A lecture given at Oxford. London Longman Green Longman and Roberts 1862. Blank before half-title blank at end; pp.viii69i printer’s imprintii; publisher’s inserted 32pp. catalogue at end dated August 1872; dark green ripple-grain cloth ruled and blocked blind on sides ruled blind lettered and with short rules gilt on spine; top- and fore- edges uncut; end-papers coated caramel. Useful ownership inscription dated ‘May 1875’ on front blank; end-papers faded at margins; otherwise an extremely fine copy. This binding unrecorded by Carter: the cloth is that of his ‘A’ binding but the lettering on spine is that of his ‘B’ binding Arnold’s name being however in a serif face instead of a sans serif face as in copies of his ‘B’ binding that we have seen. The spine lettering reads ‘LECTURE’ not ‘LECTURES’ in our experience as always the latter probably representing a transcription error on Carter’s part. The present copy is almost certainly one of the latest issued in ripple-grain cloth: the date of the inscription 1875 being the earliest date recorded by Carter for a catalogue in a copy with his ‘B’ binding. Carter does not mention end-papers. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover

Contemporary pencilled ownership inscription on upper margin of title-page; otherwise a very nice copy. Scarce. Useful ownership inscription dated 1888 on front blank; otherwise an extremely fine copy. The Carter ‘B’ binding but the spine lettering reading ‘LECTURE’ not ‘LECTURES’ the latter probably representing a transcription error on Carter’s part variant without inserted advertisements. Arnold’s name in this copy appears in a sans-serif face. Carter does not mention end-papers: the ship and swan design was introduced at about the same date as the inscription.
