376 x 486 mm. Mounted at upper margin. Contemporary handcoloured engraved plan by Willem Cornelis van Baarsel (1791-1854) and Petrus Nicolai Tuyn (1812-1867), printed on linen. With very extensive legends in Dutch, English and French in 3 corners and with separate original letterpress index leaf (mounted at left margin on the same mount). Intriguing copy of a nice and colourful plan that was first published around 1839 (d'Ailly 426) and that was republished 6 times with alterations and additions afterwards. Our copy almost exactly matches d'Ally's description (441) of the fourth state of the map, with the list of hotels including the Hotel de Commerce and with (as in the 3rd state) the 4 city districts indicated with colour, a list of the 6 police stations (founded in 1844) in lower left corner and indicating the Rijnspoorweg with station. However, d'Ailly's copy is not coloured and he mentions the erasing of three Postal services (numbers 106-108 erased in our copy but still vaguely visible) only as being elements of the 5th state (d'Ailly 474). This means that our copy must be an unrecorded state between the 4th and 5th states. D'Ailly furthermore does not mention a separate letterpress index for any of the 7 known states of the map. Note that this index was clearly printed to accompany this specific map: all the directions are correct and the general introduction to the index is in the same three languages as the legend on the map. Good copy.- (Folds; occ. unobtrusive brown stains; letterpress leaf sl. creased and with sm. tear). Cf. D'Ailly 426, 431, 440, 441, 474 and 475.

The book was meant as a memento of Holland's eminence and beauty and of the glory of country-life and the prosperity of its inhabitants. Furthermore it served as an example for the arts of drawing, painting, engraving, sculpturing, architecture and as a major and very important source for the laying out of gardens, parks and estates. Few of the engravings represent maps and 4 of the parts (III, IV and VII -2 parts-) are preceded by a beautiful engraved front. Title and all engravings are accompanied by captives in Dutch and in French. Our copy has an extra: the second volume contains 2 extra, loose maps: 1 plan of an area in city of Amsterdam and 1 map of `Het Watergraafs- of Diemer-Meer', a water just outside of Amsterdam.
