This is a full 10 volume set of the complete novels of the famous British author Thomas Love Peacock in the definitive collected large-paper edition limited and numbered this set is No. 58 of 100.<br /> <br /> Thomas Love Peacock 1785 - 1866 was an English novelist poet and official of the East India Company. He was a close friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley and they influenced each other's work. Peacock wrote satirical novels each with the same basic setting: characters at a table discussing and criticizing the philosophical opinions of the day.<br /> The set includes:<br /> 1. Headlong Hall<br /> 2. Melincourt - 2 vols.<br /> 3. Nightmare Abbey<br /> 4. Maid Marian<br /> 5. The Misfortunes of Elphin<br /> 6. Crotchet Castle<br /> 7 Gryll Grange - 2 vols.<br /> 8 Calidore & Miscellanea<br /> <br /> All volumes are in very good to near fine condition in the original tanned cloth with gilt titles on the spines. All spines are darkened but the bindings are all tight and sound. The end papers show darkened spotting likely from the original glue but the text with deckled page edges is all still clean and bright with no marks at all. There is a small bookseller's label at the top of each front pastedown. Many pages are still uncut and overall the set appears to have had very little use. all volumes except the two second volumes have their frontispieces with original tissue guard pages.<br /> <br /> . Being a collection of shorter works including Calidore: A Fragment of an Unfinished Romance The Four Ages of Poetry and Horae Dramaticae I-III amongst others. Crochet Castle 1891. Peacock assembles a group of eccentrics each with a single monomaniacal obsession and derives humour and social satire from their various interactions and conversations at Crochet Hall. Gryll Grange 1891. Complete in two volumes. The author's final novel beginning with a discussion around the dinner table of Mr. Gryll in which his friend the genial gourmet the Rev. Dr. Opimian holds forth on misnomers fish and the contemporary fashion for lectures. Headlong Hall 1891. A novella which makes good-natured fun of contemporary literary trends. It follows the fortunes of Christopher Glowry a morose widower who lives with his only son Scythrop in the isolated family mansion Nightmare Abbey. In the original full cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spines and board edges. The odd small mark. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean.
