ABRAHAM ORTELIUS
HAND COLORED ENGRAVED MAP OF ARTESIA (AMSTERDAM) 21.5" X 17.25" 1587 . (LBC) [G[. UNKNOWN 1587
Fine with no dust jacket Map Color Illustrations; Folio 13" - 23" tal; Detailed scans available front and back including a page of Latin language script. Two small nicks at top right at edge of blank margin. In acrylic. Finely executed engraved map of Amsterdam. "Abraham Ortelius was a Dutch geographer and cartographer, born in Antwerp on April 14, 1527. He studied Greek, Latin and mathematics in Antwerp and worked as a map and book dealer. He also spent time with cartography and published the first world atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', which was probably the first collection of maps in the shape of a book, 20 years before Mercator published his world atlas. In its time, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' was so successful, that it had to be re-printed 4 times in the first year of its publishing alone. Between 1570 and 1612 the atlas was published in 42 editions and the 7 languages Latin, German, Flemish, French, Spanish, English and Italian. It proved to be an enormous success for Abraham Ortelius and his beneficiaries. Abraham Ortelius was the first cartographer, who named the sources of his maps by mentioning the cartographers. Any subsequent editions after 1598 were published by Jan Baptiste Vrients, who purchased the rights after the death of Abraham Ortelius and his beneficiaries. Abraham Ortelius also produced a collection of place names 'Thesaurus Geographicus', which is of similar importance. Abraham Ortelius died in 1598."

The expedition was a great success, they returned with a huge collection of geological samples, fauna, shells and fossils, along with 195 botanical samples. Due to this successful expedition Baudin became one of the most respected sea-farers in France and later he was given the command to a huge 1800 expedition to Australia.Present in this copy is the Ledru's updated edition of Thomas Lopez de Vargas Machuca's extremely rare wall map of Porto Rico and Vieques. 8vo. Contemporary three-quarter roan with marbled boards, gilt ruled and lettered spine. Folding lithographed frontispiece of H.M.S. Gorgon by T.G. Dutton and 16 numbered engraved plates by W.A. Beever and J.E. Wood after the drawings by the author, including 4 folding, and a large folding chart of the Bay of Monte Video. VIII, (1), 113 pp. First and only edition of this remarkable story by Sir Astley Cooper Key (1821-1888), the later admiral, of the refloating and repair of the vessel H.M.S. Gordon after it had been stranded in the Bay of Monte Video on May 10th 1844. The Gordon arrived in the River Platte in June 1843, and by May 1844 she was anchored off Montevideo where her cables were severed during a violent gale. Driven on shore, far above the high-water mark, the vessel was left imbedded in sand to a depth of thirteen feet. Key was only the ship's junior lieutenant, but his scientific training enabled him to take a prominent share in the work of getting the vessel afloat, and at once marked him as a rising man. Key had entered the navy in 1833. In February he had joined the Curacao going out to the east coast of South America, where, in February 1844, he was transferred to the Gorgon, with captain Charles Hotham.A splendid career was waiting him. From 1847 till 1850 he commanded a steamer in the Mediterranean; from 1858 till 1860 Key was a member of the royal commission on national defence; he played an important role in the establishment of the Royal Navy College at Greenwich; till in July 1879 he was appointed principal naval aid-de-champ to the queen and in August first naval Lord of the admiralty. Presentation copy dedicated by the author to "(Admiral) Augustus Phillimore. MACROBIUS, THEODOSIUS AMBROSIUS & CENSORINUS.
IN SOMNIUM SCIPIONIS EX CICERONIS VI LIBRO DE REP. ERUDITISSIMA EXPLANATIO. EIUSDEM SATURNALIORUM LIBRI VII. CENSORINUS DE DIE NATALIA, ADDITIS EX VETUSTO EXEMPLARI NONNULLIS, QUAE DESIDERABANTUR. VENICE, IN AEDIBUS ALDI & ANDREAS ASULANUS, APRIL 1528.
8vo. 19th-century blind ruled brown calf, new endpapers. Woodcut printer's device on title and verso of last leaf, some astronomical woodcuts and a world-map (k5r) in text. (8, the last 2 blank), 322, (323: colophon), (2, the first blank) ff. (Collation: *8, #8, a-z8, &8, A-Q8, R4]. First and only Aldine edition of three astronomical treatises, of which the first two by Macrobius and the last by Censorinus. The works of Macrobius, a 5th-century Roman grammarian and Neoplatonist philosopher were of great popularity throughout the Middle Ages. - The first work recorded here is Macrobius' neoplatonic commentary on Cicero's Somnium Scipionuis (ff. 1r-94v). Macrobius uses passages of Cicero's work as mere suggestions to construct a treatise on Neoplatonic philosophy - the most satisfactory and widely read Latin compendium on Neoplatonism that existed during the Middle Ages. Macrobius' lengthy excursuses on Pythagorean number lore, cosmography, world geography and the harmony of the spheres established him as one of the leading popularizers of science in the Latin West. His excursus on the heavens present the stock features of popular hand-books on astronomy. When Macrobius discusses the order of the planets, he is purposely ambiguous because by his two infallible authorities, Plato and Cicero, differ about the position of the sun. The world-map on f. 77 shows the inhabited world north of the Equator balanced by a southern continent and divided from it by water. Among about 150 manuscripts recorded by Destombes dating from 1200 to 1500 AD nearly 100 contain a simple map illustrating Macrobius' theories. Such a map accompanies the Brescia-edition of 1483; it is circular and very simply executed from a woodblock. A number of different blocks and variants of Macrobius' maps have been recorded. Reprints of Macrobius' works, with maps, continued to appear from Venetian presses throughout the 16th century in at least 1521, 1528 (this edition), 1565 and 1574. There was also a Basle edition of 1535 where the outline of Africa has been updated according to more modern concepts.- The second work concerns Macrobius' Saturnalium (ff. 95r-292v) containing an account of the discussions held at the house of Vettius Praetextatus (c. 325-385) during the holiday of the Saturnalia. It was written by the author for the benefit of his son Eustachius, and contains a great variety of curious historical, mythological, critical and grammatical discussions. The first book is devoted to an inquiry as to the origin of the Saturnalia and the festivals of Janus, which leads to a history and discussion of the Roman calendar, and to an attempt to derive all forms of worship from that of the Sun. The second book begins with a collection of bons mots, to which all present make their contributions, many of them being ascribed to Cicero and Augustus. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth books are devoted to Virgil, dwelling on his learning in religious matters, his rhetorical skill, his debt to Homer and to other Greek writers, and the nature and extent of his borrowings from the earlier Latin poets. The primary value of the work lies in the facts and opinions quoted from earlier writers. The form of the Saturnalia is copied from Plato's Symposium and Gellius' Noctes atticae; the chief authorities are Gellius, Seneca, Plutarch, Athenaeus and the commentaries of Servius.-The last work (ff. 193r-322v) is by Censorinus, a Roman grammarian and miscellaneous writer who flourished during the 3rd century AD. He wrote two main works, De accentibus and De Die Natalia of which the last is recorded here. It has been written in 238 AD and is dedicated to his patron Quintus Caerellius as a birthday gift. The content of this work can be divided into three parts: a general introduction, one part on the life of man, and one on time and its divisions. The chief authorities used were Varro and Suetonius. AMSTERDAM, WED. NICOLAUS VISSCHER, 1719.
Large folio. Contemp. vellum, ribbed spine, blindtooled centre piece on covers, gilt title, red sprinkled edges. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece by A. van der Laan after A. de Lairesse, full-page engraved map of the river Vecht, and 98 beautiful views of country houses and gardens along the river Vecht, designed and engraved by Daniel Stoopendaal. (2), 16, 37, (1 blank) pp. text. First edition of the 'Triumphant Vecht', with the famous print-series of the rich country houses and gardens along the river Vecht, numbered 1-98, two views printed on one leaf, all versos blank. Daniel Stoopendaal was active at Amsterdam from 1685 to 1713, and he drew all the houses and gardens from nature, mostly seen from across the river, resulting in beautiful views of the meandering river Vecht. The gardens of several houses were drawn also from several other angles. The series gives a good impression of the rich and large classical gardens of the period. The beautiful country houses along the river Vecht were built in the last decennia of the Dutch Golden Age for the summer pleasures of the rich ship owners and merchants of Amsterdam, mostly mentioned by name in the titles underneath the plates. All views are also extensively praised and explained by Andries de Leth (1671-1732), who edited the print-series after the artist's death. His text, dated December 1718, covers the first sixteen pages preceeding the prints. At the end of the print-series another 37 pages of text contain a lengthy poem by Claas Bruin, describing a pleasure trip on the river Vecht, praising all houses and gardens he passes, with an extra poem inserted for "Ouderhoek", the country house of his friend Antoni van Hoek (1649-1720). On plate 49 is depicted one of the three visits of Czar Peter the Great to Van Hoeks' estate Ouderhoek in 1717.The first two views show a plan of the city of Utrecht and a profile view of Utrecht with the Dom rising high into the sky. The two last views show the two smaller cities at the end of the river Vecht, Weesp and Muiden. Weesp is seen from the side of the sluice, and the view of Muiden includes people working at the strengthening of the river bank. Like the title, the text underneath the views is bilingual, in Dutch and in French facing each other. The popularity of Stopendaals work resulted in the republishing of the Zegepralende Vecht in the same year. In 1791 a new edition appeared under the name De Vechtstroom. Some consider this to be an edition of less quality because of the frequent use of the same plates. The Zegepralende Vecht and the later De Vechtstroom differ on several points: Plate 19 of the estate Harteveld shows in the 1719 edition the house with windows with shutters. The 1791 edition shows English slide windows. There are also some minor differences in the depicting of the pavement in front of the house. As mentioned before Zegepralende Vecht was issued twice in 1719. The first edition contains 98 plates of which 4 plates of the House of Driemond (plates 93-96) . In the later 1719 edition this was extended with four more plates of the House of Driemond (plates 94a-94d). The Vechtstroom contains the 8 plates of Driemond. Another (minor) difference in the first 1719, and the later extended 1719 edition is in plate 96. This plate with the pond of the Driemond estate is different in both editions. Different plates seem to have been used. Also in plate 94, in the last 1719 edition there are two statues behind the hedge, in the first there are none. Very fine copy. Springer p. 47; Hollstein XXVIII, 55; A. Lisman, Bij de nieuwe uitgave, uit: De zegenpralende Vecht, reprint 1998.

TRANSLATED FROM THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT. LONDON, G.G.J. & J. ROBINSON, 1790.

With the portrait of the author in roundel on the title 0f the first vol., engraved by Heath, and 23 (all issued) numbered engraved plates of which 17 are folding, with maps, charts, views and inhabitants of Madagascar etc. 12, (2), XXXIII, 422, (2); (4), 399 pp. First edition of the interesting account of the travels and memoirs of Count Mauritius Augustus de Benyowsky (1746-1786). According to the title the account is based on Benyowsky's original journal, which he in 1783 had presented to J.H. Magellan, a descendant of Ferdinand Magellan, for publication in the United Kingdom. It was translated by William Nicholson. Benyowsky, a nobleman of Hungarian origin, had travelled to Poland and Lithuania where he was involved in military operations relating to the struggle of independence of Poland from the Russian rule. After being captured by the Russians in 1770, he was sent into exile to Kamchatka, the peninsula at the eastern Siberian coast. With other prisoners, however, he managed to escape by sea in 1771. On their journey they visited Japan, Formosa, Canton, China and the northern Pacific, well before James Cook and La Perouse. His voyage to Macao was the first known voyage from the north-east to the south-east shores of Asia. The present work contains interesting details on Siberia, the Russian fur trade and the history, life and customs of the natives of Kamchatka. There is also a description of the Kurile and Aleutian islands and Benyowsky claims to have landed on Alaska. In the name of the French government he later led made an expedition to Madagascar to establish a French colony of which an interesting account is included. Back in Paris Benyowsky became a close friend of Benjamin Franklin and Casimir Pulasky. In 1779 he followed Pulaski to America and offered his services in the American Revolution. With Benjamen Franklin's assistance he founded an American-British company for business with Madagascar. As the independent ruler of the island he challenged in the name of his empire the European powers. That apparently was too much: Benyowsky perished as Malagasy monarch in 1786 in fights with the French.Besides being the author of this bestseller, Benyowsky became a rich source of inspiration for writers, poets and composers. The play Count Benyowsky (or The Conspiracy of Kamtschatka), a tragicomedy in five acts by the German playwright August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue (1761-1819), for instance, had its premier in the US in Baltimore in 1814. Even a popular TV series "Vivat Benovsky" was broadcasted in the '70s of the 20th century.A German translation appeared in 1791; an annotated English edition was published in London in 1904 and a French annotated edition in 1999. The work is richly illustrated with maps, charts, plans of the journey as well as of the French settlement on Madagascar:1.(I). Five plans of the Battle of Lelki, Grodek, Zuanciecz, Braha, and Zuka.2. (II). 'Carriage drawn by dogs; used at Kamchatka'.3. (V) The entrance of the river Bolsha. The bay Maurice on Beerings island. Drawing of a ship.4. (VI). Views on Beerings island and The Kurilles islands.5. (VII). Two views on Kamchatka seen to the Northward (Cape Apachazana), and 'Land in sight May 29, 1771'.6. (VIII). The map is put together from eight adjoining sheets in two rows of four, with a total size of 190 x 80 cm, and in a scale of 1:20,000. On our map we see the four titles of the maps of the upper row at the top, and four identical scale bars at the bottom. Almost the complete area of this map is now part of the city of Tokyo itself. Just like all city plans of Tokyo, our map does not give details of the areas within the walls of the imperial palaces. On the cardboard slipcase and on verso of the map, a strip of paper is pasted with the Dutch title: "Kaart van Tokio en omstreken. Schaal 1/20.000". OHATA, BUNJIEMON.
HISHU NAGASAKI NO ZU (PLAN OF NAGASAKI, HIZEN PROVINCE). NAGASAKI, OHATA BUNJIEMON, AN'EI 7 (1778).
615 x 875mm. Original red cloth paper boards with title label pasted on front cover and additional writing in Japanese characters; preserved in later blue cloth slipcase (170 x 95 mm), closing in Japanese style with two ivory clasps. Large folding woodcut map of the port and city of Nagasaki, printed on four sheets in black and grey. Very fine and rare map of the harbour of Nagasaki, with mountainous landscape in the background and Chinese junks, a ship from Siam and Dutch vessels standing out in the harbour, one of the Dutch ships being towed by Japanese oared craft to the Dutch trading post on the artificial island Deshima, left of the centre of the map. The plan is composed of four sheets and gives a very detailed image of the depiction of the foreign trading port, city, streets, temples, shrines, and rivers, together with a view on the harbour and mountainous surroundings. This is the second edition of the map. The first edition was printed in Horeki in 1764, making our map the first map of the city actually printed in Nagasaki, and the first which Ohata signed in his name. Ohata Bunjiemon is the founder of the Toshimaya at Katsuyama street in Nagasaki some time during the Horeki era (1751-1764). This edition of the map shows some important modifications, in that the names of the streets, temples, and government offices are given in Chinese characters (as opposed to katakana in the Horeki edition) was made in 1778, when the Tokugawa Shogunate government had approved trading with other countries. The two inserts with Japanese characters give the distances between Nagasaki and neighbouring domains, as well distances (by land and sea) between Nagasaki and important cities throughout Japan. Very good copy.- (Small skilfully repaired tear along one fold).
