(l'Auditeur National).
L'AUDITEUR NATIONAL. Convention Nationale. Declaration of the Rights of Man. 60 consecutive issues of this significant political journal consisting of numbers 222 through 282 dated "Du mercredi 1 mai 1793" through "Du dimanche 30 juin 1793" "L'an second de la republique Francaise" bound together in one volume.
Paris: Imprimerie du Journal rue du Foin-Saint-Jacques 1793. 1793. Good. - Octavo 8-1/4 inches high by 5 inches wide. 60 issues bound together into contemporary full vellum with holographic title labels on the spine. Faded ink annotations on the covers would suggest that the vellum covers themselves were recycled at the time from even earlier documents. The covers are stained the labels are chipped and the bottom portion of the spine is heavily chipped. 480 pages in all each issue consisting of 8 pages with a banner title at the head of the first page of each issue and the publisher's credits printed at the bottom of the last page of each issue. The bottom front corners of the pages are heavily dampstained. There is minor worming with very slight loss to the first issue #222 and a very minor wormhole to issues 233 through 235 with occasional loss of a letter. A small piece torn from the bottom corner of the last leaf of issue #227 results in the loss of but one letter. Pages 5 and 6 of issue #244 are torn but without loss although there is some slight loss to pages 6 and 7 where the pages once stuck to each other. Several page corners are creased. There is some rare occasional underlining in ink with even fewer discreet marginal annotations. A good consecutive run of this scarce periodical covering the National Convention during the years it forged France's first republican constitution during the French Revolution.
Originally titled "Auditeur national journal de legislation de politique et de litterature" when it began publication in 1791 the sub-title was removed as of September 22 1792. - Ref.: Eugene Hatin's "Bibliographie historique et critique de la presse periodique francaise.".
This daily evening newspaper provides a day by day account of the events that took place during one of the most remarkable periods in French history. Among the important events of this period were the uprising of the Paris Commune against the Convention the formation of the Extraordinary Commission of Twelve Commission extraordinaire des Douze the revolt of June 2 1793 which led to the expulsion of the Girondists and the rise of the Jacobins the establishment of a maximum price for bread and most important the debate which ultimately led to the ratification on June 24 1793 of the new Constitution. This Constitution included the expanded "Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen" Declaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen. It was this period of time that set the stage for the Reign of Terror.
The publication of the articles chapitres of the first republican constitution also known as the the "Montagnard" Constitution commences in the June 12 1793 issue of the newspaper No. 264. The 36 articles of the DECLARATION DES DROITS DE L'HOMME ET DU CITOYEN are published in the issues of June 24/25 1793. These rights expanded from the 1789 Declaration now included the abolition of slavery the right of rebellion the right to work to public education and public assistance and the right of association.
The writing of this constitution is often attributed to Marie-Jean Herault de Sechelles.
RARE. (Mexican Revolution). Armstrong, James H
THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION. A 6-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. A first hand account of an attack on the village of Zimapan by "rebels" Zapatistas.
Zimapan Hidalgo Mexico August 7 1935. 1935. Very good. - sc - Six pages consisting of over 1000 words penned on both sides of 3 sheets of 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/8 inch wide buff-colored paper. In a lengthy letter James H. Armstrong the author of this account responds after reading a book which Mrs. McDougall has sent him. The book Rosa E. King's "Tempest Over Mexico" which had just been published that year has stirred up Armstrong's memories and feelings. He doesn't view the "rebels" The Liberation Army of the South known as the Zapatistas with as much fondness "She rather idealizes Zapata though strangely she makes no mention of his brother who accompanied him all the time and glosses over the terrible cruelty of the Zapatists." He goes on to describe at length an attack by the Zapatistas "When the town was attacked by the rebels for the first time I had advance information from one of the rebel sympathizers who worked for us so was not surprised when a group surrounded the town and demanded that the small garrison surrender or else the place would be taken by 'sangre y fuego' - 'blood and fire!' The town authorities decided to resist and the women and children of the principal families were gathered into the big house." He goes on to describe that night and the "all-day attack" which followed until "through their scouts the rebels received word that a relief column was coming so they retired and that unpleasant spell was over." Describing a subsequent attack he writes of joining the "Jefe Politico a very good friend" who'd organized a little band of volunteers to escort the women as they would all try to reach the next town. The group was overtaken and to protect the women surrendered to the Zapatistas. "As a foreigner I was deputed to approach with a white flag and arrange terms. One of the women gave me her white petticoat to flaunt and up the hill I went." Signed "Jas. H. Armstrong". The pages are folded once horizontally and twice vertically for mailing. There is some minor soiling with creasing to the right edge. Very good.
A very entertaining first hand account of an event during the Mexican Revolution.
The writer James H. Armstrong was an American superintendent of the Hidalgo Copper Mining & Smelting Company in Zimapan Hildago. Zimapan, Hidalgo, Mexico, August 7, 1935. unknown

(NEW ENGLAND / EDUCATION)
Autograph Manuscript unsigned
AM unsigned 19pp recto and verso 4 3/4" X 7 3/4" n.p. n.y. ca. 1870s. Very good. Bit of faint age toning and old folds neither strong nor weakened. Quite attractive and frustratingly cryptic unsigned Autograph Manuscript two-punched at top and string-tied with original pink ribbon. Fascinating firsthand recollections of the writer's early education in a New England country school house apparently penned for some kind of commemoration. All told a dense meaty manuscript that must be read in its entirety to be appreciated. Opens with: "It is a difficult thing to describe an old place which you have not seen for years to a company of friends who have never seen it; a ruler and a compass seem indispensable a rough sketch on paper to show its position and its various surroundings but who among us here can fail to describe most accurately and who can fail to comprehend without the aid of riveted compass and finely pencilled drawings a country school house a New England School house with its ragged walls and still raggeder urchins with its four windows with its one door with its rows of old desks long since hacked by the idlers of other days with its ink spots dropped years before with its benches all scratched over with school boy hieroglyphics and last and not least but first with that old that honorable that respected that indispensable institution to Every New England town the village 'School mom'." He then gives a few vague specifics: "In the years 1847 & 1848 there was a small white house in a village north that has since been torn down. If we were to measure off 200 feet in 27th Street on the lower side of the Street West of the Third Avenue should locate there the Old Academy where two short years we studied. Six young zebras sent from the turmoil of the city to the quiet country there by labor of mind and of body to blend beauty with intelligence alas it was a failure from lack of ingredients ." He describes their beloved "School mom" "She was a nice young lady a little above the medium height with light hair and very mild blue eyes her dress was always plain and becoming. and she was loved by us all young and old thought Miss B. was perfection and how could we help it we fresh from the Schools of Gotham." going at length into her benevolent teaching style and her mysterious personal life. He addresses the family who lived in the house Dominis the appearance of the school and its grounds the pupils' pastimes and pranks the owner of the house "an old Jesuit. always prowling round inserting his long lean crooked nose in the School house. the wealthiest & the meanest" etc. All very Dickensian very Norman Rockwell -- sentimental and charming viewed from perhaps a half century or more later. Penned in brown ink in a handsome easily legible small hand. Although some clues do crop up that may help identify this academy and perhaps the writer we have been unable to do so despite all efforts. unknown
