The Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches
New York: A. C. McClurg & Co 1903. First Edition. First edition first printing. x 265 pp. Bound in publisher's original black cloth ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Fine with bright gilt and well-defined blind stamping; clean and bright contents. Evidence of bookplate removal to paste down subtle bowing to front board. A superb copy of a cornerstone of African American literature.
In an effort to portray the genius and humanity of the black race Du Bois published The Souls of Black Folk a collection of 14 essays. James Weldon Johnson said the book's effect on African Americans was comparable to that of Uncle Tom's Cabin. The introduction famously proclaimed that "the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color line". Each chapter begins with two epigraphs – one from a white poet and one from a black spiritual – to demonstrate intellectual and cultural parity between black and white cultures.
A major theme of the work was the double consciousness faced by African Americans: being both American and black. This was a unique identity which according to Du Bois had been a handicap in the past but could be a strength in the future: "Henceforth the destiny of the race could be conceived as leading neither to assimilation nor separatism but to proud enduring hyphenation. Du Bois, W E Burghardt
The Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches
London: Archibald Constable & Co 1905. First British edition. Hardcover. Very good. The first British edition two years after the American of one of the Library of Congress's 88 Books that Shaped America: "'Few books make history and fewer still become foundational texts for the movements and struggles of an entire people. The Souls of Black Folk occupies this rare position' said Du Bois biographer Manning Marable. Du Bois’s work was so influential that it is impossible to consider the civil rights movement’s roots without first looking to this groundbreaking work."

"It is difficult to comprehend how daring it was for W. E. B. Du Bois to publish the most acclaimed book of his career in the face of this avalanche of beastly labels rushing down onto the Negro. Du Bois stared into the grisly faces of the racist past and present and decreed that blacks were not soulless beasts. In publishing The Souls of Black Folk on April 18 1903 Du Bois argued implicitly that the world needs to know the humanity of black folk by listening carefully to the 'striving' in their souls. And we can hear in the book the strivings in the soul of Du Bois as much as we can hear the strivings in the souls of other black folk. Today it still SHOULD BE READ AND STUDIED BY EVERY PERSON."—Ibram X. Kendi Paris Review

xi 1 265 1 pages plus an inserted frontispiece portrait of the author with a tissue guard. First UK edition with no statements of later printings. This is a very attractive copy of Du Bois's landmark work with a bit of bumping at the spine ends and corners. DU BOIS, W E B
The Souls of Black Folk
Chicago: A. C. McClurg 1903. Third printing. Hardcover. Good. Octavo 264pp. Stated "third edition" really the third printing; issued less than four months after the first. In good condition only in the publisher's black cloth with gilt titling and top edge gilt. Some droplet stains fading and light edgewear to the boards and the top inch of the front free endpaper excised also a little loose but holding. Contents clean if somehwat shaken; still sound. Some rusty offsetting from a paperclip has affected the outer margins of a few leaves and left two tiny holes in the margin of one leaf. Du Bois's landmark collection of essays which draw from his own life but are grounded in social science and an understanding of the material conditions of African-Americans during the nadir of race relations in America. Perhaps the most enduring concept introduced in this book is Du Bois's "double consciousness" the experience of constantly viewing oneself through the eyes of a racist society and measuring oneself against those racist conceptions.

The first edition has become a five-figure book. This early printing which matches the first edition in both the content and the binding is a reasonable substitute. A. C. McClurg hardcover

Du Bois, WEB W E B
The Souls of Black Folk
Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co 1903. First edition. Near Fine. A clean Near Fine copy of W.E.B. DuBois' first book. A bit of fraying to head and tail of spine and a subtle blemish to upper board. An excellent copy overall.

The Souls of Black Folk was Du Bois' first and most famous book a "monumental" work "filled with spirituality and with spontaneity" that represented a turning point both in the field of sociology Blockson Commented Bibliography 52. Notably the book coined the framework of "double consciousness" in regards to Black people's self-perception capturing the notion that Black people by necessity viewed themselves and the world through their own perspective while simultaneously anticipating the perspective of other non-Black people. Du Bois already an established writer and sociologist had previously published several studies of Black life in the United States including The Philadelphia Negro 1899 as well as a study of Black people in business but The Souls of Black Folk went further: Du Bois' "conceptions were historical and global his methodology empirical and intuitive his values and commitments involving both mobilization of an elite vanguard to address the issues of racism and the conscious cultivation of the values to be drawn from African-American folk culture" ANB. The result was a revolutionary work of sociology that shapes conversations on race community and identity to this day. The importance of The Souls of Black Folk cannot be overstated.

Also see Blockson 4028 third edition. Near Fine. A.C. McClurg & Co unknown
