PLANEET-BOEK, HET NATUURKUNDIG ASTROLOGISCH VOORZEGGEND-. ONDERWYZENDE HOE MEN OP ZEER GOEDE GRONDEN, UIT DEN TYD DER GEBOORTE, HET UUR VAN DEN DAG, DE INVLOED VAN DE VASTE STERREN EN PLANEETEN; VAN DE HOOFD-GEAEARTHEID, EN BYZONDERE NEIGINGEN DER MENSCHEN, ALSMEDE VAN DE GELUKKEN EN ONGELUKKEN DIE HEM STAAN TE ONTMOETEN, KAN OORDEELEN, EN WAT HEN TE DOEN STAAT OM DIE ONHEILEN TE ONTGAAN, EN OM ZEER GELUKKIG TE LEEVEN. NEVENS HET WYSGERIG ORAKEL, GEVENDE ZEER NUTTIGE EN VERMAKELYKE ANTWOORDEN; RUSTENDE OP DE DOOP-NAMEN; TOT OPLOSSING VAN EENIGE LEERZAME VRAGEN. AMST., BERNARDUS MOURIK, (CA. 1740).
Sm. 8vo. Orig. wrappers, uncut. With small astrological woodcut vignette on title, title printed in red and black, and 3 full-page engraved plates of the astrological spheres, the signs of the zodiac and the allegorical figures of the planets, by C. Philips the Younger. XXIV, 360 pp. Although the title "Book of the Planet" is about the same as the 'Het groot planeet-boek. Met de geomanci, physiognomi ende chyromanci. Alles uit Platone, Ptolomeo, Hali, Albimaser, ende Johannes van Koningsberger......''. (Amsterdam, S. en W. Koene, 1800) which is a popular astrological manual, the present book is quite different, on the one hand pretending to be more scientific, and on the other hand being less "serious". So on the one hand the book presents a basic instruction on astronomy, including full lists of the stars, dates, constellations etc., while people then are also seriously instructed about how to cast their own horoscope and foretell their future, but on the other hand the book presents a complete "Oracle game", for people's amusement. "Oracle games" or "Wheels of Fortune" were a very beloved pastime on the long winter evenings within the family circle or at larger parties. For this game long lists of dates and stars were used corresponding with long lists of numbered questions and answers. Here the years run from 1679 to 1800, the first date needed for the date of people's birth and the second for the date the question was asked, so the book remained valid until 1800. Good copy of a rare popular book.- (Sl. loose in spine). De Vries 536; not in Waller, Muller, etc.

And here these pages all have the name of a zodiac sign, a classical mythological god or oracle, Latin names of virtues, etc., providing extra possibilities for amusement. Good copy.- (First lvs. worn and torn, with some loss of text in the first introductionary text-leaf; dog-eared). Cf. Waller 1403 (Amst. ed. by G. van der Linden, with a different sub-title).
