Laguna Beach Circa 1910 1910. Original Artwork . Single Sheet. Near Fine. 19 1/2" x 9. Large Beautiful Watercolor By Griffith Probably A Laguna Beach Or Catalina Island Locale. Born In Springfield Ohio Conway Griffith1863-1924 Is Known For Landscape And Some Marine Painting. He Was Raised In A Cultured Family And Both He And His Brother Armand Harrold Conway Became Recognized Artists. At Age 17 Conway Went To New York City And Became A Student Of William Merritt Chase And Wayne Gifford And Then For Several Years He Taught A Special Method Of China Painting On The Faculty At The Cincinnati School Of Design. However Problems With His Health Took Him West In The 1890S. In Denver Where He Lived On A Cattle Ranch He Studied Landscape Painting And Also Made Trips To Mexico And California In 1898 Moving To Southern California Permanently In 1904. He First Lived On Catalina Island Later Moving To Laguna Beach Where He Was A Member Of The Laguna Beach Art Association. Exhibition At The Steckel Gallery In 1912. Australia Circa 1945 1945. Original Artwork . Framed with Archival Glass. Very Good. 36" x 30" x 3 3/4. Image 22 1/2" x 17" mounted on board with wood border around the image with three strands of prison fence wire on original electrical mountings raised horizontally in front of the image. Original red tag with Japanese inscription from the concentration camp in which Wainwright was held. Original art by General Wainwright signed in pencil as "Wainwright" at lower right. A striking half-length portrait of Wainwright emphasizing his emaciation and debilitation with scenes of the concentration camp torture etc. in background. Unrestored with some wear and lacking one electrical connector of six but carefully preserved in a deep glass-fronted frame of old wood prepared by a conservator with no restoration of the image or wire. A fine depiction of the horrors of his experience stark complex and with Modernist sensibilities. Almost certainly done in Australia soon after his release perhaps during his recuperation in Australia. Wainwright retired to palm Springs; this art is from a Palm Springs estate but provenance unknown. <br/> <br/> unknown

Philadelphia All According To The Yellow Label Mounted On The Very Worn Black Backing. An Attractive Portrait Apparently Of Geirge Orwel Circa 1932L Leaning On His Left Hand And Staring Somewhat Belligerently But Resignedly At Viewer Left Hand Has Not Been Finished. This Appears To Be A Portrait Of A Younger Orwell Than Usually Seen Circa Early 1930'S An Intense Young Man With A Small Mustache Eyebrows Thinner And Higher Than Usually Seen But With His Distinctive Right Ear Present. The Portrait Is Not Clearly Orwell In The 1920'S Or 1940'S But Compares Favorably With The Few Early 1930'S Photographs Of Him That We Have Seen. Unmarked As To Subject Not Clearly Identified As Orwell. Provenance Murky; From A California Estate Circa 1998 With Much Other Art And Intellectual Literature. <br/> <br/> CIrca 1930 / 1935 unknown
