Hull No. 12 An exceptional time lapse souvenir album featuring 36 linen-backed photos documenting the construction outfitting and completion of the SS Western Light for the United States Shipping Board Contract from March 11 1918 to July 26 1918 just before she steamed to Arica Chile to load a cargo of nitrates for the War effort.
Portland OR: Northwest Steel Co. SW Moody Avenue 1918. Oblong 4to. 12 x 8.25 in. 36 original linen-backed silver gelatin photographs sized 10 x 8 in. mounted on hinges all w/ notes & dates w/in the negative at lower right corner. Contemporary flexible calf “Badger Line Loose Leaf†post-binder leather of steel “L†bracket nested spine brass screwposts painted black manuscript title label affixed to spine some chipping edgewear minor scuffing & wear to front hinge still a VG exemplar w/ all photos retaining an excellent bright strong contrast. This informative time lapse souvenir album provides an essential visual history of shipbuilding during World War I in the Pacific Northwest and the efforts of West Coast shipbuilders such as the Bowles’ brothers to fulfill quickly contracts for the United States Shipping Board and support the U.S. War effort. Hull 12 originally to be named “Pershing†but christened SS Western Light upon launching May 27 1918. Bound in reverse order as photos were added during construction the rear first photo dated March 11 1918 depicts the vast shipyards located downstream next to the Ross Island Bridge on Moody at the foot of Sheridan Street. Amidst the forest of scaffolding East Portland can be seen looming in the distance with just faint hints of Mount Tabor area and the Cascades in the far background as well as views of historic Queen Anne Victorian homes such as the Poulsen House on SE McLoughlin Blvd. as well as others ranged along the bluffs of the Willamette. Also visible in several photos are the looming expandable bladder oil tank once located in East Portland by the River. Photos show quick progress in Slip 4 Hull 12 with workers shipyard workers laying the keel hull installing steam pipes decking and finally within 7 weeks on April 30 1918 most of the upper deck is complete pilot house under construction and race by workers to complete the hull for launching by May 20 1918.The series of photos shot of the bow May 27 1918 begin with scaffolding starting to be dismantled the hull painted and workers starting the initial phase at the stern. Featuring finally large U.S. Flag draped over the bow cheering workers watching the hull moved down the slipway into the Willamette River and final shot in the sequence shows her from the side being towed for outfitting and painting for her commissioning date of July 30 1918. With anchor chains heavy pulleys machinery and more supplied by Willamette Iron & Steel Co. from across the River name carefully blacked out in nearly all photos except one which follow views of the hoists boilers pilot house controls crew’s quarters galley officer’s mess and the ship finally under steam all dated July 26 1918. The SS Western Light ID-3300 by this time had also been completely painted with her wartime camouflage colours. She departed Portland after commissioning to Chile loaded nitrates and passed through the Panama Canal by Sept. 17 1918 arrived Philadelphia PA Oct. 7 1918 where she loaded US Army supplies for the American Expeditionary Force departing Nov. 4 1918 and arrived a week after the armistice with Germany. She continued sailing three more transatlantic voyages and finally decommissioned and transferred back to the US Shipping Board May 14 1919. She was later scrapped in the UK in 1938. The Bowles’ brothers first established the shipyard for Northwest Steel Co. in 1916 right next to Columbia River Shipbuilding Co. of Portland which at the time they managed and were also noted attorneys and investors in J.F. Duthie & Co. Originally founded in 1903 the company’s primary focus was constructing cargo ships for the USSB and managed to build 37 of the “West Boats†series as part of the significant effort to construct 5500-gross ton steel-hulled cargo ships. In Feb. 1919 Northwest Steel left the structural steel field and Cullers’ Northwest Bridge & Iron took over that end of the business while hunting for a new plant site. Joseph Bowles 1869-1945 was indicted for bribing government officials during wartime in 1918 and convicted of contempt of court. The shipyard was later operated by the City of Portland as a municipal woodyard employing unemployed homeless men in need of board and lodging and still later operated by Schnitzer Steel. The site now located between Ross Island Bridge and the Tilikum Crossing Bridge has been proposed for the Portland Diamond Major League Baseball project stadium in the Zidell Yards. Although Multnomah County Library includes a group of 12 photos of ships constructed by Northwest Steel Co. this cataloguer could find no similar album or historical printed record of the West Boats constructed by the Company from 1918-1919.
