(BINDINGS - CHARLOTTE ULLMAN). (PETER PAUPER PRESS). DICKENS, CHARLES
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Mount Vernon New York: Peter Pauper Press 1943. One of 1850 copies. 200 x 145 mm. 7 7/8 x 5 3/4". 119 1 pp.
Modern brown morocco by Charlotte M. Ullman stamp-signed on rear turn-in covers with multiple blind-rule border corners with blind-stamped holly sprig upper covers with three blind-tooled bells smooth spine titled in blind patterned endpapers. In a fleece-lined tan linen slipcase. Title vignette headpieces and several illustrations plus small printed busts of the characters printed in the margins throughout. Ransom p. 31. Spine evenly darkened front joint with just the beginnings of signs of wear otherwise a very fine copy.

This is a particularly pleasing copy of the Dickens' perennially popular classic Christmas story of the redemption of the cold-hearted miser Ebenezer Scrooge offered in an attractive and entirely suitable binding done by an important American female binder. Proclaimed by Eckels "the greatest Christmas book from the pen of any man" "A Christmas Carol" was a critical and commercial success of the highest order; the work is not only finely written but its sentiments had great appeal for Victorian taste. Founded in 1928 to publish accessible fine printings of classic works the Peter Pauper Press was run by husband-and-wife pair Peter and Edna Beilenson and was known for their low-cost but artistically respectable limited editions. The present publication with lively illustrations by artist and designer Fritz Kredel 1900-73 is an excellent example. Charlotte Ullman d. 1982 was for many years the head binder at the Pierpoint Morgan Library. She trained with Jacques Nosco and with Kathryn and Gerhard Gerlach; was an active member of the Guild of Book Workers which she joined in 1942; and won a Ford Foundation grant in 1963. In addition to the Morgan she worked with the Bibliothèque Nationale the Ecole Estienne and the British Museum. The present binding--with its simple but charming design incorporating Christmas bells and holly--is typical of Ullman's thoughtfully understated and always appropriate work examples of which are not commonly seen on the market. EVENINGS OF A WORKING MAN BEING THE OCCUPATION OF HIS SCANTY LEISURE
London: T. C. Newby 1844. FIRST EDITION. 170 x 102 mm. 6 3/4 x 4". 1 p.l. xiii 3 205 1 pp. 1 leaf ads.Preface by Charles Dickens.
VERY PLEASING GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY RIVIERE & SONS stamp-signed on front turn-in covers framed with gilt rules densely tooled cornerpieces with floral sprigs on a stippled ground raised bands spine panels lavishly gilt with a starburst of floral tools emanating from a central medallion all on a stippled ground gilt lettering turn-ins gilt ruled with floral garlands at the corners all edges gilt original tan cloth wrappers bound in at rear. Title page printed in blue and red. Eckel pp. 146-47; Podeschi B-121. Sheila M. Smith "John Overs to Charles Dickens: A Working-Man's Letter and Its Implications" Victorian Studies 18 no. 2 1974: 195–217. Spine just slightly sunned though hard to tell because of the heavy gilt a few trivial spots internally but A VERY FINE COPY in quite a pretty binding.

This attractively bound volume of a working class poet's verse and prose represents one of Dickens' charitable efforts in the spirit of social reform. A carpenter by trade John Overs 1808-44 had become acquainted with Dickens in 1839 when he submitted poetry for publication in "Bentley's Miscellany" then under Dickens' editorship. Over the next several years Dickens became a literary mentor and something of a friend to Overs providing writing advice lending books and helping Overs to secure a position at Drury Lane Theatre when his tuberculosis became too severe to continue his work as a carpenter. Literary scholar Sheila M. Smith has suggested that Overs may have served as an influence for "The Chimes" Dickens' penultimate Christmas book; she writes that Overs "was neither a political agitator nor a trade unionist. . . yet he was bitter and exulting in the idea of social revolution. A working man of this kind goaded to such feelings would have aroused Dickens's sympathy at a period when the novelist was experiencing his most violent indignation about his country's poor." To whatever degree that sympathy proved a literary inspiration for Dickens it directly led to the publication of the present work. When it was clear by the spring of 1844 that Overs would not survive his illness Dickens suggested to him that he publish a collection of his writings to help provide for his family after his passing. And so the present anthology was published only months before Overs' death on September 28 1844 with the proceeds from the book along with an additional charitable collection taken up by the publisher allowing his widow to make a living by opening a small milliner's shop. (BINDINGS - RIVIERE). [DICKENS, CHARLES]. "TIMOTHY SPARKS" (Pseudonym)
SUNDAY UNDER THREE HEADS
London: Chapman and Hall 1836. FIRST EDITION. 170 x 102 mm. 6 3/4 x 4". vi 49 1 pp.
VERY PLEASING GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY RIVIERE & SONS stamp-signed on front turn-in covers framed with gilt rules densely tooled cornerpieces with floral sprigs on a stippled ground raised bands spine panels lavishly gilt with a starburst of floral tools emanating from a central medallion all on a stippled ground gilt lettering turn-ins gilt ruled with floral garlands at the corners all edges gilt. Engraved title page and three engraved plates by H. K. Browne. Eckel pp. 102-03; Podeschi B-30. Spine slightly sunned internally with a few creased corners but in especially fine condition-clean and fresh in a very pleasing unworn binding.

This is an attractive copy of Dickens' little political pamphlet written in opposition to a bill being considered in Parliament that called for stricter Sunday observance. Dickens felt that fresh laws for more rigorous enforcement of restrained behavior were unfair to the poor because their six-day work week left only Sundays for leisure and he pleaded in the pamphlet for the encouragement of sabbath excursions and harmless amusements. The "three heads" symbolize Sunday "As It Is As Sabbath Bills Would Make It and As It Might Be Made." Longtime Dickens collaborator H. K. Browne "Phiz" has provided three scenes imagining the day of rest in each of these situations. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829 then set up shop as in London in 1840; in 1881 he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son. The bindery continued to do business until 1939 when it was acquired by George Bayntun of Bath. Rivere's work has consistently been of the highest standard throughout its long years of operation and the present work is no exception. Chapman and Hall unknown

Frontispiece portrait engraved vignette title and 12 plates as called for by S. L. Fildes EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with reproductions of a black & white portrait of Fildes and an engraved portrait of John Forster both taken from contemporary publications a reduced reproduction of the original green paper wrapper cover all three of these mounted in heavy stock frames additional calligraphed title page noting extra-illustrations 16 ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONS FOUR OF THESE WATERCOLORS 13 dry-point all but one mounted in heavy stock frames one drawn directly on heavy stock all captioned and all with tissue guards. Front flyleaf with embossed ex-libris of Dana C. Bradford. With "The Last Book" a seven-page excerpt from Forster's "Life of Dickens" mounted in frames at rear following a handwritten section title page. â—†Slight rippling of some of the inserted leaves text faintly yellowed because of paper stock as no doubt in all copies perhaps a whisper of wear to the binding but still and easily a very fine copy.

In terms of content illustration binding and condition this item is obviously of very considerable appeal. Dickens' final unfinished novel "Edwin Drood" is a murder mystery that remains unsolved to this day. Set in a lightly fictionalized version of Rochester near which Dickens was living the plot involves a marriage engagement between the two orphans Drood and Rosa Budd made by their parents and distasteful to both of them. When Drood disappears suspicion falls heavily on Neville another orphaned young man who is in love with Rosa. Neville has the reader's sympathy and we can only hope that Drood's sinister and scheming uncle Jasper is the culprit. A distinguished artist who did many famous portraits in his later years Samuel Luke Fildes 1844-1927 began as an illustrator known especially for powerful black and white images of social realism; his career was measurably advanced by his selection as the artist to execute the plates in "Edwin Drood." Cedric Chivers opened his Bath bindery in the 1880s producing various kinds of fine decorative bindings but specializing in a "vellucent" binding based on the 18th century painted vellum work of Edwards of Halifax. Here he has used the vellucent technique to create the shields with the arms of Rochester and Kent inlaid on the cover and spine. The anonymous watercolors here are extremely attractive being skillfully done in pleasing colors. They are mostly depictions of the novel's localities generally in Rochester. Chapman and Hall unknown

London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. 1848. Good. FIRST EDITION WITH ALL BUT ONE OF THE FIRST ISSUE POINTS - Octavo 8-1/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Three-quarter tan calf & marbled boards with gilt elaborate decorations in gilt and raised bands on the spine as well as a gilt titled red leather label. The covers are rubbed and slightly scuffed with minor wear to the edges and corners. All edges are marbled. xvi ii & 624 pages plus an errata slip illustrated with 40 plates by Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" including a frontispiece and an additional pictorial title page. A couple of signatures i.e. group of pages are lightly pulled. There is scattered foxing particularly in the margins of the plates. Good.
"First edition with all but one of the first issue points. The first issue points present in this copy of the book are as follows: a The errata leaf following page xvi has 2 lines; an inserted errata slip has 12 lins. b The title vignette and the illustration following page 238 erroneously have Capt. Cuttle's hook on his left arm; c On the "List of Plates" on page xv the frontis and the title vignette have no page entry; d Further on page xv line 2 there are no quotation marks around the words "the party"; e Ten lines up from the bottom on page 14 there is no apostrophe in the word "aint"; f On page 26 line 11 the word "fidgety" is mis-spelled "fidgetty"; g On page 40 lines 16-17 the words "shewed' and "shew" are printed for "showed" and "show"; h On page 284 five and six lines up from the bottom the word "Delight" replaces the word "Joy"; i On page 324 in the last line the word "Captain" is mis-spelled "Capatin"; j On page 426 line 9 the word "if" is not present; k On page 582 the last line lacks a period. The only later issue point we have been able to determine is that the page number "431" is present on that page.
The "dark plate" by Phiz "On the Dark Road" is in superb condition with minor foxing in the margins. "According to Valerie Lester Browne this was Phiz's first attempt at a classic 'dark plate' in this case to show the futility of the villainous Carker's trying to cheat death as he makes his way through France to Paris and thence to England. If he cannot escape Dombey on the Continent where he fears Dombey can easily hire assassins he rationalizes that it would be better to confront Dombey in a country less lawless. The March 1848 illustration moreover engages the viewer with the sharpness and vivacity of the figures and the prancing horses horses having been from his earliest compositions one of Phiz's strengths." - quoted from The Victorian Web. THE HOUSEHOLD NARRATIVE OF CURRENT EVENTS 1850â€1855
London: Uncredited publisher 1855. First - Bound from parts. Near Fine. ″The Household Narrative of Current Events was a twopenny monthly retrospect of national international news and other information published from April 1850 to December 1855 including numbers for January †March 1850 … It aimed to extend the scope of the main journal in new directions making the suite of publications a complete cheap and widely available compendium to the life of the times
An advertisement for the Narrative called it 'a complete and carefullyâ€digested ANNUAL REGISTER′ indicating Dickens′s hope that in its bound volume form it would emulate Burke and Dodsley′s famous Annual Register … of History Politicks and Literature which he himself found so useful as a reference work for his journalism and historical fiction Dickens′s frontâ€page announcement of the new venture reminded readers of 'the intimate connexion between the facts and realities of the time and the means by which we aim in Household Words to soften what is hard in them to exalt what is held in little consideration and to show the latent hope there is in what may seem unpromising′ The Narrative would thereby be another means 'to bear the world′s rough cast events to the anvil of courageous duty and there beat them into shape′ If the Victorian reporter is often figured as Asmodeus the strange compound metaphor here casts the Victorian editor as Vulcan
The Narrative′s nine subdivisional headings †'Parliament and Politics′ 'Law and Crime′ 'Accident and Disaster′ 'Social Sanitary and Municipal Progress′ 'Obituaries Colonies and Dependencies′ 'Foreign Events′ 'Commercial Record′ 'Stocks and Shares′ and 'Emigration Figures′ †clearly signalled a continuation of the special interest shown by Household Words in all these topics presented in a more regimented heavily factual and statistical format To the extent that it provided the kind of corroborative detail and data on which the parent magazine based its arguments and reform campaigns the Narrative acted as a guarantor of the integrity of opinion in Household Words″ Courtesy Dickens Journals Online

This set contains the entire publication run from January 1850 to December 1855

The books are one of several of our Dickens-related listings all originally from a private estate library All are uniformly bound in fancy threeâ€quarter crimson leather with deep red marbled paper for endpapers and over the balance of the boards Gilt all around The materials used for the bindings date the binding to around 1890 and the bookplate of Julius Franke 1868â€1936 is present on the front pastedown Franke was a prominent New York City architect whose work included designing the Wurlitzer Building and it seems likely that he commissioned the bindings
This volumes shows only slight shelfwear The bindings and text block are sound The pages are age toned but clean The ink name "Baker" is at the top of a flyleaf in each volume but there are no other marks or damage.
