(2), 543, (1) pp. Rare third edition - in fact a page-for-page reprint of the second edition, published in 1634 by the same publisher, also in the charming oblong 16mo format - of the first collection of poems in Dutch, Latin, French and Italian, of one of the three most famous poets of the Dutch Golden Age, Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), the lifelong secretary of the stadtholders, the princes of Orange Frederick Henry, and Willem II and father of the perhaps even more famous physicist Christiaan Huygens. Huygens is often considered a member of what is known as the Muiderkring, a group of leading intellectuals gathered around Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, who met regularly at the castle of Muiden near Amsterdam. Huygens is arguably one of the most prolific poets of the Dutch Golden Age and one of the last 'huomo universale'. As a man of his era, Huygens played also a large number of instruments (lute, gamba, harpsichord ) for which he wrote a large number of musical pieces. Near The Hague in the neighboring town Voorburg, Huygens built a small villa, called Hofwijck ('Vitaulium' in Latin), meant as a get-away from the Court in The Hague.The first edition of the <I>Otia</I>, or <I>Ledige uyren</I>, was published in 1625 in The Hague in 4to by Arn. Meursius. Apart from some occasional poems from his youth published in different collections and the publication of his long poems ''t Costelick mal' and ''t Voorhout' in 1622. The <I>Otia</I> showcased his first 'collected poems', and marked the end of Constantijn's formative years, and the end of his youth. The work has been very influential for Dutch poetry of the later seventeenth century and is provided with laudatory poems by a.o. the two other great Dutch poets of the 17th century P.C.
