Three separate titles, first title printed in red and black within a broad typographical woodcut border, numerous fine woodcut initials, and some fine ornamental woodcut tailpieces in the preliminaries. (32), 339, (1 blank); 135, (1 blank); (2), 197, (1 blank) pp. The first edition of the popular history of Doctor Johann Faustus, published with extensive commentaries and morals by Georg Rudolff Widman. The Faust legend took shape before 1540, but its first literary form took shape when it was published in 1587, by Johann Spies at Frankfurt. The book immediately became very popular and before 1592 it was translated into English. It inspired Marlowe to his dramatization of the Faust character. Marlowe's play in verses in its turn was brought back to Germany by travelling comedians. Both versions developed along their own lines, and inspired literary authors, poets and playwrights through the ages, to name only two: Goethe going back to the drama, and Thomas Mann reverting to the original Faust. The first Faust-book told of the wicked life and terrible death of a magician in alliance with the devil, and was largely made up of tales accumulated round a historical figure. Vagabond, quack and necromancer, he was referred to by some as George Sabellicus, by others as Johann Faust, by some located at Erfurt, by others at Wittenberg, and by yet others at Ingolstadt. Earlier tales of magical practices, occultism and demonology completed the Faust legend. The present edition was extensively commented upon, with the intention to make the Faust more respectable for a wider public, but the ponderous commentaries rather affected its popularity. The next edition in 1674, with comments by Johann Pfitzer, was less prolix and improved by the reintroduction of Faust's liaison with Helen of Troy which Widmann for prudish reasons had omitted. Still, Widmann's edition represents an essential and important chain in the literary history of the popular Faust legend. Good copy, with the armorial bookplate of Theodor Karajan, and old owner's ms. entry, dated 1659, on first blank.- (Binding sl. soiled; small restoration to title, last leaf, and to right lower corners of 2 lvs. with small loss of text; some staining and browning).
