Du BOIS W. E. Burghardt. FULLER Meta Warrick. FULLER Solomon
THE GIFT OF BLACK FOLK. The Negroes in the Making of America
Du BOIS W. E. Burghardt. THE GIFT OF BLACK FOLK. The Negroes in the Making of America by W. E. Burghardt DuBois. Introduction by Edward F. McSweeney. Boston Massachusetts:: The Stratford Co. Publishers 1924. First edition Partington 2348; Blockson 2917; published as part of the "Knights of Columbus Racial Contribution Series". . Binding is lightly tanned with gilt lettering on spine quite dull few very faint soil marks on front and rear covers gilt lettering on front cover is bright early light brown stain on bottom edge and fore edge of text block faintly visible at outer edge of blank margins of a few pages of text front flyleaf tanned with offsetting from ink inscription else a very good copy; text otherwise quite fresh and clean. . Artist Meta Warrick Fuller and her husband Dr. Solomon Fuller's copy with contemporary ink inscription possibly in hand of Meta Warrick Fuller: "Dr. & Mrs. S. C. Fuller/ Warren Road/ Framingham/ Mass." in ink holograph in an early hand on front pastedown. Artist Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller 1877-1968 a sculptor "was one of the most important precursors of the Harlem Renaissance" see Driskell. 'Harlem Renaissance: Art of Black America' p. 25. She trained at the Pennsylvania Museum and School for Industrial Arts and studied with Rodin in Paris who proclaimed her "a born sculptor" cf. Patton. 'African-American Art' p. 107. Benjamin Brawley described her as one of the first artists to explore "the tragedy of the Negro race in the New World" Driskell p. 27. She is considered by some to be the first African-American woman professional artist and in 1907 she was the first African-American woman to receive a Federal commission for her art cf. The African-American Registry; cf. Belton. 'African-American Art and the Political Dissent during the Harlem Renaissance'. "By the early 1920's Fuller had become one of the preeminent black artists of her time. As her principle advocate and close family friend Du Bois sought out Fuller for the 'America's Making Exposition'" cf. Ater. "Making History: Meta Warrick Fuller's Ethiopia" in 'American Art' Vol. 17 No. 3 p. 15. Her meeting with W. E. B. Du Bois is thought to have brought about a turning point in her career by encouraging her to incorporate more African and African-American themes into her art. Du Bois commissioned her to do a piece to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation which led to her most famous sculpture 'Ethiopia Awakening.' Her husband Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller 1889-1953 was the first recognized African-American psychiatrist. "His portrait hangs with those of psychiatry's founding fathers at APA headquarters in Washington D.C." see Ozarin. "Solomon Carter Fuller: First Black Psychiatrist" in 'Psychiatric News' Vol. 37 No. 17 p. 19. Meta Warrick Fuller and her husband Dr. Fuller who lived in Framingham Massachuestts were friends of DuBois and they are mentioned by W. E. B. Du Bois in this book as African-Americans who have contributed to "the Making of America" see pages 315 and 316 of 'The Gift of Black Folk'. In addition to ink ownership inscription of the Fuller's on the front pastedown the book also has a few pencil scorings throughout the text in an unknown hand. Small octavo blue cloth stamped in gilt pp. iv 349. Contains chapters on Black Explorers Black Labor Black Soldiers Freedom of Womanhood Negro Art and Literature etc. The Stratford Co., Publishers, hardcover
