Rare Broadsheet Advertising His Lectures.

New York: [circa 1920s]. - Broadsheet, 11 inches high by 8 inches wide, printed in black on creamy paper, with the heading & a portrait on the recto and information about the author and his lectures filling the verso. The edges of the broadsheet are chipped & there are short tears & small pieces out where 3 holes have been punched in the left margin. There is a light stain to the bottom edge. Very good. Canadian Harold Peat, who became well-known as "Private Peat", served in the First Canadian Infantry in World War I. After two years he went home wounded, having seen the full horrors of war, including the first use of gas against the allied troops. From 1918, he devoted himself to fighting what he called "The Inexcusable Lie"--the glorification of war. In Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, he eloquently promoted the cause of peace: "Let us elevate the pursuits of Peace, put bundles of fight into its varying elements, make it thrilling, make it heroic....Your boy and mine will want peace when we have been able to interpret peace to make it at least as interesting as war, at least as heroic, and as dramatic."This broadsheet, put out by the Pond Bureau, advertises Peat's lectures. On the recto is an attractive portrait of Peat, dressed rather like a dashing private eye, in a tilted hat with the brim shading his eyes and a coat with the collar turned up. Below is the caption: "Private Peat / In his stirring talk on Peace vs War / 'The Inexcusable Lie'." The copy on the verso gives some biographical information and enlarges on the theme of Peat's lectures.Rare.
