ALDROVANDI, ULISSE.
OPERA. BOLOGNA, 1599-1667.
13 volumes. Folio (350 x 240mm). Contemporary blindstamped vellum, spine with 5 raised bands and black morocco gilt stamped title label. Each volume with engraved title, engraved full page portrait of Aldrovandi in 3 volumes and several thousand woodcut illustrations in text, mostly after designs by J. Ligozzi and many full-page. First editions throughout of the complete Opera of Aldrovandi. Aldrovandi (1522-1605) was an Italian botanist, pharmacologist and a professor of botany on the university of Bologna. This massive encyclopaedia was based on specimens and drawings of all kind of different objects concerning natural history in Aldrovandi's own museum in Bologna, the first institutional herbarium. Aldrovandi was inspired to study natural history by meeting Guillaume Rondelet in Rome, where Aldrovandi was obliged to go to defend himself against charges of heresy. Rondelet was then gathering material for his work on fishes. Aldrovandi, who accompanied the French physician to fish markets in order to study the various species, finally decided to study natural history, and began collecting specimens for his own museum. Aldrovandi was the author of several encyclopaedic works on natural history, the Opera being his most extensive work and also the largest collection of natural history illustrations published before the 18th century. Many of the illustrations in these 13 volumes were the work of Jacopo Ligozzi. The original drawings are still in Bologna and have been made available online. The Aldrovandi herbarium was the biggest of the 16th century herbaria and gives the most complete picture of the plant world as known at the time in Italy. In 1796 the French revolutionary armies confiscated the herbarium and sent it to Paris with the 18 volumes of drawings. The collection was returned to the Bologna university library in 1815. In 1875 it was sent to the botanic garden, today it is again at the university. (Stafleu and Cowan, Taxonomic literature ed. 2, pp. 28-9). The first 3 volumes are devoted to birds. These volumes are very special because they contain the first illustrations of a lot of species, in particular tropical birds such as toucans and birds of paradise. The 4th and 5th volumes are about two-horned and other quadrupeds, such as zebras, horses, elephants, centaurs and unicorns. In the 6th volume quadrupeds such as dogs, bears, cats and rodents are discussed and the 7th volume is on serpents and dragons. In the 8th volume fishes, dolphins and whales are the subject of research while the 9th is on insects. The 10th volume, on molluscs, crustacea, and zoophytes, is remarkable because it's one of the earliest works devoted almost entirely to shells. The 11th volume, Musaeum metallicum, is an extensive catalogue with numerous illustrations of all kinds of artefacts from Aldrovandi's museum, such as minerals, crystals, fossils, stone objects, antique vases and so on. Volume 12 is a.o. on trees and seeds. The final, 13th, volume is an encyclopaedic study of monsters and monstrosities such as human and animal deformities and also celestial prodigies. Other objects which are discussed are fetal development and deformity and monsters of antiquity. This volume is the earliest and the most exhuberant illustrated work published on this subject which also contains an appendix (the Paralipomena) by Bartolomei Ambrosini, Aldrovandi's successor as director of the Bologna botanic gardens. Good copies. Adams, Vol. 1, 647; Catalogue of the British Museum (Natural History) I, pp. 26-27; Nissen, BBI 14; Nissen, IVB 18; Nissen, ZBI 66, 68, 70, 72, 74-78; Stafleu & Cowan, Taxonomic literature, ed. 2, pp. 28-29; Wood pp. 184-185.
