LORRAINE JULES.:

BOULANGER MARCHE. LONDON, FRANCIS BROS & DAY 1877-81.

With an excellent colour portrait by H.C. Maguire of the notable French General George Boulanger(1837-91) . The composer Jules Lorraine is fairly obscure although he also undertook an number of children's pieces for the Wilcocks publishing House.. Boulanger had a period when he was very popular with the French public. He was made a brigadier-general in 1880 and in 1882 was appointed director of infantry at the war office, enabling him to make a name as a military reformer. It was as war minister that Boulanger gained public popularity. He introduced reforms for the benefit of soldiers and appealed to the French desire for revenge against Germany, for the defeat in the Franco Prussian war.His star continued to rise through the late 1880's and in 1888 he resigned his seat but a Boulangist movement was the talk of Paris and the General for President a real possibility.Within a year however his star waned and rumours of a coup encourage the Government to charge him with treason. He fled to England and then in 1891 committed suicide. We can date this between 1877 when Francis Bros & Day started and 1881 when Harry Hunter was persuaded to join them both in the Mohawks and in the publishing business. Folio size with music. Condition VG

MEMOIRES MILITAIRES ET POLITIQUES DU GENERAL LLOYD. SERVANT D'INTRODUCTION A' L'HISTOIRE DE LA GUERRE EN ALLEMAGNE EN 1756, ENTRE LE ROI DE PRUSSE ET L'IMPERATRICE REINE AVEC SES ALLIES. TRADUITS ET AUGMENTES DE NOTES ET D'UN PRECIS SUR LA VIE.... A PARIS, CHEZ MAGIMEL, AN IX - 1801.

In-8 (208x128mm), pp. (1), XLVIII, 354, legatura ottocentesca m. pelle titolo e filetti in oro al dorso. Piatti e sguardie marmorizzate. Tagli a spruzzo azzurri. Brunet, III, 1133. Graesse, IV, 240. Michaud jeune in Michaud, Biogr.
