‎""" Reconstruire l'éducation a pour sous-titre "" L'avenir d'un désir "" : en effet, on n'apprend rien sans désir et on ne réforme rien non plus sans un désir partagé. Tout le livre gravite autour de ces deux notions : l'envie d'apprendre et l'envie de reconstruire l'éducation sur d'autres bases. Sans vouloir rejeter totalement le système actuel, l'auteur propose une série de mesures simples pour permettre une meilleure éducation : il faut avant tout prendre en compte le fait qu'il n'existe pas UN profil d'élève-type, mais une multitude d'individus différents. Il faut donc commencer par redéfinir complètement le statut de l'élève, ainsi que le système actuel d'évaluation, qui ne tiennent pas compte pour l'instant de cette pluralité bien présente à l'école. On ne peut évaluer de la même façon des élèves issus de cultures et de sociétés différentes. De plus, évaluer ce qu'a retenu un élève et ce qu'il sait réellement sont deux choses bien différentes : apprendre un savoir ne suffit pas, il faut l'acquérir, et ce, définitivement. L'élève doit être capable de partager son savoir aux autres, devenant ainsi autonome, condition sine qua non pour trouver sa place dans la société. Car il faut toujours avoir en tête que l'école est avant tout là où se joue le futur de chacun. S'appuyant sur les thèses des neurosciences (principalement sur l'ouvrage L'homme de vérité, de Jean-Pierre Changeux), Gilbert Dalgalian s'intéresse au rôle que joue le cerveau humain dans le processus d'apprentissage : on n'apprend pas de la même façon à 5 ans et à 17 ans, tout simplement parce que l'on n'est pas la même personne à 5 ans et à 17 ans. Ainsi, dépassant le simple cadre de l'école, les changements proposés par l'auteur permettraient de faire un pas en avant au niveau pédagogique, mais aussi et surtout social. Prendre en compte l'extrême diversité des profils d'élèves, apprendre en produisant et en manipulant, réhabiliter le partage du savoir, tester ses acquis sur le réel, saisir les premières initiations au texte avant la lecture, repenser le statut de l'élève dans l'éducation, révolutionner l'évaluation : voilà autant de pistes pour que désormais l'institution éducative anticipe au lieu de subir.
