‎Relation inédite d'un voyage aux Pays Bas et en Angleterre effectué par un jeune officier parti d'Alès le 5 avril 1716, le capitaine d'infanterie François Giberne de Gibertain, qui passa par Paris afin d'obtenir du président du Conseil de la guerre le Maréchal de Villars, l'autorisation nécessaire à la sortie du royaume.« Le 15 (mai 1716) j'avais demandé à M. le Maréchal de Villars un congé pour aller en Angleterre en lui montrant le certificat de M. de Barville. Il me répondit d'abord que ce certificat suffisait, un moment après il changea et me dit qu'il en parlerait à M. le Régent. S'il m'arrivait quelque chose en pays étranger, la cour pourrait trouver mauvaise ma sortie, je pus consulter le Marquis de La Fare qui approuva mon opinion et s'offrit d'en parler à Mr. le Régent qui décida sur le champ que tout officier qui sortait du Royaume sans congé ou permission du Roi perdait son emploi du jour de sa sortie et qu'il me fallait prendre un congé du Conseil de la guerre qui me serait expédié par l'ordre de M. le Maréchal de Villars, M. de La Fare m'ayant porté cette réponse et donné fort bien à dîner et en bonne compagnie. »Chargé par le marquis de La Fare de rapporter du thé au Régent, c'est un véritable voyage d’études qu'entreprend notre officier depuis les Cévennes, qu'il va scrupuleusement renseigner à chaque étape : itinéraire détaillé jusqu'à Londres (grandes étapes : Lyon, Paris, Valenciennes, Bruxelles « capitale du Brabant et des Pays Bas autrichiens », La Haye où il dîne chez l'ambassadeur M. de Chateauneuf), les tableaux des recettes de diligence, les lettres de changes, les billets d'état, les relais de poste etc. Amsterdam et Londres occupent la plus grande partie de son récit : observations sur les prix, les moeurs et coutumes, le vocabulaire des endroits visités, les événements, les monnaies, les billets de loterie, la banque, l'architecture, la Compagnie des Indes, etc. Gibertain offre un panorama inédit de la capitale hollandaise et du formidable essor économique que connaît le pays depuis qu’il a conquis son indépendance, et de Londres sous le règne de George Ier roi de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande depuis le 1er août 1714 (Voltaire s’installa dans la capitale anglaise en 1726, dix ans plus tard). Gilbertain quitte Londres le 8 juillet 1717 et rentre en France avec un regard neuf sur l'état du royaume : « Il me parut que les provinces par où je revins de Paris sont bien pauvres. On trouve quantité de villages où plusieurs maisons sont désertes d'autres brûlées ou découvertes, et en ayant demandé la raison en plusieurs endroits on me répondit que c'était des gens que la misère avait chassés en d'autres pays, ne pouvant payer les charges. Les paysans d'Angleterre sont bien autrement vêtus et chaussés ». Il est de retour à Alès le dimanche 3 octobre 1717. L'ancien capitaine d'infanterie et chevalier de Saint-Louis François Giberne de Gibertain (†1762) fut inspecteur des chemins du diocèse d'Alès, et à ce titre une figure importante de la capitale des Cévennes quand il fut chargé en 1751 d'établir un devis pour le chemin d'Auvergne « depuis Alais jusqu'à La Salvetat en passant par le Gévaudan. C’est sous la Régence que l’ouverture d’un chemin de grande communication reliant Clermont à Montpellier et passant par Le Puy et Alès avait été projetée. Si les travaux avancèrent rapidement dans le secteur auvergnat, il n’en fut pas de même en Languedoc en raison des rivalités opposant le Vivarais et le Gévaudan. A la suite des visites faites en 1724 et 1727, l’ingénieur Clapiès opta pour l’itinéraire le plus direct, c’est à dire celui passant par Le Puy, Langogne, Villefort et Alès, itinéraire connu sous le nom de chemin de Régordane. Le Vivarais refusa de financer une route qui pour lui serait sans utilité et proposa un nouvel itinéraire passant par Mayres. C’est cet itinéraire qui sera finalement adopté en 1759. Bien entendu le trajet de cette nouvelle route avait eu ses partisans mais aussi ses détracteurs et parmi eux Monsieur du Gibertain qui, le 15 novembre 1751, publia à Alès une enquête « faite durant le mois d’août tendant à démontrer que la route projetée Pradelles-Aubenas était impraticable six mois de l’année ». À cette fin, le sieur de Gibertain demanda au sieur Henri Toureille « juge de la Cour Royalle et Commune de Borne » de recueillir les témoignages des « sept habitants des lieux du Vivarais les plus à portée de la route projetée ». Ces témoins furent entendus le vendredi 18 août 1751 au lieu de l’Hermet Chabalier, paroisse de L’Espéron, et leur audition atteste que la rigueur du climat rendait dangereux les déplacements hivernaux et perturbait la vie sociale et économique » [Le lien des chercheurs Cévenols n°151 Octobre/Décembre 2007].Plats de la reliure griffonnés à l'encre du temps.‎
