Al titolo, riproduzione del recto e del verso della medaglia coniata per celebrare la Sesta Riunione degli Scienziati Italiani. 4 tavv. f.t., di cui le prime due in b.n. con raffigurazioni di piante e le restanti due, ripiegate e a colori, sono costituite rispettivamente da una carta geologica della Corsica e da una raffigurazione di quattro spaccati geologici corsi. Bellissimo esemplare. Edizione originale. Il volume raccoglie tutti gli interventi tenuti durante la Sesta Riunione degli Scienziati Italiani in merito a fisica, matematica, chimica, agronomia, tecnologia, zoologia, anatomia comparata, fisiologia, botanica e fisiologia vegetale, mineralogia, geologia, geografia, medicina, chirurgia; gli interventi comprendono talora riferimenti ad ambiti regionali italiani. Indice delle materie e degli autori citati in fine. Fra gli autori dei testi figurano illustri scienziati come Tardy, Magrini, De Cristoforis, Pareto, Balardini, Angeloni, ecc.

In-4 (350x265mm), pp. (8), 503, (4), superba legatura editoriale in m. pelle con punte, piatti cartonati con illustrazione a motivi floreali e fitomorfi policromi e dorati ai piatti. Titolo e decori vegetali in oro al dorso. Tagli dorati. Sguardie decorate a motivo a piuma di pavone. Centinaia di incisioni xilografiche f.t. ed intercalate n.t. disegnate dall'autore. Frontespizio in rosso e nero con piccola vignetta. Qualche normale fioritura. Bellissimo esemplare. Edizione originale, non comune, di questo resoconto di viaggio ottocentesco nelle Baleari, in Corsica ed in Sardegna, "isole dimenticate" in quanto in gran parte trascurate dal turismo dell'epoca. L'opera e' ricca di notazioni geografiche ed etnografiche relative alle terre visitate. Il Vuillier (Perpignan, 1845-Gimel, 1915), pittore e disegnatore, intraprese gli studi artistici nella citta' natale. Allievo di Emmanuel Lansyer, raggiunse la notorieta' nel 1878, esponendo i suoi quadri a Parigi. Svolse un'intensa attivita' di pubblicista, collaborando all'illustrazione di numerose pubblicazioni periodiche e, a partire dal 1888, viaggio' nelle isole del Mediterraneo occidentale, visitando l'arcipelago delle Eolie nel giugno 1893. Riporto' le sue impressioni nella presente opera e ne La Sicile: impressions du present et du passe', apparso nel 1896. (5), VI-XXI, (3), 382 pp. First edition of this delightful travel book by James Boswell (1740-1795), today mainly known as the friend and biographer of Samuel Johnson. The work was so popular that three more editions appeared during that same year (1768). The book is divided in two parts, the first giving a detailed description and history of Corsica, and the second containing a journal of Boswell's voyage to the island. It was especially this latter part which excited the public, being a lively account of Boswell's quixotic adventures in Corsica and his association with General Paoli. Pascal Paoli was a Corsican patriot, who in 1755 succeeded in liberating the island from Genoese oppression and was chosen president under a republican constitution. In 1769, however, his troops were defeated by the French, and he had to flee to England. Boswell brought Paoli to London, introduced him to the circle of Samuel Johnson, and succeeded in getting official British support for the island's struggle to become an independent nation. With the help of Admiral Hood, the French were defeated in 1794, but after only two years of British reign the French took over again, with Corsica coming under jurisdiction of Napoleon Bonaparte. Boswell enjoyed his role as promoter of Corsica's interests so much that he appeared in Corsican costume at Garrick's anniversary party in honour of Shakespeare in Stratford-on-Avon in 1769. Johnson said about Boswell's book: "Your History is like other histories, but your Journal is in a very high degree curious and delightful". The large folding map, newly made for Boswell's account by his servant Thomas Phinn and dated 1768, is one of the rare maps solely devoted to the island. The book was translated within a few years into Dutch, German, French, and Italian. Good copy with armorial bookplate of Benjamin Hartley Foote.- (Rebacked, small tear in map).
