4to. Contemporary full mottled calf, gilt and decorated spine with pasted title label, sprinkled edges. With woodcut vignette on title, wood head- and endpieces, woodcut initials. (2 blank, 6), 72, (2 blank) pp. First edition of a very rare Latin poem comprising the rules of tournaments and carrousels. The technical terms of hunting and riding are explained in the margins. Jacques Savary (Caen 1607-1670), actually called Jacques Timent, published several Latin poems on different kinds of hunting, being advised by the famous bishop Daniel Huet, who was also born in Caen. Savary also made Latin translations of the work of famous French writers such as Ariostle and Pibrac. He was very well-known in 17th-century Normandy, then one of the chief sporting provinces of France. <U>Provenance</U>Our copy has some very interesting provenances. It first appeared in the libray of <B>Guillaume de Lamoignon</B>, with 'Pour Monseigneur Le Premier President' in contemporary handwriting on first flyleaf, the pasted ex-libris of the <I>Bibliotheca Lamoniana</I> on the front pastedown and its round stamp with an 'L' in the upper right corner of page 3. Guillaume de Lamoignon (1617 -1677) was a French jurist. He is known for work which he did towards preparing the codification of French laws. He became in 1644 master of requests in the Parlement. He took an active part in the Fronde of the Parlement against Mazarin. He became first president of the Parlement in 1658. A distinguished member of the Society of the Holy Sacrament, he was greatly devoted to the Catholic cause.Later, the work was part of the collection of <B>Pierre Theodore Noel du Payrat</B>, with his pasted ex-libris with 'C.T. Noel du Payrat'on the front pastedown. Pierre Theodore Noel du Payrat (1761-1832) was the chatelain of the Perigordian estate of Razat. A noted jurist and Counsellor to the King, Payrat would later become a member of the Conseil des Cinq-Cents (The Council of Five Hundred), one of the revolutionary legislative assemblies established by the Constitution of 1795. Carefully preserved by his descendants, Payrat's collection survived intact until its dispersal at auction in 2002. Noel de Peyrat's descendants still maintain the Chateau de Razat. Fine copy.
