Woodcut illustation of a well on title, engraved coat of arms of the dedicatee Johan Maurits of Nassau on p. 3, woodcut initials. 119, (1) pp. <B>Ad 1: </B>First Lamsvelt edition and the 7th edition out of nine in total, with the engraved title dated Amsterdam, Willem Lamsvelt, 1698 and 74 half-page engraved emblems in text. With the last leaf containing a stock-list of books which were available at Willem Lamsvelt. Landwehr, <I>Emblem books</I>, mentions that for this edition nine new plates were cut. (on pp. 48, 64, 66, 68, 92, 94, 96, 98 and 140), while in <I>Emblem and Fable Books</I> he states that only the emblems on p. 64 & 140 are new.<B>Ad 2:</B> Second edition with the famous half-page engraved emblems by Marcus Gheeraert's etchings for Edewaerd De Dene's <I>De Waarachtighe fabulen der dieren </I>(Bruges, Pieter de Clerck, 1567). Marcus Gheeraerts had cut 107 plates for the <I>Waarachtige fabulen</I>. These 107 plates, together with 18 new ones by Philippus Galle (nrs. 1-3, 11, 14, 18-19, 21-22, 24, 47, 50, 52, 54, 98, 101, 110 & 114), are used by Philippe Galle in Antwerp for his <I>Esbatement moral des animaux</I> in 1578. These 125 plates are re-used by Dirck Pietersz. for the first edition of Vondel's <I>Warande der dieren</I> in 1617. In the preliminaries an exerpt of van Mander's <I>Schilder-boeck </I>on Marcus Gheeraerts.<B>Ad 3: </B>Second edition, being a re-print of the first edition printed in Amsterdam by Dirck Pietersz. Pers in 1620, with engravings (some signed) by Johan Sadeler after Crispijn van den Broeck. In this work Vondel described 38 characters from the Old Testament and Apocrifical Books. The incorporated <I>Heerlyckheyd van Salomon </I>has a seperate half-title but continuous pagination. It is Voldel's translation ofthe work by Gyuillaume de Saluste, 'Heere van Bartas, Phenix der Fransche Poeten'.<B>Ad 4: </B>First edition, with above the dedication the engraved coat of arms of Johan Maurits of Nassau. (24), 381 pp. First edition of the commentary and notes by Martin Antoine Delrio (1551-1608) on ten tragedies by Seneca together with an edition of these texts. In his commentary, knwon for its modern approach, Delrio cites not only a great number of ancient greek and Latin authors but also many contemporary humanists, citing from the works of poets, scientists, jurists etc., like Petrarch, Lodovico Dolce, Ortelius, Justius Lipsius etc. Delrio also includes autobiographical comments and a list of sources, ancient and modern. The Flemish theologian and Jesuit scholar Delrio is known for his influential work on witchcraft and magic: <I>Disquisitionum magicarum libri sex</I> (Louvain, 1599).
