Exterior - soft bump to bottom of front board, light edgewear to boards with small areas of color loss at top/bottom of spine/corners , b o t t om corner of back board has area of water staining (roughly crescent shaped, approx. 1/4" wide, running 1 3/4" along bottom edge and 1" up side) which migrates very slightly to bottom corner of rear pastedown and with very tiny stains to bo t to m co rn er of last four leaves. En relation étroite avec le cercle des Encyclopédistes, conseiller de Catherine II en matière déducation et directeur des Bâtiments impériaux, Ivan Betzky composa ce vaste plan de réformes de léducation et de l'enseignement en Russie. Dinspiration philanthropique, il envisage aussi bien les aspects théoriques, pratiques, que matériels (architecture) et s'étend à toutes les classes de la population. Louvrage contient une large introduction et des « Réflexions sur lEducation des Demoiselles » par le traducteur Nicolas Gabriel Le Clerc. Diderot, dont linfluence se fait ressentir tout au long de cet ouvrage, avait été enthousiasmé par le projet. Il supervisa la traduction française et y ajouta des commentaires ; une lettre élogieuse de sa composition clos le dernier volume (cf. Herud on the half-title dated Oct., 1859, with his annotations throughout. First edition of probably the best-known medical book in the English language. "Gray's treatise was distinguished for the lucid and logical arrangement of a mass of detailed descriptions; clear new drawings based on dissections by the surgeon-author and the artist; and sections on the surgical anatomy of defined areas, such as the axilla, the elbow, the popliteal space, the perineum, and the laryngotracheal region" (Lilly Library, Notable Medical Books, 211).Gray (1827-61), a celebrated English physician, was chiefly engaged in anatomical research and teaching at St. George's Hospital in London. This work has become quite scarce in a first edition.

With folding engraved map of The Netherlands by A. van Krevelt, finely coloured by hand, large folding etched plate of a sea-battle by K.P. Bendorp, two extra added portraits of Oldebarneveld and Hugo de Groot, and 274 full-page engraved plates and portraits by R. Vinkeles and C. Bogaers after designs by J. Buys. Each vol. ca. 250 pp. Rare complete set of an extensive children's national history book, nicely illustrated with historical plates and portraits, designed by Jacobus Buys (1724-1801), pupil of C. Pronk, and easily the most prominent of the Dutch book illustrators of the second half of the 18th century. He also made the famous print-series for Van Alphen's children's poems, for Elisabeth Wolff's "Economische Liedjes", etc. The present children's history series was started by Jacobus Kok (1734-1788), an Amsterdam bookseller and enthusiastic historian, and finished by Jan Fokke (1745-1812), historian and brother of the Amsterdam bookseller, publisher and popular author Arend Fokke. The present children's history probably ran parallel to Kok's "Vaderlandsch Woordenboek", which was also finished by Jan Fokke, and which by the way was also illustrated with engraved plates after designs of Jacobus Buys. The present work has 12 plates each in the first 17 volumes, except for volume 2 with 10 engraved plates, and with two extra portraits added in volume 7, circular stipple-engraved portraits of Oldebarneveld and Hugo de Groot, in quite a different style and technique. The volumes 18 to 24 then have 10 engraved portraits and plates each, and the last volume, which also contains the index, has 2 plates. The folding map of The Netherlands, here nicely coloured by hand, is called for in the first volume, but the fine large etched view of a sea-battle between the Dutch admirals Kinsbergen and Zoutman and the English admiral Parker, present in volume 14, is extra and rarely found. The Dutch history itself is attractively told in the form of a dialogue between a father and his son, and consists of 114 conversations in total. An extensive general index is present at the end. Complete, the work is very rare. Fine set, uniformly bound in gilt half calf except for one volume in boards. <I>Cat. Van Rijn</I> 387 (ascribed to the publisher J. First edition of a popular pictorial Dutch history book, published as a result of the great succes of Van Lennep's series with stories from Dutch history told to his children. Not only the children but also the general public was so delighted by Van Lennep's stories that the well-known Amsterdam firm of printers and publishers of lithographs, Binger & Sons, decided to produce a lithographed album devoted to these stories, designed and produced by all the most popular artists of the day. The work was published in parts, and it took six years to be completed. The plates depict in large Romantic tinted lithographs Dutch history from the beginning to contemporary times, with the number of the plate, the title, and a four-line verse printed in a large type on the facing pages of the accompabying text-leaves, and the historical event more extensively told and explained in prose, printed in a small type on verso. Most plates were designed in about the same Romantic style, fashionable at the time, but made by a large number of artists, so individual differences are seen as well, which much enlivens the work.
