[ Disraeli, Benjamin ]
Endymion
London: Longmans Green and Co. 1880 First edition of the last novel the author published before his death. Publisher's red cloth spine lettered in silver. Floral patterned endpapers. Three volumes octavo. Cloth slight soiled and gentle lean to spines. Spines slightly toned. Front hinge slightly cracked in Vol. II. Intermittent very minor foxing. Gathering R in Vol. III loose but holding. Small binder's ticket to rear pastedown of Vol. I. Overall a very good set Benjamin Disraeli's 1804-1881 novel Lothair 1870 was the first ever published by a prime minister and was a huge success. Endymion was composed primarily in the 1870s. Disraeli was paid £10000 by Longmans for the rights which at the time was believed to be the greatest sum then paid for a work of fiction. Endmyion is a romance and a survey of British politics between 1827 and 1855. It both recreates and emphasizes the importance of aristocratic – especially female – social influence on political fortunes. In the novel it is female influence that helps the conventional insipid courteous Endymion a Whig to rise to the premiership; he also manages to progress by not offending the insular prejudices of a commercial country. Endymion is named after the shepherd from Greek mythology which would have been familiar to eighteenth-century readers from the 1818 poem by John Keats 1795-1821 with that title. Vivian Grey
London England: Henry Colburn 1934. Hardcover. Good. London: Henry Colburn 1834. 5 volumes in 4 Volumes I & II in one; Volume III Volume IV and Volume V. It was first published in 1826. This appears to be a second edition. Set is neatly disbound without endpapers. Text is very good. Foxing to endpapers. No former owner marks. One of the first if not the first in this series the title page reads: "Colburn's Modern Novelists Vivian Grey in Five Volumes." No author is named. Disraeli's first novel was published anonymously. In it he told the story of a failed business dealing with his father's friend the notable London publisher John Murray. After talking Murray into launching The Representative a daily newspaper Disraeli unable to pay his promised share of the capital quarreled with Murray and others. In Vivian Grey he lampooned Murray while telling the story of the failure. Disraeli was unmasked as the author and was widely criticized. Copies of the anonymous editions are rare. The series of Colburn's Modern Standard Novelists noted as 1835â41 in 19 vols. contained works by Thomas Campbell Bulwer Lytton Theodore Hook and Harrison Ainsworth Lady Morgan Robert Plumer Ward Horace Smith Marryat Thomas Henry Lister G. P. R. James and George Robert Gleig. Colburn also numbered among "my authors" Disraeli John Banim and fashionable novelists of the day. Among his most notable accomplishments as a publisher were the publication of the first edition of John Evelyn's Diary in 1818 and Pepys's Diary in 1825. Not available for priority/expedited shipping. Due to the size/weight of this book extra charges may apply for international shipping. Henry Colburn hardcover

Uncle Tom in England Or a Proof that Black's White An Echo to the American 'Uncle Tom' and Venetia
London: Houlston and Stoneman 1852-3. Leather. Good. 6.5" by 4". None. Two interesting novels bound as one. The first Uncle Tom in England appears to be an english novel which draws a parallel to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The author is not attributed although to the rear there is an essay by anti-slavery campaigner and president of the British and Foreign anti-slavery society Thomas Clarkson. To the preface is written that the author has connected its plot to the work of Mrs Stowe and is therefore to be looked on as an Echo or sequel to 'Uncle Tom'. Several characters share their names with Stowe's. This is the third edition of Uncle Tom in England printed the same year as the first American edition. Uncle tom in England is an extremely scarce and unusual text. The second novel to this text is Benjamin Disraeli's novel Venetia. Venetia was originally released in 1837 and was published so as to form an income for Disraeli in a time of need. It is a romance based on the characters of Shelley and Byron. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart with heavy rubbing to spine and boards. Spine label and head and tail of spine are particularly rubbed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown 'John P Maitland Family Heriloom'. Another inscription to recto of front endpaper dated 1918. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Good Houlston and Stoneman hardcover
