12mo. Contemp. vellum. With woodcut printer's device, a view of the stock exchange, on title, and some fine woodcut vignettes in text. (20), 226, (14) pp. First Dutch translation of the popular "Demonologie" by Francois Perreaud, or Perrault (1572-1657), son of a protestant pastor, and himself a minister in the French Bourgogne and Gex region. First published at Geneva in 1653, the book describes in detail all vexations and nuisance caused by devils and sorcerers, especially by the so-called "Tormentor" of Macon, to the household of the author and to all inhabitants of the town of Macon. The Dutch translator Gillis van Breen (1584-1662), was minister of the Church, first at Hasselt and Jisp, and finally at Beverwijk, from 1610 until his retirement in 1655. He also translated the "Church History of the Waldenzen" by Petrus Gillis. The present Dutch translation was already extremely rare in the 18th century. This issue is subtitled "Junge Deutsche Buchkunstler" (Young German Book illustrators). Profusely illustrated. Text in German. Essays by Bockwitz (editor), E.H.Lehmann, Werner Spohr, Hans Praesent, and F.Otto Reinhard. This periodical is devoted to the study of book arts, such as typography, different types of printing techniques, new kinds of paper, etc. And so each issue has numerous tipped-in examples of woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and the like taken from books that are just being published, to show the range of book arts and what's new in book design. This issue is about young less well-known German book illustrators. There are numerous original woodcuts (one after Franz Masereel), and many other illustrations in both color and black & white. This is a very good softcover copy with some wear to the covers, a little chip out of the front cover leading edge. Two small fragments of the paper spine (top & bottom) missing, but the binding is still tight. Inside generally very clean. 12.5" high X 9" wide, about 125 pages.

This exhaustive study traces the interaction of artists, mainly painters and sculptors in the creation of sets and costumes in the 20th century. Almost all the artists are European and well known. 256 plates, many of them in color. 37 page "Catalogue of the Productions" give lengthy summaries of all the details of productions discussed in the text. A classic work and basic reference. Oblong folio, 12" high X 13" wide, 306 pages.

This is not of course a complete record of their holdings, just a sampling, prepared to accompany an exhibition at the British Museum in 1914. There were 215 works in the exhibition.
