Essi vivono in un perenne stato di contraddizione: il teatro, che si consuma nel suo farsi e si rinnova ad ogni rappresentazione, nella fotografia sembra rinnegare la sua profonda natura transitoria; la fotografia, quando si affaccia nello spazio del teatro, tradisce la sua vocazione alla realtà, e si contamina con la finzione. Eppure, al di là di questa apparente inconciliabilità, o forse proprio grazie ad essa, il teatro e la fotografia hanno stretto, nel corso della storia, un rapporto denso, problematico ma estremamente ricco di stimoli e di applicazioni, dalla fotografia teatrale in senso stretto alle diverse forme di "messa in scena" e di "performance", che ne fanno oggi un terreno di ricerca particolarmente efficace, nonché uno dei nodi principali per lo studio della fotografia e delle sue pratiche artistiche e sociali. Questo volume raccoglie i contributi della giornata di studi svoltasi a San Miniato il 21 ottobre 2006, in occasione degli incontri sulla fotografia di spettacolo Occhi di Scena e rappresenta un primo significativo tentativo di avviare un confronto tra studiosi di diverse discipline al fine di stabilire un terreno comune di riflessione e ricerca.

It derives from a local king Antiochos I and is of great interest in itself and for the study of ancient religion and art. The material consists of a large body of monumental sculpture statues and reliefs and voluminous inscriptions about the king and his gods. The monuments are unique in their quantity and in being precisely dated and identified. Together the texts and images provide an unrivalled opportunity for getting close to the quality and texture of an ancient cult. Antiochos I of Commagene c. 69-36 BC belonged at the tail-end of Hellenistic monarchy and the beginning of Roman rule in Syria and Eastern Anatolia.</p><p>The scholarly text by R.R.R. Smith describes the geography and political history of Antiochos' kingdom and looks at the archaeology of his sanctuaries and his royal cult as known from inscriptions. Exquisite photography by Ahmet Ertug concentrates on some of the best preserved sculpture from two sites Nemrud DaÄŸ and Arsameia and expresses in a new way the distinctive character and impact of these extraordinary monuments.</p><p>Roman mosaics from Zeugma on the Euphrates are also included in the book. The large picture mosaics discovered in the Zeugma houses during the rescue excavations of the 1990s are sensational.
