Sir John Dalrymple 1726-1810 was a Scottish advocate judge chemist and author. He is best known for this work first published in 1771. He was educated at Edinburgh and Cambridge universities and admitted to the Faculty of Advocates Scottish Bar in 1748. The research for this book came about at the instance of the historian and philosopher David Hume who had requested Dalrymple to carry out research in the French state achives. Dalrymple made a number of significant dicoveries including confirming that the Secret Treaty of Dover did contain a provision that Charles II would convert to Roman Catholicism and that the Whig martyr Algernon Sidney had accepted money from Louis XIV in 1678 and that William Russell Lord Russell had negotiated with the French monarch. Although Hume later scoffed at Dalrymple's discoveries they were approved of by Samuel Johnson and later historians. Maurice Ashley commented that the publication of the Memoirs was 'a striking change in the historiography of the revolution' and J. P. Kenyon has said that the 'careful and accurate transcripts he published . of key documents have been a boon to other historians right down to the present day.'. W. Strachan and T. Cadell unknown

1734réf. 000477On offer is an original German manuscript loan agreement dated March 26 1734 recording a debt owed to David von Büdesheim identified in the document as a Schutzjude protected Jew. Executed at Fremersheim Germany the agreement documents a loan of 21 Reichsthaler made by Büdesheim to Christoph Schröder and his wife who pledged four portions of land as security. Written in ink on a thick paper folio bifolium the document occupies all four pages. The first page records the agreement between the Schröders and David von Büdesheim; the second sets out the conditions and terms of repayment; and the third contains the court's confirmation witness attestations and a requirement that the debt be repaid by 1735. The final page bears several Hebrew notations apparently added by or on behalf of the lender. The paper also displays a large watermark. An unusual surviving primary document illustrating Jewish moneylending and Christian–Jewish financial relations in early eighteenth-century Germany. Particularly noteworthy are Büdesheim's identification as a Schutzjude the land pledged as collateral the formal involvement of the local court and the Hebrew annotations preserved on the final page. The document bears cancellation cuts through its centre apparently made after the obligation had been discharged; no text has been lost. Expected folds scattered spotting and age-related darkening are present. Otherwise the manuscript remains in good or better condition.

Henry Maundrell was the Levant Company's chaplain of Aleppo from 1696 to 1701. This work contains the first description of Balbec by an Englishman. Blackmer 1095. Cox i p.119. Tobler 116d17. Travelogues written by Europeans visiting Palestine after that period point to a shift in Europe's relationship to the region. Where medieval pilgrims had often wept or gone into trances upon their arrival in Jerusalem modern European visitors observed with curiosity what was before their eyes. They were traveling for pleasure and for cultural experiences; tourism was gradually replacing pilgrimage as a motive for visiting Palestine. By the end of the seventeenth century quite a few European tourists had already been to Jerusalem. The most famous among them was Henry Maundrell the author of the book A Journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem in 1697. The book would prove to be one of the most popular books about the East for centuries to come. By 1749 seven editions in different European languages had appeared and sections of the book continued to appear in collections of travel writings published both in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries.2 The lure of printed books in Europe and its American colonies might partially account for the initial popularity of A Journey but it can not explain why the book remained popular for the more than two centuries after its original appearance. The latter could be explained by the fact that the book is the narrative of a tourist rather than that of a pilgrim unlike the many other Palestine travel narratives that appeared before it. ; English Language; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; Jewish Studies Bible Biblica Travel Israel PalestineKabbalah Judaica Jewish Studies Hebrew Talmud Rashi .
