Philadelphia PA: George W. Jacobs & Company 1909. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover a beautiful example of this scarce biography in borderline fine condition. Blue cloth boards with gilt text on spine. Gilt is bright and cloth shows only minor spotting and handling with the exception of the rear board which has a loss to the cloth finish along the outside turn-in edge. There is also a faint bump in the cloth at the upper right corner. This is the reason why this book is not great as fine. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. This book was part the personal library of Sallie E. Robinson who was a 19th-century African-American civil rights activist whose prominent family eventually settled in the Philadelphia area. Her signature is present at the top of the front pastedown and then twice more on the rear end page. The collection of her works we received included photographs and personal notes as well as her collection of books for civil rights history and justice. This is one of the books from her personal collection. Her signature appears on the front pastedown and the very last index page. Pages are clean and paper is bright. Copyright page shows a single publication date of September 1909. This is likely one of the best-known examples of this title.

George W. Jacobs & Company hardcover
