LES VRAIS ET LES FAUX SECRETS DU PENTAGONE "The True and False Secrets of the Pentagon"
Hanoi: Le Courrier du Viet Nam 1971. First Edition. Very good. Scarce North Vietnam propoganda published in the wake of the release of the Pentagon Papers. Coming the same year as Daniel Ellsberg's leak which was published in June of that year this represents an early and possible first official response to the revelations contained therein. From the introduction: "It is repugnant for honest people to believe that the government of a country with the reputation of the United States had for many years premeditated prepared and planned down to the most minute details a systematic aggression a criminal war of genocide against a small people a tiny country situated more than 10000 kilometers from America's frontiers; to think that this government for many years has deliberately and knowingly lied to cover up the crime to hide its plans and deceive the American people the US Congress and America's allies as well as its friends and supporters throughout the world" translated from the French. The nine-page introduction is followed by a "documents" section the bulk of the book which in addition to excerpts from the Pentagon Papers also contains Presidential speeches Kennedy Johnson interspersed with North Vietnamese statements and commentary. Though OCLC some two dozen copies worldwide only four of those are in the US Harvard Yale Cornell and Columbia with none currently in trade as of April 2017. A significant and uncommon work of Communist propoganda from the height of the Cold War and the Vietnam conflict. Wraps. Small 8vo. Original wraps. Covers a little worn with some soil. Slight lean. Toning overall. Still sound. Very good. Text in French. 138pp. Le Courrier du Viet Nam paperback

[Vietnam War]
PHOTOGRAPHS OF AN OFFICER’S INTERACTIONS WITH VIETNAMESE HILL TRIBES 1969-70
Fascinating album concerning an officer's dealings with the hill tribes in the mountains around Vietnam the Montagnards an umbrella term coined by the French for the indigenous mountain people. Quarto three-ring binder. It contains 85 black and white photographs and 20 color photographs of Lt. Col. Frank F. Shelby in his interactions with the Montagnards and with his own unit. Binder and photographs both in very good condition.

Shelby b.1929 grew up in Lexington Missouri. He joined the army in time to serve in the Korean War where he was with the 5th Regimental Combat Team. It was in Korea that he met his wife Jean who was also in the Army serving in the Women's Army Corps. He eventually ended up in Vietnam and was assigned to the U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam MACV a joint-service command of the United States Department of Defense. It was first implemented to assist the Military Assistance Advisory Group MAAG Vietnam controlling every advisory and assistance effort in Vietnam but was reorganized on May 15 1964 and absorbed MAAG Vietnam to its command when combat unit deployment became too large for advisory group control. He and Jean retired in 1973 and soon opened a Sambo's restaurant in the Cordova Mall in Pensacola.

The Monochrome photographs are generally 5 ½†x 3 ½†except for about five 8†x 10†and document Shelby’s military service in 1969-70. He seems to have been a liaison of sorts with the Montagnard troops fighting with the Americans. But unlike other war albums his seemed to be a mission of coercion and diplomacy. There are no vivid photographs of napalm burning or helicopters crashing. Rather almost the whole album shows him relating to the Montagnards. He visited many Montagnard encampments distributing food and resources smoking ceremonial pipe with the elders arranging concerts etc. Much of the album are photographs portraits of solitary Montagnards.

Also includes a printed multicolor "Giay Thong-Hanh" pass. It states "Safe-conduct pass to be honored by all Vietnamese Government agencies and allied forces" and consists of a yellow slip with lettering in English and Vietnamese bearing images of the flags of all the allied troops. In the margin Shelby has written "These are passed out in Villages and dropped from planes. All part of the PSYOP program. unknown

The Vietnam War 1954-1975 is considered the first "living room war" due to its daily appearance on television and in the press. The majority of these photos are from late 1967 and early 1968 on location in Hue Nui Dat an Australian base now a part of Ba Ria Saigon and Long Binh/Bien Hoa outside Ho Chi Minh. Multiple images refer to Operation Coburg an Australian and New Zealand military action against the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong over the Lunar New Year festivities of 1968. It was the first time the Australian Task Force was deployed beyond its Tactical Area of Responsibility which set a precedent for later operations that extended beyond the assigned province of Phuoc Tuy. hardcover

African American Troops, Vietnam War
Multiracial Unit in the Vietnam War Photo Archive 1970-71
African American Troops in Vietnam War Archive of 68 color Polaroid photos of tightly knit multiracial U.S. Army Unit stationed in Vietnam in 1970-71 with many being African American. Photos measure 3.5" x 3.5" - 3.5" x 4.5". About a quarter of the images are pasted to black board with the rest being loose. Some the loose photos with handwritten captions and soldiers' names en verso. This album was assembled by Sergeant Vandergriff and documents his 1970-71 tour duty spanning from basic training to 5 days before his homecoming. The troops are seen smoking drinking and brandishing their weapons standard M16 rifles and M1911 sidearms. The unit seems tightly knit with friendships transcending skin color. The Vietnam War was the first American war in which African American and white troops were not segregated. Photos include multiple aerial shots from inside a helicopter and one shows a grounded destroyed helicopter. Other photos depict aircraft drill marches tanks weaponry villages and locals including two Vietnamese children bathing in a river. It is not clear which unit these troops belong to. It is possible they are in the 101st Airborne which was prominent at both Birmingham and Evans. During the Vietnam War African American soldiers made up almost 25% of all troops and comprised 40-60% of airborne units which seems to be reflected in this archive. Some photos have degradation or stains affecting the image; overall in very good condition and documents the experience of a soldier in multiracial U.S. Army. unknown

Counterculture Vietnam War Four early anti–Vietnam War documents issued in 1965–66 capturing a transitional moment in the American peace movement—when dissent was still coalescing and protest was emerging through targeted civil disobedience tax resistance and moral appeals from within the military itself. Produced by a range of actors including the Student Peace Union SANE Women Strike for Peace and Contra Costa Citizens Against the War in Vietnam the items here reflect the movement’s early evolution from elite petitioning to direct action and grassroots confrontation. Includes:

1 A two-page mimeographed circular issued by the Student Peace Union titled United States Marines Speak Out dated April 30 1966. It reproduces letters from two anonymous Marines stationed in Chu Lai South Vietnam both expressing moral opposition to the war while still on active duty. The first writes: “I feel this war is a waste of time people and money… the people over here don’t care who they get food from or what supplies they need.†Describing a village where locals were caught placing glass in ice cubes and acid in Coke given to Marines he adds “I feel that these people don’t deserve and aren’t worth the trouble they are causing.†The second letter reflects broader disillusionment: “I believe in serving my obligation as a Marine… but this was such a hollow political cold war… I’ve brought comfort and ‘freedom’ not because I possess it but because I possess the all-powerful American Dollar.†He pleads for a shift in U.S. priorities: “Let us help these people with kindness not death.†The SPU notes that the names have been withheld for safety but that one Marine was made an honorary member of the organization after requesting to join.

2 A green flyer titled Port Chicago’s Where the Action Is announces a day of coordinated protest and civil disobedience on Sunday August 7 organized by Contra Costa Citizens Against the War in Vietnam. The leaflet targets the U.S. Naval Weapons Station at Port Chicago described as supplying “over 90% of the ammunition and explosives used by American forces in the Vietnam War.†Protestors are instructed to rally at Concord City Park then march to the munitions gate with a final call for those “prepared to risk arrest†to begin a vigil intended to block shipments. The language is unflinching: “WHERE napalm trucks double-section explosives trucks trainloads of bombs… are loaded onto ships bound for Vietnam… WHERE day and night countless human lives stacked routinely in the holds of ship after ship are processed for oblivion.†The bottom slogan reads: “One man / One truck / A thousand lives.â€

3 A broadside reproduces a full-page advertisement originally printed in The New York Times on February 19 1965 by the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy SANE headlined: “Vietnam: America must decide between a full scale war and a negotiated truce.†It warns: “A spiraling exchange of blows and counterblows in Vietnam can lead to a major war involving the U.S. and China—a war nobody wants and no one can win.†Signatories include Dr. Benjamin Spock Linus Pauling Norman Mailer I.F. Stone and over 100 other clergy labor leaders writers and academics. The statement urges U.S. citizens to demand an immediate ceasefire and negotiated withdrawal: “No issues will be decided by prolonging the bloody and fratricidal conflict in South Vietnam.†A detachable section at the bottom calls on the public to contact Congress and the White House aligning elite opinion with public mobilization.

4 A double-sided broadside combines two distinct appeals: one from Women Strike for Peace and the other from Senator J. William Fulbright. On the recto the flyer is titled “Unhappy About High Food Prices†and draws an explicit connection between domestic inflation and military spending. “The war in Vietnam is costing over one million dollars each hour… and going up up up.†A pie chart starkly illustrates that “3/4 of your tax dollar is spent for military and space purposes†while only “1/4 is left for everything else.†A “Ballot on the War Budget†at the bottom encourages citizens to send a protest to their senators: “I object. I don’t want all that spending for death and destruction.†On the verso is an abridged version of Senator Fulbright’s October 14 1965 address at Kansas State College in which he asks: “Do we want our country to be the world’s policeman or an intelligent and humane society whose principal contribution to the outside world has been the power of its example†Fulbright laments the transformation of the 89th Congress into a “war Congress†noting: “We are requiring the poor and the schoolchildren of America to pay the cost… while its cities are wracked by violence its streets choked with traffic its rivers open sewers and its air unfit to breathe.â€

Together these four documents provide a deeply textured view of antiwar organizing in its formative years—before mass demonstrations had defined the movement. Their diversity of voices—from enlisted servicemen to Nobel laureates California organizers to U.S. Senators—reveals a consensus beginning to form against escalation. This archive is a rare and important record of early resistance balancing policy critique economic urgency and moral clarity. unknown

Antiwar, Vietnam War
Pair of Mimeographed Documents Contrasting Johnson's 1964 and Nixon's 1969 Vietnam War Policies with Viet Cong Peace Terms
Counterculture Vietnam War This pair of mimeographed documents issued in 1964 and 1969 respectively capture the shifting rhetorical and political frameworks of U.S. justification and policy aims in Vietnam offering rare comparative insight into both the Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon administrations’ public positions. 1 Some Questions on Vietnam. Washington: Friends Committee on National Legislation June 3 1964. 2 Mr. Nixon's Points. N.p October 14 1969. Two double-sided mimeographed typescripts measuring 8.5" x 11" each. Together they trace the continuity and contradictions in American official thinking from the earliest stages of direct military intervention to the early attempts at managed withdrawal. The 1969 document is particularly notable for its side-by-side presentation of Nixon’s proposed peace terms with those of the National Liberation Front NLF the political wing of the Viet Cong.
1 The first document dated June 3 1964 and issued by the Friends Committee on National Legislation in Washington D.C. is titled Some Questions on Vietnam. Framed as a briefing tool for concerned citizens it outlines the U.S. position in the early escalation phase of the war and provides extensive excerpts from contemporary sources including President Johnson’s June 2 press conference and articles from The Washington Post and New York Times. Johnson is quoted stating that the U.S. is “bound by solemn commitments to help defend this area against Communist encroachment†reaffirming the domino theory logic underpinning American involvement.

The handout catalogs U.S. military strategies then being deployed including the “Strategic Hamlet Program†in which “thousands of peasants were uprooted at gunpoint and moved into defensive village-clusters far removed from ancestral lands.†Other methods included the use of lie detectors on suspected Viet Cong and defoliation tactics that the Washington Post acknowledged raised “questions of the wisdom of using such agents at all in this kind of war… where the consequences are visited upon a civilian population we are trying to defend.†The leaflet also raises doubt about South Vietnamese support for the war: “the Saigon government has the allegiance of probably no more than 30 per cent of the people.†Statistics from the Pentagon note that by May 25 1964 1130 American servicemen had been killed wounded or listed as missing since 1961. Senator Wayne Morse is quoted: “We have already poured into that sink-hole over $5½ billion.†The final sections argue that economic aid cannot be separated from military goals and propose alternatives such as United Nations mediation. Notably the sheet warns that mail to the White House on Vietnam had been averaging fewer than 150 letters per week urging citizens to “make their views known to the President and your Congressmen.â€

2 The second document dated October 14 1969 presents President Nixon’s public negotiating stance during the early phase of his “Vietnamization†strategy. Titled Mr. Nixon’s 8 Points the yellow sheet begins with a justification of U.S. sacrifices: “The United States has suffered over a million casualties in four wars in this century… We are proud of this record and we bring the same attitude in our search for a settlement in Vietnam.†Nixon outlines eight specific principles most notably: “We seek no bases in Vietnam. We insist on no military ties. We are willing to agree to neutrality for South Vietnam if that is what the South Vietnamese people freely choose.†He continues “We have no intention of imposing any form of government upon the people of South Vietnam nor will we be a party to such coercion.†The points include phased withdrawal over twelve months the establishment of an international supervisory body elections under international supervision release of prisoners of war and mutual agreement to observe the 1954 Geneva Accords. Nixon concludes with a reaffirmation that U.S. presence would end entirely once these measures were fulfilled.

The reverse of the Nixon flyer contains The NLF’s 10 Points the Viet Cong’s counter-position which sharply contradicts Nixon’s framing. Point 2 is categorical: “The U.S. Government must withdraw from South Vietnam all U.S. troops military personnel arms and war materiel… and liquidate all U.S. military bases in South Vietnam.†Point 4 emphasizes sovereignty: “The people of South Vietnam shall settle themselves their own affairs without foreign interference.†Throughout the NLF stresses full political participation neutral diplomatic relations and reunification of Vietnam as “a peaceful process… without foreign interference.†Notably Point 9 demands that the U.S. government “must bear full responsibility for the losses and devastations it has caused to the Vietnamese people in both zones.â€

Juxtaposing these two documents reveals a significant divergence between U.S. public rhetoric and Vietnamese revolutionary demands. While Nixon framed U.S. intentions as altruistic and limited the NLF viewed the war as colonial in nature and demanded unconditional withdrawal. This side-by-side format would have been a powerful tool for peace activists and educators in 1969 especially as public trust in government narratives about Vietnam eroded in the wake of the Tet Offensive and ongoing domestic protest. Very good condition overall. unknown
