(ALNWICK) DAVISON, William Printer &c.

LETTERPRESS BILLHEAD OF WILLIAM DAVISON apothecary, chemist, and druggist, copper-plate and letterpress printer.

Single leaf, (140x168mm), sometime folded, a small tear in the head margin and a small hole slightly (due to `spiking') in the centre, with some loss from the handwritten area. An invoice from Davison to John Proctor a Hartlepool printer and bookseller, listing ink and pills. It is interesting that Davison, by the date of this invoice well-established as one of the foremost and energetic printers in the North of England, still styles himself primarily as a chemist. A further point of interest, to historians of the economics of the book trade, is that at the head Davison notes that `all running accounts to be settled at Christmas and Midsummer' while at the tail that `Newspaper accounts to be settled every three months, as the London agents will not continue the newspapers to those who allow them to remain longer unsettled.'

to the Bodies of Men, Women, and Children. Translated out of Latin into English... Whereunto is Annexed a Prefatory Discourse Concerning the Method of Studying and Practising Physick; and Other Accomodations Relating to the Same... London: Printed for T. Passinger... T. Sawbridge... and T. Flesher..., 1686. 2 parts, 8vo, (32), 516; 360pp, engr. frontisportrait, (books 4-6 with separate pagination). Contemp. calf (later period-style rebacking with raised bands and morocco label). Upper board detached, light dampstain throughout final 100pp, otherwise generally clean text, lightly toned at edges. A good copy. ¶ First Edition in English of the Encyclopaedia medicinae theoretico-practicae by Johann Dolaeus (1651-1707), which first appeared at Frankfurt-am-Main in 1684. The compendium draws from the ancient classics of Hippocrates and Galen, as well as the modern works of Paracelsus, Jean Baptiste van Helmont, Thomas Willis, Frans de la Boe, and Descartes. ¦ The polymath William Salmon (1644-1713) became 'one of the earliest and most successful writers on popular science and medicine' (Heirs of Hippocrates), producing translations and compendia in the areas of anatomy, surgery, pharmacology, botany, mathematics, astrology and alchemy. His fine library of over 3500 books was dispersed at his death in a series of sales by Thomas Ballard. Upon the testsimony of the auction catalogue, Ferguson judged Salmon 'a man of erudition, and of wide and liberal tastes... [as well as] a thoroughgoing bibliophile'(Bibl. Chemica II, p.319). [GARTH, SAMUEL, SIR.]

The dispensary: a poem. In six canto's. The third edition corrected by the author.

London, printed and sold by John Nutt, 1699. 8vo, pp. [22], 90; contemporary full calf, unadorned spine; minor wear, some page edges worn; good and sound, or better. Garth (1661-1719) was both a physician and a poet, and a fellow of the College of Physicians. On the last page of the Harveian oration at the College of Physicians, Garth "alludes to a scheme, which had been discussed in the college from 1687, for establishing a dispensary where poor people could obtain advice and prescriptions from the best physicians. While a large majority of the fellows of the college supported this scheme, a minority allied themselves with the apothecaries of the city, who tried to defeat the plan, chiefly by charging exorbitant prices for the drugs prescribed. In 1699 Garth published ëThe Dispensary, a Poem,í which is a record of the first attempt to establish those out-patient rooms now universal in the large towns of England. ëThe Dispensaryí ridicules the apothecaries and their allies among the fellows. It was circulated in manuscript, and in a few weeks was printed and sold by John Nutt, near Stationers' Hall. A second and a third edition appeared in the same year, to which were added a dedication to Anthony Henley, an introduction explaining the controversy in the College of Physicians, and copies of commendatory verses. A fourth edition appeared in 1700, a sixth in 1706, a seventh in 1714, and a tenth in 1741. The poem continued to be generally read for fifty years, and some of its phrases are still quoted. It describes a mock Homeric battle between the physicians and the apothecaries, Harvey being finally summoned from the Elysian fields to prescribe a reform" (DNB). Wing G275.
