Former Owner's Signature Dated 1894 Erased In Volume 1 Of George Ernest Morrison And A Few Marginalia Which Appear To Be His; George Ernest "G. E." Morrison 1862 - 1920 Also Known As Morrison Of Peking Or Chinese Morrison Was An Australian Adventurer Appointed In February 1897 As The Times Correspondent In Peking Despite His Lack Of Knowledge In The Chinese Language. He Traveled To Vladivostok And Reported To The Times That Russian Engineers Were Making Preliminary Surveys From Kirin Towards Port Arthur Then Sent A Telegram To Say That Russia Had Presented A Five-Day Ultimatum To China Demanding The Right To Construct A Railway To Port Arthur. This Was A Triumph For The Times And Its Correspondent But He Had Also Shown Prophetic Insight In Another Phrase Of His Dispatch When He Stated That "The Importance Of Japan In Relation To The Future Of Manchuria Cannot Be Disregarded". After A Visit To Siam And England Then To Australia 1899-1900 He Returned To Peking. When The Boxer Uprising Broke Out And During The Siege Of The Legations From June To August Morrison As An Acting-Lieutenant Showed Great Courage Always Ready To Volunteer For Every Service Of Danger. After A Siege Of 55 Days The Legations Were Relieved By A Multinational Force Which Then Ransacked Much Of The Palaces In Peking With Morrison Taking Part In The Looting. There Was Great Uncertainty Regarding The Future Of China In The Following Months And Through The Times Morrison Managed To Depict A Skewed Picture Before The British Public. While Russia And Japan United In Opposing Any Dismemberment Of China The Country Was Nevertheless Punished By The Imposition Of A Heavy Indemnity. In 1904 Morrison Became A Correspondent With The Japanese Army. He Was Present At The Entry Of The Japanese Into Port Arthur Early In 1905 And Represented The Times At The Usa Peace Conference. In 1907 He Crossed China From Peking To The French Border Of Tonkin And In 1910 Rode From Honan Across Asia To Russian Turkestan. From Andijan He Took A Train To St Petersburg And Then Traveled To London Arriving On 29 July 1910. A Great Chinese Physician Dr. Wu Lien-Teh Succeeded In Staying The Spread Of This Mortal Sickness Which Seemed To Threaten The Whole World. Morrison Published A Series Of Articles Advocating The Launching Of A Modern Scientific Public Health Service In China. When The Chinese Revolution Began In 1911 Morrison Took The Side Of The Revolutionaries. In August Morrison Resigned His Position On The Times To Become Political Adviser To The Chinese Government And Immediately Went To London To Assist In Floating A Chinese Loan Of £10 Million. In China During The Following Years He Had An Anxious Time Advising And Endeavoring To Deal With The Political Intrigues That Were Continually Going On. He Visited Australia Again In December 1917 And Returned To Peking In February 1918. He Represented China During The Peace Discussions At Versailles In 1919 But His Health Began To Give Way And He Retired To England Well Aware That He Had Only A Short Time To Live. He Died On 30 May 1920 . A Nice Historical Association. Later Ownership Signatures Of G B Wilson. G. Nicol hardcover

1795réf. List3024Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1795. Two pages measuring 10 x 16 ¼ inches. Toned folded with tears at folds and marginal damage; excellent. A contract dated December 11th 1795 between Philadelphia merchant John Godfried Wachsmuth and Secretary of the Treasury Oliver Wolcott Jr. in which Wachsmuth agrees to ship $113000 worth of coffee sugar and cocoa to Amsterdam for which the US government would advance Wachsmuth the funds. The items would be consigned to an Amsterdam banking house the bankers would pay the proceeds to the United States and the US would in turn pay Wachsmuth in specie. At the time the US was finally recovering from the precarious financial situation that followed the Revolutionary War and had successfully negotiated trade deals with Great Britain and Spain. Despite political upheaval in the Netherlands the country had been and remained a significant trading partner for and investor in the US. This contract specifies that the goods will be consigned to Wilhelm and Jan Willink Nicolaas and Jacob Van Staphorst and Nicholas Hubbard; this group in particular invested heavily in the US making large loans to the government and purchases of land via the Holland Land Company including investing in the Louisiana Purchase. A deal of this sort had a number of benefits for the new country; most importantly it would continue to build a positive trade relationship with the Netherlands and improve the US’s credit abroad and it would bring more specie into the US which was experiencing a specie drain due to its imports exceeding its exports.1 It involved significant risk for Wachsmuth—he would be responsible for ensuring the bankers ultimately received the value of the goods in specie—but the potential reward in terms of both profits and a relationship with Amsterdam’s most important bankers seem to have been worth it. Of interest to scholars researching the economic growth of the early United States especially in terms of foreign trade relations. 1 Nicholas A. Curott and Tyler A. 1793réf. 003158Dublin: P. Byrne Grafton-Street 1793. Book. Very Good Minus. Full Calf. First Edition. First Edition full calf red label with gilt titles to spine. Calf rubbed front and rear boards moderate foxing throughout page block. prior owners names front endpages and title page front hinge just starting to separate. Contents are unmarked. One of the prior owners whose name is handwritten 3 times is "Alfred Balch Nashville". Balch was a close personal friend and neighboring plantation owner to President Andrew Jackson. He was a practicing lawyer in Nashville and eventually became head of the Nashville Bar Association. During Andrew Jackson's presidency Balch was appointed to the role of Commissioner of Indian Treaties. During this time he would be active in trying to resolve issues the Creek and Seminole tribes had with the United States government and may have helped resolve the Second Seminole War. Later in 1840 during the presidency of Martin Van Buren Jackson would pressure his former vice president to appoint Balch to the role of United States District Judge for the Middle District of Florida where he would serve as a Florida District Judge for only one year. In 1835 letters appear between Alfred Balch and Andrew Jackson suggesting a level of comfort that only friends would have with one another. In one letter Jackson seems to write angrily about a secret conspiracy to undermine his chosen successor Martin Van Buren. What evidence there is seems to suggest a very close relationship between Andrew Jackson and Alfred Balch.Balchepedia; the Encyclopedia of Balch History. A great association to Presidential and Tennessee history !. P. Byrne, Grafton-Street Hardcover
1796réf. 001121Rome: Presso I Lazzarini 1796. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. xii 502 pp. Full and rich history of Ariccia and surrounding towns on the outskirts of Rome to the Southeast of the City by Castel Gandolfo the Papal Summer Residence. Ariccia is one of the most ancient cities in Italy dating to at least the ninth century B.C. This history concentrates mostly on the seventeenth and eighteenth century when it was ruled by the powerful Savelli Chigi family which produced one pope Alexander VII and built a grand residence in the town that has been used many a time as a movie set such as in Visconti's "Il Gattopardo" "The Leopard". While it is over two millenia since the town yielded to Rome's preeminence as a city Ariccia continued to be the next most important city in Lazio for long stretches of history owing to its propitious location on the Via Appia the first way station on the road between Rome and Naples and its pleasant salubrious climate in contrast to malalial Rome made it a favored resort for the powerful of Rome in prior centuries. This copy of the history a model of municipal histories in its day is very good. There is some light and occasional foxing yet little that could be considered disconcerting. The exception would be the four places where a prior owner presses leaves which left a residue and in one instance may have created a tiny wormhole type of hole. However the small amount of loss has no effect on readability where it occurred. The vellum has an attractive mottled almost tiger striped design. Book is tight. Occasional light pencil notes a word or two in each case affecting a handful of pages. Still a very good copy. Presso I Lazzarini hardcover
