery plaque is enclosed. Born in Cupramontana near Ancona, Luigi Bartolini was the twentieth century Italian etcher, who came closest to the stature of his great rival, Morandi. As a teenager, he saw the collection of etchings, including work by Callot, owned by the Corradi family in Iesi. From 1907 to 1910 Bartolini studied at the Istituto di Belle Arti in Siena, and started to etch c. 1909. He moved to Rome in 1910, where until 1912 he frequented the Accademia di Belle Arti, while also attending lectures on literature and the history of art, and courses on anatomy at the University in Rome. Bartolini studied the etchings of Goya and took lessons on drawing at the Accademia di Spagna. From there, he went to Florence in 1913, where he attended the Scuola del nudo. Bartolini continued his anatomical research, as well as studying architecture, making himself the most assiduous student of all Italian twentieth century printmakers. He also visited the Uffizi and Florentine print dealers to look at the etchings of Rembrandt and Fattori. Bartolini painted his first oils just before the outbreak of the First World War. Although he painted pictures throughout the rest of his career, and was awarded the Premio Marzotto for them in 1956, they have been far eclipsed in fame by his etchings and writings. During the First World War, Bartolini published his first collection of poetry. A very prolific and accomplished writer, in this field he is best known today as the author of the novel, 'Ladri di biciclette' (Bicycle thieves), of 1946, which was quickly turned into a celebrated film by Vittorio de Sica and Cesar Zavattini. After the First World War, Bartolini held a series of minor teaching posts in Macerata, Sassari, Avezzano, Pola, and Caltagirone, while he continued to etch, and started a long career as a polemical journalist and critic of art and architecture. From 1923 to 1929, he wrote for the Naples periodical, 'Cimento', but he also contributed to 'Il Selvaggio', 'Quadrivio', 'Italia letteraria', and 'L'Ambrosiana'. Bartolini's 1924 exhibition of etchings at the Casa d'Arte Bragaglia in Rome was a great success, and later that year he showed 70 etched landscapes of the Marches at the Casa Palazzo di Roma. The following year he visited Paris, where he paid particular attention to the paintings of Van Gogh. Bartolini's political convictions led him to being assaulted by Fascists and hospitalised in 1928. Two years later, he won a prize at the Venice Biennale, where he had exhibited a portfolio of etchings. In 1930, the Turin publisher, Buratti, began to issue a series of portfolios of etchings by contemporary Italian artists under the editorship of Cipriano Oppi, selecting Bartolini for the first album. The following year, Buratti published 'Le carte parlanti', a portfolio of 10 of Bartolini's etchings, which was published in an edition of 20. In 1932, Bartolini shared the first prize at the Prima mostra dell'incisione moderna at the Uffizi with Morandi and Boccioni. His close friend, the leading anti-Fascist art historian, Lionello Venturi, acted as his agent selling his etchings in Paris. Bartolini's correspondence with his compatriots in exile led to his imprisonment, from which he was released on Mussolini's personal intervention. He was then placed under political surveillance. ‎Acquaforte, 1930 circa. Lastra mm 125x165, figlio mm 355x505. Firma a matita in basso a destra “L. Bartolini”. Dedica incisa in lastra, in basso “V. Cardarelli”. From Luigi Bartolini's biography it is clear that in January 1928 he began his correspondence with Vincenzo Cardarelli, which lasted until February 1930. Therefore, the dating of the plate can be traced back to that period. ‎FATTORI Giovanni (Livorno 1825 – Firenze 1908)‎

‎Le cascine‎

‎Acquaforte su lastra di zinco, misure: mm 103 x 190; foglio mm 375x 505. In basso a destra timbro a secco «Centenario Gio. Fattori 1925». Etching on zinc plate, size mm 103 x 190; sheet mm 375x 505. Bottom right stamp "Centenario Gio. Fattori 1925". The plate is kept at the Cabinet Drawings and Prints of the Uffizi.  Example belonging to the Benaglia issue, made on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Giovanni Fattori in 1925, when Giovanni Malesci (appointed by the Master as his universal heir) decided to print 164 plates (for a total of 166 sheets, because two of them were also engraved on the reverse) from among the 178 found in Fattori's studio. Thus, two issues of 50 copies were printed by the publisher Benaglia of Florence, and afterwards the plates were donated to the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe of the Uffizi. Beautiful impression printed on paper with watermark "Crown embattled on the writing UMBRIA / ITALY" and watermark "Oval with letters CPO", wide margins uncut, mint.   Literature L. ‎Acquaforte, 1930 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Titolo scritto a matita in basso a sinistra, firmata a matita in basso a destra Gustavo Rodella. Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary Japanese paper, with margins, in perfect condition.‎

‎BISEO Cesare (Roma 1843 - 1909)‎

‎Ritratto della pittrice Lancelot Croce‎

‎Acquaforte e puntasecca, circa 1900. Titolo a matita in basso e firma autografa in basso a destra “C. Biseo”. Molto rara. Etching and drypoint, circa 1900. Title in pencil at bottom and autograph signature at bottom right "C. Biseo".  Magnificent example, impressed in green ink on coeval paper, traces of old framing, otherwise in excellent condition. Marcelle Renée Lancelot (Paris, January 26, 1854 - ca 1946) was a French painter, sculptor and medallist naturalized Italian. Following her marriage to the sculptor Leonardo Croce, she took Italian nationality, changing her name to Marcella. She lived for several years in Rome, starting in 1895. In addition to painting and sculpture, she devoted herself to the profession of medallist since she was young.  The present portrait of Marcella Lancelot Croce, comparing the biographies of the two artists, dates from the period between 1895 and 1909, between the painter's arrival in Rome and Biseo's death. Work not described by any of the repertories consulted. Very rare. Cesare Biseo painter, watercolorist and engraver, was born in Rome, where his father, Gian Battista, a talented academic painter from Brescia, had recently moved to decorate the castle of Bracciano. Receives therefore from the father the first artistic teachings and, following the parent, spends as a young man a long period in Paris. In 1869, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Suez Canal, the Kedivé of Egypt called him to decorate first his palace in Alexandria and then the Opera House in Cairo.   Having fallen in love with Africa, he visited it several times and in 1875 with Edmondo De Amicis and the painter Stefano Ussi was part of the first Italian mission to Morocco. It draws several albums of sketches, which used to illustrate, along with Ussi, the book of De Amicis, Morocco, published in 1877 by the publisher Treves in Milan. In the same year accompanies De Amicis in Constantinople, then illustrating the homonymous book of the writer published in '78 always by Treves. The great success of both editions consecrates Biseo "orientalist", pushing him to intensify the production of oils and watercolors to Arab subject. Meanwhile in 1875, along with E. Roesler Franz and N. Cipriani, founded in Rome the Society of Watercolorists, of which he became president in 1881. The orientalist vein, in fact, had not made him forget the passion for the landscapes of the Roman countryside, portrayed with great fidelity and original cuts of light ("the bold effect of the sun"), evolving from the original classical taste towards more and more realistic solutions. We also find him among the founding members of the Group of XXV of the Roman Countryside, where Pascarella gives him the nickname of "cariate" for his Egyptian past. He had a studio in Via Margutta and was, as the photos of Oreste Sgambati demonstrate, a frequent visitor to the Caffè Greco, where he was nicknamed "professorissimo" for his mastery at billiards. In addition to the frescoes and decorations of the early days, he painted equally well in oil and watercolor. He also devoted himself successfully to etching, as evidenced by his beautiful book illustrations.‎

‎SIGNORINI Telemaco (Firenze 1835 – 1901)‎

‎Vicolo di paese‎

‎Acquaforte, 1875 circa, priva di firma. Stampata su carta cina applicata su supporto coevo. Etching, circa 1875, unsigned. Printed on Chinese paper applied to carboard. Work not described by the repertories consulted. Telemaco Signorini was born in Florence on August 18, 1835 and, although he preferred literary studies, his father, a modest painter of the court of the Grand Duke, initiated him to the study of painting and he was his teacher. After having frequented the courses of drawing from the nude to the academy of Belle Arti fiorentina, and after having painted from the true one with Odorado Borrani and Vincenzo Cabianca, it begins to frequent the Cafe Michelangelo, approaching the painters that in those years were theorizing the painting of stain, that is the Macchiaioli. During a trip to Paris he knows personally the old Camille Corot, being interested in his painting of landscapes and Constant Troyon; returned to Florence, with the friend Diego Martelli, consolidates the friendship with Silvestro Lega and Odoardo Borrani, together with which it paints in the surroundings of Pergentina, becoming the greater representative of the Macchiaioli. Beautiful example, in excellent condition. Size: platemark, 114x172 mm; sheet 239x325 mm.  On the verso collection mark of Raffaele Alianello (Lugt 5K).‎

‎Processione sul ponte di barche‎

‎Acquaforte, 1932, firmata e datata a matita in basso a destra “E. Brugnoli inc e imp 1932”. Tutti i suoi lavori all’acquarello e all’acquaforte raffigurano canali, lagune, sagre, scene popolari veneziane. Emanule Brugnoli studied at the Academy of his city, student of the set designer Valentino Solmi. Suicide of the master, he went to Venice to spend a few weeks, but the city of the Lagoon conquered him and since 1880 he remained in Venice, devoting himself to portray those views characteristic of watercolor and etching. In 1912 he was appointed professor of watercolor and engraving in the Academy, where he was born precisely the school etching that earned so much fame. In a confession made to Luigi Servolini, Brugnoli indicated James Whistler as his true master in the art of etching. He was an assiduous exhibitor at the Internazionali Veneziane. All his works in watercolor and etching depict canals, lagoons, festivals, popular Venetian scenes.‎

‎ZANCAN Beppi (Torino 1936-2016)‎

‎Cascina nella neve‎

‎Acquaforte, 1978, firmata e datata in lastra in basso al centro. Firma a matita Beppi Zancan in basso a destra. Etching, 1978, signed and dated in plate at lower center. Signature in pencil Beppi Zancan at lower right. Example printed on china paper, in perfect condition. Beppi Zancan was born in Turin on February 14, 1936 into a family of Venetian origin of jurists, doctors and university professors. During the war, he took refuge with his family in the villa in Viverone, where he spent some of the best years of his childhood together with his brother Giampaolo, who later became one of the most famous Italian criminal lawyers. Back in Turin, he attended the classical high school at the Social Institute of the Jesuit Fathers, where he distinguished himself as a brilliant and brilliant student. He graduated in law with Norberto Bobbio, of whom he was an assistant, elaborating a thesis on the philosophy of law on the concept of justice in Dostoevsky, which was much appreciated and received numerous awards. The love for Dostoevsky, which Beppi also read in the original language, remained a constant throughout his life. After completing his military service in Casale, he returned to Turin where he abandoned his university career, due to his incompatibility with the most rigid and canonical formalities, as an intense and eccentric artist that he was. After moving to Milan, he met Arrigo Polillo, director of the magazine Musica Jazz and personnel director of Arnoldo Mondadori, who, appreciating his talents as a musician and recognizing his creative flair, wanted him with him as a publicist and creative. It is of this period, in 1967, his first personal exhibition of engravings, ordered at the gallery L'Arte Antica in Turin. These were engravings of great technical talent, closely related to the work of Beppi Zancan's ideal master, Rembrandt. In 1971 he exhibited again at the Arte Antica of Turin and at the Gabinetto delle Stampe of Milan and in 1974 at the Casino of Sanremo. In 1974, he became a professional journalist and, in 1975, he was entrusted with the direction of Il Mago, one of the most important Italian comics magazines, on the pages of which there were tables of young Italian authors as well as foreign strips, mainly humorous. In that same year he met Carlotta Frattini, who became his wife the following year. Still in 1976, he ordered a new exhibition of engravings, once again at the gallery L'Arte Antica, while the first Turinese exhibition of paintings took place only in 1981, at the Quaglino gallery in Piazza San Carlo; here he exhibited his canvases, in which the imprint of the great impressionists, among whom above all Van Gogh and Cezanne emerged strong and evident. Beppi Zancan's brushstroke, however, remains personal and autonomous, even though it ardently reflects his admiration for those great artists.‎

‎Bartolini Luigi (Cupramontana 1892 – Roma 1963)‎

‎Genziane e cetonia dorata‎

‎Acquaforte. Lastra mm 160x245, foglio 350x500 mm. Firma e data in lastra in basso e in alto a sinistra Bartolini 1957. Bibliografia L. Palumbo Scalzi, Luigi Bartolini Incisioni, Galleria Flaviostocco, Castelfranco Veneto, 1998, pag. 69 (variante tirata a 30 esemplari). Etching. Plate 160x245 mm, sheet 350x500 mm. Signature and date on plate at bottom and top left Bartolini 1957. Pencil print run at bottom center 9/50. Signature in pencil at lower right Luigi Bartolini. Other titles: Vaso di Fiori (Vase of Flowers), Fiori (Flowers), I Fiorellini (The Little Flowers).   The gentians, together with the Marche sources, are one of the subjects most loved by Bartolini. From the years of political exile in Merano until the end of the 1950s, the artist engraved at least twenty versions, ten of which in 1934.   The present subject is taken, with somechanges, from a 1934 plate entitled Genziane. ‎SIGNORINI Telemaco (Firenze 1835 – 1901)‎

‎Novelluccia inconcludente‎

The work is one of 3 etchings by Signorini prepared for the Fornicazioni di Fra Mazzapicchio published by Diego Martelli of Florence and illustrated by Telemaco Signorini.  This is a delightful artist's book, printed in only 100 copies. It is a collection of erotic prose attributed to the Franciscan priest Didaco di San Friano (Borgo San Frediano, in Florence), adorned with three splendid etchings by the Macchiaioli and Impressionist Telemaco Signorini. Together with "Primi passi" (1871) and "Storielline" (1876), this book makes up a triptych that is considered among Signorini's best etchings. "[...]

‎Acquaforte e rotella, 1864, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. IN basso a destra troviamo l’imprint dell’editore Carlo Lovera di Torino. Dimensioni: 420x305 mm (foglio), 215 mm x 175 mm (ovale). Stampata su carta cina, appllicata su carta coeva. Bibliografia Guido Giubbini, L'acquaforte originale in piemonte e in liguria 1860-1875, 1976, p. 193, n. 8, fig. 110.  Etching and wheel, 1864, signed in plate at lower left. At lower right is the imprint of the publisher Carlo Lovera of Turin. Size: 420x305 mm (sheet), 215 mm x 175 mm (oval). Printed on Chinese paper, applied on contemporary paper. This work is taken from the Album Speciale della Società Promotrice delle Belle Arti di Torino. This is the most beautiful of Ferdinando Di Breme's etchings, perhaps the only one in which the artist achieves an effective balance between the precise and minute style of the Lauro tradition and the loose and free style of Fontanesi. Very good condition. Literature Guido Giubbini, L'acquaforte originale in piemonte e in liguria 1860-1875, 1976, p. 193, n. 8, fig. 110. ‎

‎De Sanctis Giuseppe (Napoli 1858 - 1924)‎

‎Tentazione di S. Antonio‎

‎Acquaforte, 1882, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Comanducci A. M., Milano, 1962, Vol. II, p. 608). Etching, 1882, signed in plate at lower right. After a subject by Domenico Morelli. Magnificent proof, printed on coeval paper, with wide margins, in excellent condition. On right S. Antonio Abate, full-length; on left a female figure lying and half-covered by light-colored cloth. In the background a shady landscape. The work reflects the second version of Morelli's painting, made in 1879, in which the Saint is depicted in a different position. De Sanctis reveals his adherence to Morelli's formula ("representing figures and things, not actually seen, but imagined and real at the same time") in the deepening, through the engraving technique, of the light-shadow contrast, which highlights the dramatically theatrical tone of the composition (cf. Comanducci A. M., Milano, 1962, Vol. II, p. 608).‎

From the series: Vedute alter prese da i Luoghi altri ideate - In the lower left foreground, the continuation of the boat and bridge partially seen on the etching The Waggon Passing over a Bridge. On the far bank of the river the monument, framed by a tree and foliage. In the distance beyond a hilly area, view of a town with towers, campanile, domes and a pyramid. Originally this print and The Waggon Passing over a Bridge formed a single plate that was cut perhaps because of a morsure defect occurred in the area of the tree above the small monument. For this reason, the right side of the plate was reduced in height by about 25 mm. There are no known impressions before the cutting of the copper, which was done by the artist himself, as shown by the affixing - in the second state - of the initials A.C. on the lower margin of the plate with The Little Monument. The work belongs to the Vedute altre prese da i luoghi altre ideate... series of etchings dedicated to the consul and friend Joseph Smith, whose execution goes from about 1740 to 1744. It is part of the artistic development of Canaletto not as a marginal parenthesis, but as an essential moment of some stylistic problems, which will find their full realization in the first masterpieces executed in his English stay.   The series groups together sheets that evoke an itinerary that starting from the lagoon, that is from Marghera, passing through Mestre, goes up the course of the Brenta to Padua, not only staged in the cosmorama of Prà della Valle but in a view that marks the passage between the reality of places and the fantasy of caprice. If the Portico with the lantern, undoubtedly one of the highest proofs of Canaletto's engraving art, is a view of full fantasy, the etching with the so-called House of 1741, rejoined with the House of the colonnade, is the evocation of a city, which even though it lacks precise topographical references, is imbued with Venetian atmosphere.   Giovanni Antonio Canal called Canaletto (Venice 17 October 1697 - Venice 19 April 1768)) was the most illustrious protagonist of the Venetian vedutismo of the eighteenth century. Thanks to his contacts with English amateurs and collectors travelling to Venice or living in the lagoon city, Canaletto enjoyed great notoriety in England among the highest aristocracy and even the royal family. Around 1730 his exclusive agent was an Englishman, the consul Joseph Smith: having become a picture dealer, he worked with skill and tenacity to introduce his protégé into the British market of works of art, the most flourishing at the time. Owner of a large workshop and flanked by countless assistants, Canaletto is an artist and a skilled entrepreneur.   In Canaletto's works the lagoon city was depicted with great objectivity: his compositions were always rigorously studied through numerous preparatory drawings, taken directly from life. The "veduta" was one of the most characteristic genres of eighteenth-century painting. It differs from landscape (another genre widespread in the eighteenth century) for the objective representation of places and architecture, achieved through a well-studied perspective. Venice was the center of greater production of "views", with some very important personalities. On verso, collection mark of James Henry Lockhart (Pittsburgh 1912-Rotonda West 2002)-  Lugt 4387. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, good condition.  Bibliografia Bromberg, n. 33 p. 169; Succi, I, p. 278, n. 7.‎

‎De Son Nicolas (Reims, attivo 1625-1637)‎

‎La Cattedrale di Reims‎

‎Acquaforte, 1625, firmata in basso al centro N. Deson Rem. In. Sculp. Bibliografia S. Reed, French Prints from the Age of the Musketeers, p. 124-5, no. 55; LeBlanc 15; M. Sutaine, Nicolas de Son Graveur, Travaux de l’Académie Impériale de Reims, vol. 35, no. 4 (1862), pp. 122-9. Etching, 1625, signed at the bottom center N. Deson Rem. In. Sculp. Et ex. Magnificent proof, rich in tones, of the second state of three with the artist's imprint, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the copperplate, printing crease in the lower left corner, minimal abrasions on the verso, otherwise in excellent condition. Rare etching of the façade of Reims Cathedral by the local artist Nicolas de Son (active 1625-37), who was part of a brief flourishing of native printmaking in the province of Champagne from the 1620s through the 1640s along with such artists as Edmé Moreau, Jean Colin, and Nicolas Regnesson. The large print represents the cathedral’s west front in great detail, with not only the broader compositions of the major sculptural programs clearly delineated, but also several ancillary architectural and sculptural passages, such as the building’s gargoyle waterspouts and the tracery of its renowned painted glass windows. Le somptueux frontispiece seems to have followed upon the success of Moreau’s 1623 etching of the same subject, but surpassed it in technical quality and historical nuance (“The one executed by Nicolas de Son is better”; “In this print, Nicolas de Son demonstrates his astonishing understanding of gothic art, rare at the time” [Age of the Musketeers, p. 124]). De Son, whose early works show the influence of Jacques Callot (c. 1592-1635), demonstrates much of the technical mastery of the famous Lorraine etcher: He contrasts the stony actors of sacred history depicted in the architecture with the varied, minutely rendered inhabitants of the seventeenth-century town interacting with the medieval cathedral, a range of characters from beggars at the main portal, to shopkeepers in their stalls, to upper-class citizens with their horses and carriages. De Son masterfully renders the townscape as it recedes in the distance, showing the precincts of the archbishop’s palace (the Palais du Tau) at the right and the thatched roofs (one being repaired by workmen) of dwellings at the left. De Son’s early pendant etchings, Christ and the Woman of Samaria and The Supper of Emmaus, still show considerable adherence to Callot, but his somewhat later genre scenes (e.g. The Village Fair) and his masterpiece, Suite of Twelve Landscapes, demonstrate more original design choices. The present etching and a similar piece depicting the now destroyed abbey church of Saint Nicaise are the artist’s only two dated works, both 1625. This impression of Le somptueux frontispiece carries De Son’s signature and his excudit, indicating that it is from the print’s second state; a third state exists with the excudit of Edmé Moreau, who apparently acquired the plate after the artist’s death. Virtually nothing is known about the life of Nicolas de Son, who worked as a draughtsman and etcher in Reims, apart from a few signed etchings and a source reference to his death in 1637. De Son produced a small corpus of etchings after Callot, Vignon and Jan Lys as well as two views of the Cathedral of Reims after his own invention, both of which are dated 1625. Bibliografia S. ‎DURER Albrecht (Norimberga 1471 - 1528)‎

Bibliografia Hollstein, 160; Bartsch, 51; Panofsky, 271; Strauss, 135; TIB 1001.251; A. Hass, Two Devotional Manuals by Albrecht Dürer: The "Small Passion" and the "Engraved Passion." Iconography, Context and Spirituality, in Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte 63. Bd., H. 2 (2000), pp. 169-230 (62 pages) Woodcut, 1510 circa, signed lower centre in the image with monogram. From the series The Small Passion. Example from the first latin book edition of 1511. Magnificent proof, printed with tone on contemporary laid paper, irreguralely trimmed to the borderline, very good condition. The apostle in the foreground is reminiscent of the “Heller Altarpiece”, whereas the Virgin bears a close resemblance to Schäufelein’s in the correspondong sheet. Conforming to Scripture, Christ’s followers are surmounted by “cloven tongues as of fire” (Acts 2:1-3) that symbolize the “outpourung of the Holy Spirit”. Contrary to Schäufelein, the event takes place in the open air, and there are many participans as there is no record that the scene was witnessed only by the disciples. However, a detailed study reveals the artist’s personal understanding. The most striking aspect of Dürer’s version of the Penecost is similarly that th inspiration of the Holy Ghost is not confined to Mary and disciples: fifteen flames issue forth from the crowns of Mary and Christ’s old and new followers, while in background three of the devout Jews mentioned in Acts are still seated, looking on and discussing the events before them. While Dürer's expansion of the common number of twelve to fifteen enlightened beings can be justified in terms of the description provided in Acts, it remains a license in pictorial terms. Local forerunners, including Dürer's teacher Wolgemut, principally show twelve blessed figures including the Virgin. Further, in his accompanying text for this image Chelidonius comments on the descent of the Holy Ghost in relation to the disciples only; this too is at odds with the visual evidence in Dürer’s image. The original wood block is in the British Museum. Around 1509, while still completing the Large Passion, Dürer commenced his most extensive series of the Passion of Christ, The Small Passion, which comprises thirty-seven woodcuts. The series was published as a book; each platesi s accompanied by a descritive narrative text composed by Dürer’s friend, the humanist cleric Benedictus Chelidonius, who had previously collaborated with the artist on the texts for the woodcut series of the Life of Virgin and the Large Passion. It was Friedrich Winkler who in 1941 suggested that Hans Schäufelein, one of Dürer’s students, provide the model for the Small Passion, but this proposal is not unanimously accepted by scholars. Angela Hass notes that given what we know of Dürer character and of the relative gifts of the two artists, the Master/pupil relationship alone speaks against it. So, too, does the fact that there is an altered emphasis in both the choice and interpretation of subject matter. Dürer includes nine themes that don't appear in Schäufelein's series , the title page and the four introductory scenes that precede Christ's Entry to Jerusalem, further four legendary scenes were added , they include Sts Veronica, Peter and Paul ; two scenes that feature in Schaufelein's series arc omitted by Dürer , the Disrobing of Christ and , more importantly , the Coronation of the Virgin .  Another reason for questioning Winkler’s view arises from the fact that a substantial parte of the iconography which Dürer employs in the Small Passion series can be traced back to contemporary and prior works of art which were readily available to both artists. ‎Dorigny Michel (Saint-Quentin 1616 – Parigi 1665)‎

‎Baccante seduta con putti‎

‎Acquaforte e bulino, 1650 circa, numerata 11 nell’angolo superiore sinistro. Bibliografia Robert-Dusmenil, IV, p. 254, 14: Reed, French Prints from the Age of the Musketeers, p. 233. Etching and engraving, 1650 circa, numbered 11 at lower left. After training for five years under Georges Lallemand in Paris, Michel Dorigny soon joined the circle around the painter, Simon Vouet, with whom he struck up a close and lasting friendship. Dorigny subsequently became one of the main printmaking interpreters of Vouet’s painted oeuvre and was also involved as a painter in several of the master’s artistic projects. His prints include works on religious and mythological themes as well as individual prints and series on Dionysian topics. It is to this latter category that six etchings belong which Dorigny produced together with Nicolas Chaperon and other artists for the series entitled Recueil de diverses Bacchanales (Robert-Dumesnil, vol. IV, p. 254, nos. 12–17). All the prints in the series contain the addresses of the respective publishers but not the names of the designers and engravers, which makes it difficult to definitively ascribe the works to specific artists. The prints were probably first issued by the publishers François Langlois, known as ‘il Ciartres’ (1589 Chartres – 1647 Paris), and Philippe Huart (active around 1639–1648) and were followed by a second edition published by Pierre Mariette. The designs for the etchings may well stem from Nicolas Chaperon or from Dorigny himself. Another suite of six bacchanals (Robert – Dusmenil 6-11) bears on each plate the name of D’Origny as engraver. Both suites probably date to the 1650 when, after Vouet’s death, Dorigny became one of the most important decorative painters in Paris. Focused on the activities of Bacchus, Silenus, and their merry band of associates, these two etched sets of charming compositions demonstrate the wealth and dexterity of Dorigny's powers of invention. In contrast to most of his earlier interpretations of the works of Vouet and others, where he often used engraving to lightly augment his vigorous etching (see cat. 102), some of Dorigny's later prints, espe- cially these two suites of bacchanals, rely even more on engraving. This trend parallels a gradual shift in his draftsmanship, which reveals an increasing tendency towards pronounced contours and more sculptural figures. A fine impression, printed with tone on contemporary laid paper, with margins, very good condition. ‎AMMAN Jost (Zurigo 1539 – Norimberga, 17 Marzo 1591)‎

Bibliografia The New Hollstein, Part VI.87.144.23.i, p. 87. Etching on iron, 1579, unlettered. First state, of two, before the numbering 6 added lower right in the plate. The plate depicts a king sitting on a throne holding a sceptre in centre background, on the left a scribe, on either side of the room the king's advisors, soldiers standing in the foreground. Set in an oval frame, the corners filled with strapwork ornaments.  A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the paltemark, very good condition. Printed in Catalogus Gloriae Mundi by Barthélemy de Chasseneuz, printed in 1579, Frankfurt - Sigmund Feyerabend. Barthélemy de Chasseneuz (1480–1541) was a lawyer, and he was neither a narrow-minded one nor a bad one – quite the opposite. He had attended French and Italian universities and had been the student of some of the most famous teachers of his time. The talented legal scholar had acquired experience at the court of the duke of Milan and even at the court of the Pope himself. And yet, he returned to his home country in 1506 where he took up high offices. As his contemporaries, Barthélemy de Chasseneuz was convinced that everything on earth had a precise order. He believed that any kind of dispute arose solely from the fact that humankind was unaware of the exact structure of this order. It was obvious that the King of France was of higher status than a juggler. But what about the King of France and the King of Aragon? Who of them was of higher status? Being a good lawyer, Chasseneuz sat down and studied the sources. He wrote more than 1,000 pages setting out which office held which rank based on all theological, philosophical and legal sources available to him – from the hierarchy of the Heavens to the social ranks of humankind and to animate and inanimate nature. In 1529, this book was published for the first time. Chasseneuz’ book was of huge importance to all those who had to deal with issues of ceremonial protocol. All princes and city councillors had enough money to afford an expensive book. That’s why, at some point during the 70s of the 16th century, Sigmund Feyerabend from Frankfurt decided to publish a new edition of Chasseneuz’ work. He did not simply reprint the first edition, instead, he hired the famous book illustrator Jost Amman to transform Barthélemy de Chasseneuz’ theoretical considerations into impressive – and easily understandable – copper engravings.

Numerato 3, in basso a destra. Engraving, signed at the lower center with the excudit of Claes Janz. Visscher (CJV entwined). Beneath the image an explanation in French and in Dutch and a reference to the Bible text in Matthew 15:14. Numbered 3. After Pieter Brueghel the Elder. The blind leader is about to step into a ditch, taking his equally blind followers with him. The guide has a hurdy-gurdy under his cloak. A village can be seen in the background. The scene is a depiction of the proverb and parable: “if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into a ditch”. The meaning of which is: when the incompetent advises other incompetents, things go wrong. The etching published by Claes Jansz. II Visscher is seemingly inspired by De parabel der blinden [The parable of the blind], painted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1568. This hypothesis has been put forward by the Rijksmuseum, which keeps two impressions of this etching. It is etched in reverse compared to the painting, and uses the same composition: blind men, dressed like vagrants, follow a diagonal line across the picture, leading to a river in which they will soon fall; they narrowly missed a small plank bridge upstream, next to a tree. As in the painting, there is a village in the background. However, there are only three blind men instead of six in Bruegel's picture, and the one at the front, wearing the same hurdy gurdy as in the painting over his shoulder, hasn't fallen into the water yet. Not described by Leeber, Bastealer and Hollstein. The Rijksmuseum suggests a date of 1643 in the notice to one of their two impressions, this work is taken from the series Theatrum Biblicum Hoc Est Historiae Sacrae Veteris et Novi Testamenti Tabulis Aeneis Expressae. We believe that a more pertinent date for the work is between 1610 and 1620 and that it only later became part of the Bible published by Claes Jansz. Visscher. The engraver remains anonymous, but it is possible that it is the same author. Visscher, who was born and died in Amsterdam, was also known as Nicolas Joannes Piscator or Nicolas Joannis Visscher II, after his father who lived ca. 1550–1612. He learned the art of etching and printing from his father, and helped grow the family printing and mapmaking business to one of the largest in his time. It was a family business; his son Nicolaes Visscher I (1618–1679), and his grandson Nicolaes Visscher II (1649–1702) were also mapmakers in Amsterdam on the Kalverstraat. The times were with the Visschers for other reasons; due to the Protestant reformation, the older Bibles with their "Roman Catholic" illustrations were seen as outdated and apocryphal, but to liven up the new Protestant Bibles for the less well-read clergy, the Visschers produced illustrated maps and even landscapes of the places in the Bible. This became a very successful family business, with collaboration with many respected draughtsmen of the day. A new translation of the Bible was underway in the Netherlands, and until then, the new German translation done by Johannes Piscator, published in 1602–1604, was translated into Dutch. Though probably not a relative, his Bible translation was accepted by the Dutch Staten-General in 1602, which only lent more publicity and authenticity to the "Fisher" name. The trademark of the Visschers was a “fisherman”, after their name (thus the Latin nickname Piscator). A small fisherman would be strategically placed somewhere near water. If the subject was a landscape without a stream or pond, then often a figure walking with a fishing rod can be seen. Their map plates were reused for a century by other printers who unknowingly copied the entire plates, including the tell-tale fishermen. Observant scholars are thus able to trace the provenance of Bibles, maps, and landscapes from these signs. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, perfect condition.‎

‎REMBRANDT Harmensz van Rijn detto (Leida 1606 - Amsterdam 1669)‎

‎Ritratto di Johannes Uytenbogaert‎

‎Acquaforte e bulino, 1635, firmata e datata in lastra in alto, a puntasecca: Rembrandt ft 1635; sotto l’ovale l’iscrizione Quem pia miarari plebes, quem castra solebant, / damnare et mores aula coacta suos. Esemplare in cornice dorata settecentesca.  Bibliografia Hind 128; Bartsch 279; White & Boon 279, V/VI; E. Inscribed in Latin beneath the image: Quem pia miarari plebes, quem castra solebant, / damnare et mores aula coacta suos. HGrotius. Example of the fifth state of six. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, closely trimmed to the platemark, light oxidations at lower part, otherwise in good condition.  Johannes Uytenbogaert (1557-1644), an important political and theological figure of the period , was a leader of the Dutch Remonstrants and a former chaplain to Maurice, Prince of Orange. Following the views of Jacobus Arminius, the Remonstrants presented to the States-General in 1610 a 'Remonstrance', setting forth their points of divergence from stricter Calvinism. Attacked on all sides, they were expelled from the Netherlands by the Protestant Synod of Dort (1618-19), which declared Remonstrant theology contrary to Scripture. Allowed back in the Netherlands by 1630, they were officially recognised in 1798. The inscription, in Latin, is far more extensive than in Rembrandt's other prints, and was composed by the leading Remonstrant Hugo de Groot - a Remonstrant still in exile in 1635. It alludes to Wtenbogaert's piety and court service, as well as his 'comeback' to the Hague in 1629. Rembrandt had previously depicted Uytenbogaert in a painting of 1633, in which the minister stands before a table and a large opened book (the portrait survives in the Rijksmuseum).    Bibliografia Hind 128; Bartsch 279; White & Boon 279, V/VI; E. ‎COOKE Edward William (Londra 1811 - 1880)‎

‎Roman Wine Cart‎

‎Litografia tinta firmata in basso a sinistra. Roma era una destinazione insolita per un pittore di marine, e Cooke scrisse alla sua famiglia affermando che la stava "prendendo con freddezza" e aggiungendo che aveva 'taking it coolly' and adding that he had 'intended to paint one or two pictures for the Academy whilst here but it was impossible - 1st because I have been out of spirits and poorly, 2ndly the multitude of objects of intense interest have so completely seized all my thoughts since I left Genoa and the sea, that I seem for a time to have lost all my impressions of marine subjects and effects'. Tinted litograph signed at lower left. From a drawing by Cooke himself, now preserved at   Royal Academy of Arts. Edward Cooke arrived in Rome with his sister Laura on December 23rd 1845. Except for a two week excursion to Tivoli, he remained in the city until May the following year. Rome was an unusual destination for a marine painter, and Cooke wrote to his family stating that he was 'taking it coolly' and adding that he had 'intended to paint one or two pictures for the Academy whilst here but it was impossible - 1st because I have been out of spirits and poorly, 2ndly the multitude of objects of intense interest have so completely seized all my thoughts since I left Genoa and the sea, that I seem for a time to have lost all my impressions of marine subjects and effects'.  Nevertheless, Cooke avidly sketched the city's classical and medieval sites during his stay and these formed the basis for several subsequent oil paintings of Roman scenes. Many of the drawings were engraved and published in the two editions of Cooke's Leaves from my Sketchbook (1876 and 1877). In the introduction to these publications Cooke wrote, 'Travels in many countries, extending over a period of fifty years, have filled my Sketch-books with several thousand sketches, which have often served to recall to friends pleasant memories of happy days and sunny climes, and excite a wish to visit places alike remarkable for natural beauty and historic interest.'‎

‎BRAQUEMOND Felix (Parigi 1833 – 1914)‎

An Inside View of the Print Market in Paris (1881) A Contract between Félix Bracquemond and the Arnold & Tripp Gallery to Realize a Plate after Théodore Rousseau, in “Getty Research Journal”, n. 10 (2018), pp. 207-224). Etching and drypoint, 1882, inscribed beneath the image lower left B lower Publie par Arnold et Tripp. & Rue St Georges a Paris. In the image, lower right TH. R After a painting by Théodore Rousseau. Example in the sixth finale state, with the signature and the publisher’s address lower centre. Etched by Félix Bracquemond (1833–1914). Impression signed by Bracquemond, in pencil. Printsellers' Association's blind stamp at lower left. The painting from which the etching comes is Coucher de soleil : ou, Un abreuvoir ( ca. 1850-55 ), which appeared at auction at Sotheby's . New York , 17 February 1993 , lot no . 12 , titled Coucher de soleil dans les landes prés de Begaar and which today is held in a private collection.  The Rousseau painting was the first painting by the important master purchased by the newborn gallery Arnold & Tripp gallery, which had opened in January 1881. The painting was bought from Georges Petit for 20,000 francs od 16 May 1881, and sold the following day for 26,000 francs to the Portuguese collector Pedro Eugenio Daupias. Arnold & Tripp, after having purchased and immediately sold the painting Coucher de soleil , decided to ask Bracquemond to produce a plate from which to derive copies to sell . This indicates that Arnold & Tripp had retained the reproduction rights for the painting , or at least had an agreement with the owner to that effect. The identification of the painting from which the etching comes is therefore particularly interesting because Bracquemond was not contracted to produce an engraving in order to promote the sale of the painting, which the gallery had already sold to Daupias in May 1881. Rather, as was common with artists' etchings, it was aimed at its own particular market of collector, surely interesting in having an engraving of a painting that had become part of a famous collection in Lisbon, and which they would no longer be able to admire in Paris. Recently, in the archives of the Getty Research Institute was discovered a contract between the Parisian gallery Arnold & Tripp and the painter and etcher Felix Bracquemond (1833-1914) in order to realize a plate after a painting by Théodore Rousseau. The contract is part of a group of seven letters, contained in the Arnold & Tripp correspondance, that illustrate all the aspects of the deal, from the formal contract in July 1881 , to the various phases of the proofs, toward the final plate to be presented at the Parisian Salon of 1882. Paolo Serafini, An Inside View of the Print Market in Paris (1881) A Contract between Félix Bracquemond and the Arnold & Tripp Gallery to Realize a Plate after Théodore Rousseau, in Getty Research Journal, n. 10 (2018), pp. 207-224). ‎SANDBY Paul (Nottingham, 1731 - Londra,1809)‎

‎The Romans Polite to Strangers.

La tecnica dell’acquatinta, conferisce all’opera quel particolare tono simile all’acquarello rendendo le opere molto affascinanti.  Aquatint printed in bistro ink, 1781, signed in plate at lower right and dated at lower center. Magnificent proof, printed on coeval laid paper with watermark, thin margins, light abrasions on verso, overall in excellent condition. One of the four famous Roman carnival views engraved by Sandby from a drawing by David Allan (Alloa 1744 - Edinburgh 1796). To the great majority of paintings, engravings, watercolors and drawings that illustrate the festivities of the Roman carnival with an excess of "color", is contrasted this series, which describes those same festive events with a dry and witty look while noting the hidden elegance and sumptuousness. Sandby's aquatints are taken from a series of ten drawings by Allan made during his Roman sojourns and now housed in the Royal Collection of Windsor Castle. Paul Sandby was a landscape painter and printmaker. David Allan was one of the first painters in Scotland to record the everyday life of ordinary people. He was based in Rome from around 1767 to 1777 where he painted historical subjects, portraits and the everyday life around him in a series of watercolours. In Scotland he enjoyed a successful career as both an artist and a teacher of art. Some of David Allan's watercolours of Rome were copied by Paul Sandby in London, as prints. The technique of aquatint (used here) allowed the engraver to create the effect of colour washes with the addition of etched lines for detail. This is a technique that provides an additional layer of meaning to the scene. The aquatint allows tonal variation and contrast which in turn creates atmosphere. There is a tremendous amount of detail in the print, and any British observer at the time would have received a good impression of what Rome was like from this print. Sandby's re-creation of Allan's watercolour would have made the image much more accessible through multiple copies. Only the most popular or marketable images would be copied as prints. The composition is quite complex. The background of the street and buildings is rendered with single point perspective, where the landscape appears to recede away to a single point in the distance. The viewpoint Allan chose was a low one. This means that the buildings appear to loom over the scene and a lot of sky is shown. In contrast, the action on the ground occupies only the lower third of the composition; Allan did not "zoom in" on any one aspect but created a general view of the scene. In this view, two British travellers on horseback are confronted by the extravagant costumes and masked figures from the entertainers at a Roman carnival. Despite their politeness these grotesque figures are slightly disturbing. Perhaps this scene demonstrates the alien and disorientating feeling of visiting a new city and discovering bizarre customs which the traveller has never experienced before.‎

‎Bickham il Giovane George (circa 1706 - 1771)‎

‎The Return from the Chace‎

London: Smith, Elder & Co; Cohen-de Ricci 145-146; Ray, French Illustrated Book, 12 Plate taken from The Musical Entertainer. London: Charles Corbett, [1737-1739 or later]. Bickham was principally known for this engraved work, first issued in fortnightly parts, each with four plates, between January 1737 and December 1739. A second edition was also brought out in parts 1740-41, and a third, printed from the original plates, was issued by John Ryall in 1765. The 200 plates are songs by Purcell, Handel, Haydn, Corelli, Pepusch and others, each headed with an engraved vignette, and quite apart from their musical interest they provide fascinating insight into the social life of the time. Eight of the designs are after Gravelot, and in Ray's opinion many others were imitated from Watteau's Oeuvre, leading him to say the song book "may almost be regarded as French." George Bickham the Younger (c. 1706–1771) was an English etcher and engraver, a printseller, and one of the first English caricaturists. He produced didactic publications, political caricatures, and pornographical prints. He was the son of the engraver George Bickham the Elder (1684–1758), who published the Universal Penman (1733–41). ‎STRUTT Arthur John (Chelmsford, 12 giugno 1818 – Roma, 1888)‎

‎Pilgrim‎

Etching, 1844 circa, signed and dated at the bottom. ‎FISHER Alfred Hugh (1867-1945)‎

‎San Giovanni, Siena‎

‎Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1910 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra Fisher f. Dedicata dall'artista a Malcolm Salaman; iscrizione a matita in basso: "To Malcolm Salaman from the artist, San Giovanni Siena. A. Hugh Fisher". Bibliografia H. Fisher, 'Catalogue of Etchings and Drypoint by A. Hugh Fisher', 1927. Etching and drypoint, circa 1910, signed at lower left Fisher f. ‎MCNEIL WHISTLER James Abbot (Lowell, 10 luglio 1834 – Londra, 17 luglio 1903)‎

‎Chelsea‎

Bibliografia Howard Mansfield A Descriptive Catalogue of the Etchings and Drypoints of James Abbott McNeill Whistler. University of Glasgow, 2012, cat. no. 181 v/v. Etching and drypoint, 1879; fifth state of five; printed in black ink on cream laid paper, good condition. The etchings shows Chelsea Church and old Battersea Bridge, and the original title, 'Chelsea', is preferable although some scholars assign it the name Fulham. Three barges are seen in the middle of the River Thames, the one nearest the bridge manned by two bargees. Behind them is an old bridge, with four wooden piers seen to left, a broad iron span, and then three more piers to right. There are figures, horses and carts on the bridge. Seen through the arches are a steamboat landing-stage, more trees and houses on an embankment on the right, and a suspension-bridge. The tide is low, so that the two right-hand piers are out of the water, and a couple of flat-bottomed barges sit high on the beach to right. To the right, a square church tower rises behind the bridge, the toll-booth is just visible at the end of the bridge, and a substantial square house and other buildings stand at far right, surrounded by tall trees. The etching may have been called 'Fulham' by Wedmore and subsequent cataloguers to distinguish it from other etchings of Battersea Bridge and Chelsea. However, it does not show Fulham. The changes have led to confusion and problems in identifying the subsequent history of this etching. James Abbott McNeill Whistler (Lowell, July 10, 1834 - London, July 17, 1903) was an American painter and engraver, rarely mentioned as James Whistler. A genius at producing intaglio etchings, Whistler was among the most inventive and influential printmakers in history, producing nearly 500 works over five decades. Etching offered Whistler the opportunity to combine speed of execution, drawing ideas quickly on the plate, with the ability to refine and develop them through multiple states, highlighting his complex aesthetic. His work, with such an innovative approach, not only attracted followers and imitators, but influenced the entire art world. ‎HADEN Francis Seymour (Londra 1818 - 1910)‎

‎Old Chelsea, Out of Whistler's Window (Battersea Reach)‎

Iscrizione in lastra, in alto a sinistra: "Whistler's House at Old Chelsea Seymour Haden ft. an[no] 1863". "All the foreground boats have vertical reflections. There is now a line at the base of the house most to the left, which extends almost to the margin of the plate. This plate 'wore out very soon and had to be destroyed before it had given its full quota of impressions. Published in Études à l'eau-forte (No. VIII.), under the title of 'Old Chelsea,' some copies having the First, others the Second State. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1865." [cf. Harrington, p. 28] "There are several preliminary drawings for this print […] similar in composition though the view point is from farther into the river. State VII. Published in Études à l'eau-forte (N. VIII). Line added at base of house on left and a few lines to indicate modeling at right on the wall. The smoke, rising from the chimney of the house, second from the right of Whistler's house, is no longer visible." Lettered in plate, lower left: "Whistler's House at Old Chelsea Seymour Haden ft. an[no] 1863".  Etching and drypoint; second state of two (Harrington); seventh state of seven (Schneiderman). The smoke, rising from the chimney of the house, second from the right of Whistler's house, is no longer visible." [cf. Schneiderman, p. 143] Seymour Haden was the unlikely combination of a surgeon and an etcher. Although he pursued a very successful medical career, he is mostly remembered for his etched work as well as for his writings on etching. He was one of a group of artists, including James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) and Alphonse Legros (1837–1911), whose passionate interest in the medium led to the so-called etching revival, a period that lasted well into the twentieth century. The extolling of etching for its inherent spontaneous qualities reached its pinnacle during this time. While the line of the etching needle, Haden wrote, was "free, expressive, full of vivacity," that of the burin was "cold, constrained, uninteresting," and "without identity." Printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, perfect condition.
