Medical School University of Michigan
African American and Women's Medical Education University of Michigan Medical School Class Portrait 1928
1928. Randall Studio. University of Michigan Medical School student and faculty portrait 1928 documents racial and gender inclusion within a major American medical school during a period when African American and women physicians remained sharply underrepresented in medical education. The portrait supports research into professional training race gender and institutional access in interwar medicine especially because the group includes one African American man and four women among 82 students. The University of Michigan had admitted women beginning in 1870 and Sophia B. Jones became its first African American woman to earn a medical degree in 1885 giving this later class portrait added relevance within the school's longer history of medical education and inclusion.

Silver gelatin photograph by Randall Studio. 1928. 22 x 18 inches. Mounted to photographer's board. The large-format image shows 82 students and faculty arranged in individual portrait format including four female students and one African American student. The scale and formal presentation identify the photograph as an institutional record of a medical cohort rather than a casual class image.

The photograph captures a visibly limited but historically meaningful presence of women and an African American student in elite medical training before mid-century civil rights reforms. Small 1.5-inch tear to one corner barely affecting one of the 82 images; very small chips to side and top edges not affecting text or images; very good. Strong visual evidence of race gender and professional formation at the University of Michigan Medical School in 1928. unknown

French School
Portrait of a young Chevalier wearing the Collar of the Order of Saint Michael his hand resting on his sword hilt.
French School late 16th century. Oil on panel 655 x 470 mm octagonal; originally part of a larger work; a vertical split running the length of the panel has an old expert repair on the reverse; housed in a recent frame. A beguiling sixteenth-century French portrait of a member of the Order of Saint Michael. The Order of Saint Michael Ordre de Saint-Michel was founded by Louis XI of France in 1469 as a response to the Burgundian Order of the Golden Fleece. It was the highest chivalric Order in France for over a century until the introduction of the Ordre de Saint Esprit in 1578. Its members included the French monarchy and the upper echelons of the French nobility as well as many important figures of the period such as Cesare Borgia James V of Scotland Edward VI of England Henry Stuart Lord Darnley and Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester on whom the Order was bestowed by the French monarch of the time. The Order was dedicated to the Archangel Michael whose image was engraved on the gold medallion presented to every member. However the Order's collar or chain which features twelve enamelled gold scallop shells - symbols of holy pilgrimage - remained its most prestigious insignia right up until 1830 when the Order was dissolved. Only three authenticated examples of the Collar of the Order of Saint Michael have survived: two in Dutch collections Rijksmuseum and Paleis Het Loo and one in France Musée de la Légion d'honneur. unknown

Tulip Drawing.
Holland 18th Century. . Water-colour on Dutch laid paper some light spotting and toning to paper. Framed and glazed overall size: 38.7cm x 45.7cm. Dimensions: 180 x 130mm. 7 x 5 inches.
From a "Tulip Book" in the manner of Anthony Claesz who produced his own "Tulip Book" in c. 1641. These florilegia were commissioned to illustrate the differences between varieties of tulip bulb which at the time demanded such high prices. The beauty of these works ensured that their images would be copied for decades to come by amateur painters and gardeners alike. Claesz was a Dutch master in his own right with several highly accomplished works to his name. However as with most of the great Dutch masters of this period they happily supplemented their income by illustrating such books. It also allowed them to study in detail subjects that would later be incorporated in their great flower pieces.

Provenance: Private Dutch collection.
[Holland, 18th Century]. unknown
