br. Negli anni '50 una rete televisiva americana affidò un programma alle ore 20 ad un vescovo cattolico allora sconosciuto ai più di nome Fulton Sheen. La trasmissione si chiamava "Life is worth living" (La vita vale la pena di essere vissuta). Il suo pubblico crebbe a dismisura e diventò un fenomeno di massa con milioni di spettatori e dopo 4 anni l'autore fu premiato con un "Emmy Award" come "il più eccezionale personaggio televisivo dell'anno" con ascolti simili a quelli del programma di Frank Sinatra. Il segreto del successo stava oltre che nell'abilità oratoria dell'autore, nell'aver colto la trasformazione della società occidentale che ha abbandonato i valori giudeo-cristiani. Questo chiedeva un nuovo modo di annuncio del cristianesimo molto più "esistenziale" e capace di rivolgersi alla vita quotidiana del popolo e alle attese profonde di ogni persona che rimangono vere in ogni tempo. In Verità e menzogna l'autore compie un profondo e accurato esame delle idee contemporanee riguardo alla morale, alla scienza, alla religione e al tema della evoluzione. Scoprirà che spesso l'aggettivo "moderno" è un'etichetta applicata ad un vecchio errore.

Abû-Muhammad Muslih al-Dîn bin Abdallâh Shîrâzî, (1193-1292), Persian poet and prose writer, widely recognized as one of the greatest masters of the classical literary tradition. His influence is not limited to Persian literature. He also deeply affected Turkish and Urdu literature and the Western world (Encyclopadiae Iranica). Bostan [i.e. the Orchard] and Gulistan [i.e. the Rose Garden], his famous Works, were translated into many languages and commented. Pendname is one of Sa'dî's poetical works. In this ethical-based work, ethical values such as science, justice, consenting to fate, honesty, patience, generosity, modesty, and grace are praised. Bad habits such as talking to ignorant, cruelty, lie, arrogance, and stinginess are badly criticized. The Persian text of Sa'dî's Pendname, it's an English translation, and Ottoman Turkish translation in verse were printed together in the early 20th century. The work is about some moral characteristics that are seen as "acceptable and submissive" in societies and have been recited with the idea of benefiting people. Major William Henry Carmichael-Smyth, (1780-1861), was a British military officer in the service of the East India Company and an orientalist. Carmichael-Smyth returned to India in 1810 as a captain and served in the Invasion of Java in 1811. Thereafter he returned to Bengal and went to Callinger as a field engineer where he was mentioned in dispatches for exemplary valor in 1812. br. Don Bosco è uno dei santi più celebri e più fraintesi della storia della Chiesa. Anche se di certo non mancano i libri che parlano di lui, raramente la sua figura e, soprattutto, la sua spiritualità sono presentate in modo corretto e completo. Come Cristina Siccardi dimostra attingendo alle ricchissime fonti primigenie - le più attendibili in assoluto -, egli visse sempre di "sogni", cioè fu continuamente visitato dal Divino, perché chiamato a realizzare un grande progetto nel quale la dimensione soprannaturale e quella naturale dovevano toccarsi e che avrebbe condotto i ragazzi "peggiori" a divenire degli "onesti cittadini e dei buoni cristiani" (nel senso in cui il Santo intendeva tali qualità e che il libro svela fino in fondo). Quello che emerge da queste pagine non è dunque il "santo sociale" ideologicamente impostato, non è il "manager" così in voga negli anni '70 e '80, non è il precursore della moderna psicologia, né tanto meno del Concilio Vaticano II, ma un uomo fatto di cielo e di carità, che si adopera per instaurare il Regno di Dio sulla terra. Uno straordinario sacerdote che lottò indefessamente, seguendo gli indirizzi della Tradizione e usando gli strumenti della dialettica e della carta stampata, contro errori ed eresie, contro il liberalismo e la Massoneria, difendendo con coraggio, passione e determinazione la fede cattolica e la sua Chiesa.

br. Lo chiamavano il prete della forca perché spesso si presentava alle esecuzioni capitali seguendo il condannato a morte fino al patibolo per abbracciarlo e farlo sentire amato. Prete e formatore di preti in un'epoca di grandi figure di santità sacerdotale, Giuseppe Cafasso (1811-1860), contemporaneo di don Bosco, era nato in una famiglia contadina di modeste condizioni e di profonda fede. Ordinato prete a 22 anni, entra nel Convitto Ecclesiastico torinese dove rimarrà per tutta la vita, come insegnante prima e poi direttore spirituale e Rettore. Come spesso accade, a una fragilità fisica associava una forza d'animo e una grande capacità di ascolto e di conoscenza dei problemi e delle fatiche della gente che a lui si riferiva con fiducia. Ha vissuto la sua esistenza tra il Convitto ecclesiastico di Torino e le carceri regie della città, divenendo punto di riferimento per chi cercava sostegno e consolazione e modello per molti sacerdoti, tra cui don Bosco, che guidava con sapienza.
